Like I said, if thats the case then that was a stupid deal that didnt pay off either.
That´s Daily Star quoting The Sun, which seems to be the source for half the rumours coming out these days (Boateng snubbing Utd, as the latest). A pile of crap, if you ask me. And it makes no sense. Why would Woodward go against Ole´s wishes for a pretty average player like Alderweireld (a 30 yeas old, rated 6,8 at Whoscored, with tackling and aerial duels as his main weaknesses..)? Not much of an upgrade from what United already have.
Did you see him play against us last season? Looked a definite upgrade on what we had out there.
He had a good game that day. But on average its only his offensive play that was much better than our CBs
The Muppet in me is thinking De Ligt and Toby in, Jones and Rojo out. Have Lindelof and De Ligt starters with Toby 3rd, Axel coming in for cup / Europa games, learning from the above three, and Smalling as general back-up.
Toby covers a few years to be replaced by Axel, suddenly our CB situation looks much healthier.
That would be great. Unlikely to happen though.
Would love to get him and Meunier for 50m combined. That would be great business whatever way you look at it.
Sorry folks. This one isn't happening. Off to City/PSG/Barca.
Why aren't we in for this guy?
Tons of experience, calm under pressure, technical passer from the back.
We need a CB & the other options are rubbish.
Alderweireld for £25m, then reassess next year, is the most sensible option out of the lot.
I'm sure he remains an option, but it's time to move away from the retirement home recruitment strategy
Isn't it about making the best decision you can make at the time?
Decent defenders are being valued at £80m+.
I don't believe that Maguire is a top level defender so, isn't a short-term option the most sensible decision?
He's good enough to play at the top 2 teams in the PL right now. The best 2 teams in Europe most likely.
His best years are ahead of him. There are prob 3-4 what you would call top level CBs across Europe I imagine.
Prices are not doing to go down and we as a club have shown nothing to suggest we are improving at bringing
in young talents who make it. All adds up to buying him now.
He is a complete no brainer for that price, yes I know he is 30 but would still give us some experience and leadership.
Personally I cannot see Ole going for him though as he seems obsessed with young british talent.
Who's to say we're not in for him. Is there any reason Alderweireld would want to come here right now apart from money? Tottenham are in the CL and have been so consistently for a good few years. He's also 30 now, would he want to spend 1 of the last few years at his prime in the Europe League with no guarantee of CL football the season after? If he did choose to leave he'd probably have better options on the table than us anyway.
I'm up for this transfer but too many alarm bells. If a player is willing to leave a champions League team to one that has Europa then most likely he's coming for the cash. We know how that story panned out a few times recently.
Get ready for Mi Amigo Alderweirald.
A) he wants to see out his contract and return to Ajax. He’s already stated this
B) he’s not the player he was
When you consider that the weak-links in their teams Stones & Matip play for them maybe, but I doubt they would spend £80m+ on him.
I also don't think the top clubs around Europe would be big admirers too. Mainly because he struggles when put under pressure. That's my biggest concern with Maguire.
I agree that our coaching has been poor, prices will keep rising & we urgently need to bring someone in, but i have my doubts about Maguire.
I agree that all we have to offer currently is money, but i get the impression that's what he's after? He's unhappy that he's been on low wages relative to his quality and he wants 200k which Spurs have refused so far.
True, maybe we've already been knocked back & he has better offers from other clubs. That could be why.
I thought he was after one last big contract?
Isn't that the root of his troubles with Spurs? That he's been earning low wages relative to his quality & wants a wage befitting of his importance to them? He's been on £80k which is nothing compared to his quality.
He may not be the player he was, but he's still head & shoulders above our defenders.
We can’t just keep buying kids and hoping they’ll call all come together. There’s a lack of experience and maturity in the squad right now. The players that were purported to be the next generation to lead this side (Jones, Smalling, Young etc.) simply aren’t up to it. We need to buy in established players with experience to help these prospects mature, and TA is the type of player we should for target for that affect.
At 25m he is a steal and can provide at least 3 good season since he is not heavily reliant on his pace
I don't believe CL should be a huge factor with the younger guys but someone like Toby aged 30 then there's not much ambition to join us other than money and a chance to win Europa.
Still better than Maguire. For a third of the price.
Don’t think your first point was confirmed as legit news either. He merely said he would like to finish his career at Ajax. So it doesn’t mean it will be his next move.
I'm not sure he's better than Maguire tbh. When Van Dijk was at Southampton, you'd be forgiven for thinking Gary Cahill or John Stones were better due to playing for a bigger club. But playing at a bigger club, doesn't always guarantee one player is better than another. In terms of having a nononsense warrior to clear up threats from crosses and set pieces, then Maguire is superior. This is an area we have been very weak in. In terms of pace, it's possible Alderweireld has lost an inch of pace due to age by now.
Being English, it's more likely Maguire would become one of the boys in the dressing room, compared to a foreign player who might see joining as nothing more than a day job, without mixing too much with the others already there.
Strongly disagree with this.
We had Fellaini here 'clearing up threats in the air' for years and we were still terrible at football. Which top sides regularly attack through the air?
Who cares if he can head a breeze-block if he can easily get beaten by pace & quick movements?
Fellaini was unbelievable at protecting us from set pieces, but the reason we gave so many crosses and set pieces to the opposition, was because we had no midfielders who could hold onto possession and control the tempo. Smalling gets bullied frequently by burly opposition forwards.
Maguire is a very mentally tough, composed defender who does not panic under pressure like all our other defenders always do. He lacks a little pace but is brilliant in every other area.
He wants to return to Ajax at some point, not necessarily next summer.
He is. Spurs long since have offered to double his wages, but it seems this is not enough for him.
Time to step into the digital age.
What did we win with warrior Young.
I agree that we gave up many crosses because of our lack of control but i was just pointing to Maguire winning all the headers doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.
I'm not sure about Maguire not panicking under pressure. He doesn't get the same level of scrutiny our defenders get so his errors are minimised.
If he was under £50m then maybe but i'm really not convinced by him.
Do you think Spurs should cave in and offer him the extra wages he demands or will you be happy going into next season with Sanchez & Vertonghen?
The problem is "the boys in the dressing room" some of them English like Lingard .
No one has any issue with English players if they are good enough to bring UTD back to the top at home and in Europe . The problem is only maybe one or two English players like Kane or Stirling are at that level and they are not moving .
Maguire just strikes me as that correct type of character you'd want in your dressing room. A fearless Steve Bruce type that won't be afraid to have a go at any spice boys, if the likes of Lingard aren't busting a gut, yet is turning up covered in bling and fancy labels. I think a lot of the players in the dressing room would look up to Maguire.
I don’t see Maguire as that type of character at all. And again, it doesn’t matter if he isn’t good enough. And he most definitely isn’t.
No, because this would cause further knock-on wage demands across the squad. And also this would detract from our ability to offer substantial wages to any potential new players, like Ndombele for example. Toby wants to be paid as much as Kane, but he won't get that from Spurs.
By next season do you mean the season after the one that starts in August? Because otherwise, if Toby leaves this summer, then I'm sure we'd be looking to sign another CB, if only for further backup (in addition to Foyth) to Sanchez and Vertonghen - but yes, I'd be OK with Sanchez and Verts as the regular starters.
Fair enough. When you look at it from your pov, it doesn't really make sense to cave in to his demands, when you can use his wages towards recruiting someone like Ndombele anyway whilst preserving the harmony of the team. Something we know all too well with the Alexis debacle.
Yes i meant this upcoming season. With Vertonghen, Sanchez & a promising defender in Foyth, you won't be that worse off anyway in all likelihood.
"Most loyal team to the great servants" award.
£25M for Alderweireld or pay a world record £90M for Maguire?
