Another test for Ole
Didnt we pass that last season?
Saying that, our Irish class at school got the same test 4 times in a row and only 3 people passed it on the 4th try so maybe there is merit to this

PL table made up of all games since Bruno arrived. United are certainly consistently getting points after he arrived. 4 points behind with having less games. Could easily be on top. Liverpool had obviously already sealed the trophy in march, but there still is concistency at show here.

Home and away form takes the piss for completely opposite reasons. We've been such a weird team this year, but I'm optimistic that we're on the right path.

However I fully expect us to stink the place out more frequently than we should expect for Man Utd, until we make the necessary moves in the transfer market. And that's a whole different story.

Cheers for the stats.

2020 is a good year, many (not all) things considered. Not trophies nor competitions wise though, have to be said. We're out of CL again for god sake. Football is also arguably back to fun and best since Bruno join in. If you're saying progress compare to last year then definitely, since last year and the year before that are just trash. We stoop that low so the only way is up, easy "progress". The heights of 2016 and 2017 with trophies at that are way better progress.

2016 - fun football since Rashord joining in are great, couple that with Zlatan, Pogba, Mkhi and others season after. Won a trophy (FA Cup). Damage done last year, no CL.
2017 - trophies (League cup and Europa League), back to CL and a solid year all-around. Football is fun early years, but just effective later on, remained in CL.
2018 - shit
2019 - shit
2020 - great ever since Bruno joining in, everything is awesome! Football is great and fun, but zero trophies. Zero! And out of freaking CL. Progress?

Overall Year 2017 and 2016 are definitely the better years, showing greater progression with comparable football, but winning actual trophies and remained in competitions.

Why select year as comparison though? just curious. Because using seasons as comparison will show poor stats to support Ole? Yeah I get this season is only half way through so far unfinished. Curious what are the actual stats of last two seasons. Ole took a half of season 18/19.
If you claim our football in 2016 was entertaining, we will never see eye to eye on that.

Apart from that, I agree it makes little sense to talk about progress without saying progress from what, and progress with what. Resultswise, since 2013, we are now level with the peak of Mourinho. Since Solskjær took over, we have steadily improved. Trophywise, Van Gaal is still ahead, while resultswise he was way behind. Since Solskjær took over, I’ll argue we are ow closer to what it takes to win the CL based on our performances in games against European opponents then and now. Then again, with a lucky draw and lucky penalty in 2017/18 we came further in the CL than we did now, going out of the ‘group of death’. In 2017 we won the EL while reached the semi this year. Playing wise, when we won, we barely scraped past opponents like Anderlecht, a young Ajax and a very weak Celta, whereas now we crushed similar teams by four and five goals, while dominating the chances against a Sevilla That was better than anything we met back then. So how do we evalute progress?

To evaluate progress under Solskjær it makes sense to evealuate from the state of the club when he took over. In terms of atmosphere at the club and squad, we are improved. In terms of squad potential (age, mentality and talent) we are improved. In terms of entertainment, it’s subjective, but to me we clearly have improved a lot. In terms of goals scored, we are improved. In terms of points averages, exemting the honeymoon period, we are improved. In terms of squad depth, we are improved. In terms of playing on the front foot or against established defense, we are improved. In terms of youth department integration, we are improved. In terms of aquiring the right kind of players, I think we are improved. In terms of it feeling like Manchester United - a very subjective dimension, and one that was severely threatened for me under Mourinho - we are immensely improved in my experience of it at any rate.

I see a lot of progress in that. Wether it will continue and eventually lead to better league results and trophies than Mourinho, and if so wether it will continue further, is for the fortune tellers to tell and for me to disbelieve ;)

I remember people calling me mad because I felt we could be a dark horse for the CL this year. I honestly think we're going to cause teams lots of problems, the Tottenham game was a bad day at the office, we're generally a hard team to play against for the big clubs. Pace, technique, grit and we do have a good defense when everyones fit. Going to be a fun ride this year.
Way to go and jinx us.

The regularity with which we score 3 or more is very satisfying.

I think I read that from moyes to mourinho we scored 5 twice. (leverkusen and mjityland) Under ole it's happened 7 times.

Correct - in the league none of our managers did after Ferguson

In Fergusons last 3 seasons - we only 8 times scored 5 goals or more - 8 against Arsenal, 7 against Blackburn, and 5 against Birmingham, Wigan, Wolves, Fulham, Bolton and WBA

Under Louis van Gaal we scored:
4 goals: twice
3 goals: 16 times

Mourinho
4 goals: 8 times
3 goals: 11 times

Solskjaer
6 goals : once
5 goals: twice
4 goals; 5 times
3 goals: 16 times

And 5 goals against Tranmere, Leipzig, Club B and Lask Linz in cups

Be careful with TWTD, their tables are not always accurate. We played 14 games last season with Bruno (you might recall seeing the 9-5-0 record, that was floating around), and have played 13 this season. That's 27 games. Below is an accurate table, I didn't do home and away, sorry.

Point still stands, though. United since Bruno is one of the two best teams in England. Thanks for correcting. I did not find a better source than TWTD.

I did a fairly maligned thread here a while back where I was trying to show our consistency under Ole by breaking down his tenure so far into chunks.

Because I'm a bit of a sad bastard (and Ole in) I've kept up tracking it over the course of this season and maintain that 1. we are seeing progress 2. judging him based on his overall win rate (which is actually decent now, but at the time was being used to criticise his performance) is misleading due to the catastrophic run of results from games 20-40

Win rate under Ole:
  • 1st 20 games - 75%
  • Games 20-40 - 20%!!!
  • Games 40-60 - 55%
  • Games 60-80 - 65%
  • Games 80-100 - 60%
  • Games 100-112 - 58%
So overall we've been fairly consistent under Ole, bar that horrible run just after he became permanent, which spilled over into the start of the following season.

Very impressive. Thing is, that dip from 20-40 is exactly what I'd expect given the situation created by Ole's change in playing style in comparison to Jose's and the squad at hand. Once that got worked out, things have stabilized.

Well this completes 2020. Promising season pushing us in the right direction. Scored the highest amount of goals too almost beating our best win percentage. Brunos had a huge impact in this team, been a fun year to be a United fan. Need to step up another gear in 2021 though.

Yeah progress is right. Our form has been amazing. City have 2 games in hand and a few days ago proved why they are favourites for the league. I don’t think we will win it but it’s nice to be involved and be there with a chance at this part of the season especially since at the start of the season I thought Liverpool/city are too strong. We our the underdogs but we are right there

Will be a hell of a fight for C.L places with both Everton and Leicester looking capable of fighting for it. Us, Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Spurs, Everton and Leicester - some decent sides will miss out

And btw - this year we have 36 points from 17 matches. Last season we had 35 points from 25 matches. Now THAT is progress
