Cant believe I missed this thread. Probably my favourite band.

Top 5.....

There is a light that never goes out.
Shoplifters of the World
What difference does it make?
Hand in Glove
Panic

To be honest, there are about 20 that could easily go in my top 5.

The Headmaster Ritual
Paint a Vulgar Picture
Bigmouth
Cemetery Gates
Stop Me If You Think....etc

Gaffs is right, a top 5 is just silly, mine would change after a week and then change again after another. Vicar in a tutu, Rusholme Ruffians, What difference does it make, hand in glove, there is a light, Ask, Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me, How soon is now, I started something I couldn't finish, The boy with the thorn in his side...I could go on for days

I once heard There Is A Light That Never Goes Out playing in a motorway service station. Someone obviously had a dark sense of humour.

Pretty much changes depending on the mood I am in.

Another question. Best Smiths lyric?
"Keates and Yeats are on your side, while Wilde is on mine"

Got to rank up there...but as Brewlio said, much like the songs themselves, there are too many outstanding lyrics to whittle away a small list of them.

I have no idea either, yet.
I had a really bad dream, it lasted 20 years, 7 months, and 27 days.

I never celebrated my birthday but when I was 20 years, 7 months, and 27 days old I went to the pub to drink to it. In my defence I was only 20 years, 7 months, and 27 days old.

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die

these lyrics with that guitar was amazing ....

I'm leaving this thread again.

It was dark as I drove the point home, and on cold leather seats well it suddenly struck me, I just might die with a smile on my face after all.

I've always felt it was Marr who was the real talent.
Got to disagree there, Morrissey and Marr is one of the classic song writing partnerships.

Marr was very important, absolutely, but for me The Smiths genius is in large part due to Morrissey's lyrics and vocal delivery.

Both essensial parts to The Smiths success and continued popularity.

But Morrissys lyrics and delivery were what made the group what it was.

I love "Punctured bicycle, On a hillside desolate". So random, yet it paints just a vivid picture.

I love all the lyrics in Ask - especially "Spending warm Summer days indoors, Writing frightening verse, To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg"

There are just too many to mention.

If you must write prose and poems
The words you use should be your own
Don't plagiarise or take "on loan"
There's always someone, somewhere
With a big nose, who knows
And who trips you up and laughs
When you fall
Only just picked up on this thread. I was at school in the early/mid 80s when The Smiths were in their heyday and I must admit, it wasn't until the tail end of their time that I actually got into them a bit (Sheila Take A Bow was the song).

A few years later, though, I got back into them mostly as a result of enjoying some of Morrissey's solo stuff.

They are definitely a "Manchester band" - a lot of the lyrics are very specific to Manchester and places in Manchester but they'd long since split up by the time the Mondays and the Roses and the whole Madchester thing was in full swing. It's probably fair to say, however, that The Smiths were something of an influence and an inspiration to some of those bands from that period.

I can still listen to The Smiths these days but I find that I just can't empathise with those depths of misery and feelings of unrequited love any more.

(It's one thing to be 16, listening to I Know It's Over after you've just split up with your girlfriend but it's a bit sad when you're in your late thirties!)

That the meaning behind some of the songs The Smiths sung gets lost as you get older (or at least they have in my case) is a sad part of getting older and "growing up", really.

Perhaps there's still one line from Morrissey that sums it up though...

The passing of time and all of its sickening crimes is making me sad again.

I think my opinion comes as listening to Morrisey's solo stuff at a much younger age and finding it to be absolutely terrible. So when I came across The Smiths it was Marr who really caught me.

The most impassionate song to a lonely soul is so easily outgrown. Lyrically that song is one of their very best

Rubber Ring has been my favourite Smiths song for years and years.

It deserves all the lyrics

A sad fact widely known
The most impassionate song
To a lonely soul
Is so easily outgrown
But don't forget the songs
That made you smile
And the songs that made you cry
When you lay in awe
On the bedroom floor
And said : "Oh, oh, smother me Mother..."
No...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring
La...

The passing of time
And all of its crimes
Is making me sad again
The passing of time
And all of its sickening crimes
Is making me sad again
But don't forget the songs
That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
Yes, you're older now
And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood by you

The passing of time leaves empty lives
Waiting to be filled (the passing...)
The passing of time
Leaves empty lives
Waiting to be filled
I'm here with the cause
I'm holding the torch
In the corner of your room
Can you hear me?
And when you're dancing and laughing
And finally living
Hear my voice in your head
And think of me kindly
No ...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring
La...
No...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring

Do you
Love me like you used to?
Oh...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring
La...

You're clever
Everybody's clever nowadays
You're clever
Everybody's clever nowadays

You are sleeping
You do not want to believe
You are sleeping
You do not want to believe
You are sleeping
You do not want to believe
You are sleeping

GREAT BAND. Lacked a certain warmth to be one of my absolute favourites though. Mainly because of Morrissey; great lyricist, great front-man, but I struggle to bond with his personality on record.

Headmaster Ritual might be my favourite. Or Barbarism Begins at Home. Or Suffer Little Children. feck. They were a great band.

My favourite Smiths song by far. Every single nuance is wonderful.

One of my favourite bands of all time, seen them a lot from the Hacienda to the Summer Fest at the G-Mex.

Been to loads of gigs since and nothing compares to the sheer excitement and bedlam of a Smiths gig.

Best tunes in no particular order are

  • Headmaster Ritual
  • This night has opened my eyes
  • Jeane
  • There is a light that never goes out

Will always have a special place and time for me.

Correct mate B side with wonderful woman, another fecking top tune may I had.

feck me what a band, goosebumps.

'Well I Wonder' must be their most under-rated song. Marr, I believe, has referred to this as the best song he's written, and interestingly, they never played this live as they felt they couldn't do the original justice.

Headmaster Ritual and Barbarism Begins At Home are certainly two of my favourites, but one and two are reserved for This Charming Man and What Difference Does It Make for me. Johnny Marr really is one of my favourite guitarists.

I've never understood the smiths, I think they are pretty good but joy division were always the superior manc band IMO
I believe there is room in the world for both. Joy Division have certainly written some of the most beautiful music ever created. If I had to chose it would be The Smiths, but I'd rather not have to. :)
