Trump threatens tariffs on 60 countries including UK and Canada over ‘forced labour’
Donald Trump has threatened tariffs of between 10% and 12.5% on 60 countries including the UK, EU and Australia over alleged forced labour failures, in the latest attempt to revive his signature trade policy.The EU immediately hit back, saying it expected the US to respect the tariff deal it entered into last July and arguing stealth tariffs breached the spirit of that agreement.
The proposed levies on partners accused of allowing imports of goods produced by workers under coercion come after the supreme court ruled in February that the president’s “liberation day” tariffs were illegal.
Trump responded by imposing 10% across-the-board tariffs, but last month the US trade court found those were also unlawful, although they remain in place during the appeal process.
The latest proposal for tariffs on the grounds of forced labour, which would affect major partners including Canada, Japan, Norway, Taiwan and China, would enable Trump to skirt these previous court-imposed limits on his protectionist agenda. They come as the US threatens to impose fresh levies of 25% on Brazil.
The US trade representative, Jamieson Greer, said: “The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced labor is unacceptable. This creates a dynamic where American workers are forced to compete globally on an unlevel playing field. We will no longer tolerate this disparity.”

At what point do we hold the US as a state responsible? Trump is the crazy president but at a point the apparatus and checks and balance fails. The US as a nation allows and agree to whatever he's doing right now.

It's already happening. Other countries are decoupling from the US in general. I guess most obvious is the bunch of military aircraft deals that just fell through (Canada and Spain buying jets from Sweden and Turkey instead of the F-35, Italy buying A330MRTT instead of Boeing tankers...), but there are loads of other economical, political and technical decisions made around the world that move away from the US.
Which is different to Trump's first term. Then he was similarly unhinged but the apparatus around him kept him in check and almost everything went on as it normally did. This time the checks and balances are not working as well and the people showed they don't understand the issue by electing him again.
Plus Turkey is buying the EF Typhoon from the UK.

He decided he wants the Reflecting Pool in Washington DC lined in blue so it looks like the blue on the US flag, but because his brain's fried he called it Reflecting Lake instead and claimed that it is larger than the tallest building in the world. Obviously he immediatly got ridiculed for his idiocy, and because Trump is Trump he can't let that go. Hence somebody had to make that graphic for him. None of those are anywhere near the size of the tallest building in the world, of course, but Trump's of course not letting truth get in the way of his boasting.

Aside from Trump bragging about it 24/7, there's a bigger issue that seems to be overlooked this far. When he first started talking about this project, he claimed to have two contractor friends who put Olympic sizes pools in one or two of his hotels. Of course, claimed to know more about building pools than anyone else, but the main boast was that these contractors would sort the clean & repair out for peanuts.
As usual Trump claimed it would be far cheaper than anyone else could do it and he even used Obama spending $34 million to repair & clean it back in 2012. Trump said it would cost $1.8 million.
However, when asked recently he claimed the contractors were unknown to him and won by submitting a bid and the new cost would be around $15 million dollars. Trump has also contracted out repairs and cleaning of many other statues and fountains in the D.C. area and again, the costs are vastly more than he claimed they would be in. This has left many wondering if Trump himself was profiting from the contracts in some way given they have gone to unknown contractors for prices way over his initial estimations.
Of course we should hold the US responsible as a country. This is their government, and it's been heading this way for a long time. The Republicans (and especially their Evangelical base) are evil Machiavellians and all that, but Democrats are complicit in the sense that they have long abandoned the lower classes and haven't offered much of anything to them in a long time.
This isn't just a couple of people electing Trump out of nowhere. And it isn't a genie that will just get back into its bottle after Trump.
Are we going to have to go back to world wars to find a president (of any country) who can match the amount of harm this prick will have caused to the world over the course of his presidency?

The bigger problem is why the centre and the left get held to a higher standard than the right. And why successes of the centre and left are never recognised by the electorate who knee jerk react and then pivot back to the right (whose governance previously already made most people worse off).
Consider the damage done by Brexit (Farage) and the Conservatives (reelected repeatedly) to how the electorate now blames Labour for not fixing everything caused by those two clusterf###s. Their first response? to pivot to Reform who are basically the worst of the last decade put together.

Overall, lower-class household wealth going up is a good thing, as is supporting that pension plan. The big green-energy act was also a net benefit for poorer communities, which were benefitting most from those investments. And I agree that that should have been clearer to the electorate.
However: overall economy increases often don't mean much to the lower classes, and neither do typical white-collar middle-class concerns (which they are, even if they shouldn't be) like LGBT rights, renewable energy, or overall economic growth (which often doesn't translate to all income groups). And I was specifically talking about the lower classes deliberately, cause they benefit most from leftist economic policy, which isn't the same as leftist social/moral policy. To expand further on that point, I'll quote two more posts:

I know, the situation is more complex in the US, because things like the strange electoral system and how it's being exploited through things like intentional polarization and gerrymandering complicate the landscape. But overall, I would really argue that the supposed left should start speaking directly to and working directly for lower-class concerns before we all start complaining how the lower classes don't care enough about progress about white-collar middle-class concerns and vote against their best interests. (Again, I know those should be everyone's concerns. For example, the dismantling of US climate and environmental protections will hurt the lower classes first. For example, it's them who are getting noxious data centres on their doorstep first. Example of Boxtown, TN: article 1, article 2.)
The Democrats suck at messaging, while the Republicans and their entire media apparatus are in campaign mode whether it’s an election year or not. They are relentless.
It can’t be overstated how much goodwill and credibility the Democrats lost by rolling out a corpse and then gaslighting people that were doubtful about his ability to do the job. Biden showing some humility and stepping aside in time might have been the difference, but he was too arrogant.
