Debt in America is an insane topic altogether. It’s mind boggling to me, how much debt the average person has.Typical murica. Debt = good.
Another nice way to keep people in check.

I think it partially stems from a feeling of hopelessness. If you’re poor and have no perspective, why care about the future? Just live in the moment and have some fun at least.Financial literacy in America is horrible. I live in a very red and fairly low income area (Somerset County, Maryland) and the amount of people driving $60,000 pickup trucks coming out of trailer parks or other low income housing is staggering. Then seeing story about how people are getting new credit cards and maxing them out so they could take a trip to a Disney park or see Taylor Swift in concert is just bonkers. That's all self inflicted debt before medical bills hit.
100%I think it partially stems from a feeling of hopelessness. If you’re poor and have no perspective, why care about the future? Just live in the moment and have some fun at least.
There’s of course other factors at play and a lack of education is among them.
They also live with constant propaganda that tells them, that they desperately need status symbols to portray themselves as wealthy and strong. Cars being a great example. The whole country owns cars they don’t need. But if you buy a small and efficient car, you become the target of all sorts of jokes. It’s a broken country in that regard.
Americans will rather get broke, having everyone believe they are wealthy, than live within their means.
Yeah. It happens in other countries too but US is among the top because even medical and education needs are very espensive. It's actually quite sad. Personally I can't imagine being in debt right when I graduate from college and have to face a shitty job market requiring 5 years exp for a junior role on top of AI becoming mainstream by the day. When they have money or financial strength to purchase instant gratification of course most are gonna do it. Tomorrow is screwed anyway especially with Trump the buffoon in charge.I think it partially stems from a feeling of hopelessness. If you’re poor and have no perspective, why care about the future? Yes, it keeps the economy breathing until the debt becomes just too much to service. I continue to say if Democrats want this Trump monstrosity to crash faster, all they need to do is pay their bills and stop spending. It is hanging by a thread and will fall apart anyway at some point soon. Might as well be now. Kill consumer spending, and let the recession begin. Unfortunately, it will take a lot of other economies out too, but a global rethink is in order here.100%
We live in a consumer culture.
A panel of federal judges on Thursday blocked President Trump from imposing a 10 percent tariff on most U.S. imports, dealing yet another legal setback to the White House in its efforts to tax foreign goods and wage trade war without the express permission of Congress.
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/07/business/economy/trump-global-tariff-ruled-illegal.htmlIn a split ruling, the Court of International Trade found that Mr. Trump had wrongly invoked a decades-old trade law when he applied those duties in February, almost immediately after his last set of punishing tariffs was struck down by the Supreme Court.
As if the Democrats are going all-in on any of this. There is no viable left and the wokeness is also rather overstated. And it’s all the woke left‘s fault.

Agreed, and I will add that even here in rural, red, NC there are a bunch of electric/hybrid cars. Lots of trucks, but the number of SUV's is surprisingly low. Most of this post, except the bold, is decently accurate. But millions don't own cars that live in cities with good public transit, not just New York and Chicago but even in SF Bay Area, where BART is great for some routes.
Outside of cities with good public transit, cars are unfortunately needed, especially now that most companies are, even more unfortunately, moving away from remote work. And the second part, only really occurs in red rural areas. No one in cities like Los Angeles makes actual jokes about hybrids or small, efficient cars. In fact, in any city where parking is an issue, its far more common to hear the "compensating for a small d**k" reference to big truck owners.
Are they mostly Teslas?Agreed, and I will add that even here in rural, red, NC there are a bunch of electric/hybrid cars. Lots of trucks, but the number of SUV's is surprisingly low.
Mostly Teslas on the electric side of things (some IONIQ's). Way more hybrids though and those are pretty diverse but the RAV4 is probably the most common. Are they mostly Teslas?

The Iran war is likely to take center stage in the summit between President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping, leaving less scope to resolve issues like tariffs and rare earth supplies. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already said Iran will be a topic in the meetings, which are due to take place May 14 and 15.

China welcomes U.S. business expansion and hopes the companies can keep advancing bilateral economic relations, the foreign ministry told CNBC. China’s commerce ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment.
The flights are notable not only for their proximity to the coast, which puts them well within range of gathering intelligence, but for the suddenness of their appearance – prior to February, such publicly visible flights were exceedingly rare in this area – and for their timing.

The mind of the American Christian Conservative is fascinating. Their Christianity has become just a veneer. They brand themselves as Christians without taking the inherent morals or values to heart in any way. Imagine if these people actually were devout Christians and lived up to the ideals.
