Need a thread for Sekou Kone who may rival Toby for a midfield birth - Ornstein reporting that THE planned loan has been shelved and he is seen as one to stay with the first team squad

I hope both Get minutes

Has never impressed me, and didn’t today.

Odd one. So far he played around 20 games for first team (including friendly games) and i literally can't remember a single good or bad play by him. He is just...... there.

We should be shifting him on this summer. He works hard but there’s not a lot else. He’d be pure PSR profit.

Have only seen a few minutes of the game but surprised to see him in the mix still. I have yet to see a top level cm in Toby.

I would like to see him as a purely defensive midfield player, the one closing the spaces, winning the ball back, covering the back four (five) when they are caught out of position. We don't have anyone of that ilk in the team as far as I can see.
When our wingbacks are pushing up, we seem to have a lot of space in the area behind them, Collyer, I believe, could possibly be that type of player. He hasn't got a tremendous passing range at the moment, but that could come with more experience.

Sell him hes shite

I don’t know who would buy him, a Championship team maybe? I’ve been waiting and waiting to see what he’s about, but the more you wait and still don’t see anything, you realise that maybe there just is nothing to his game.

He’s found his way into the team at a tricky time because he’s an able body who could get about a little bit, but I haven’t seen anything whatsoever from him on the ball. I can’t recall a single nice bit of play from him - but maybe I’m just not taking enough notice.

I don’t like to be harsh on our youth players but I’m genuinely shocked at how little responsibility he takes on the pitch. As a midfielder he needs to assert himself, and he better start doing it quickly if he wants to make it here. When you look at even Fred for example, he’d give the ball away but he’d still have the confidence to want to get on the ball and keep trying. You simply can’t just fade into the background as a Manchester United player.

It is like our promotion system works in a way; "Lets promote to first team the most average player".
I think that Greenwood is the last promoted player who had pure football talent. All others are basically hard working players without being stand outs in any area.

Look at where are all promoted players in last 4 or 5 years. Mostly in lower leagues or squad players in bottom PL sides at best. Same will happen with Amass, Fredericson and Collyer.

I suspect he’s just being fattened up for the slaughter. If we get the timing right, we could get £20m-odd maybe. But the difference in talent between him, Mainoo and Koné looks clear as day.

Timing is now. That is how City and Liverpool earned shit load of money on their youngsters. They didn't allow world to see their youngsters on biggest stage.

My opinion as it always was - does some decent things tracking back with midfield runners, can win the ball a bit and has some pace. All of these are decent things... That you would want on a technically sound fairly talented player. And I dont see that with Collyer. The basics arent there for these extras to be worthwhile.

Those youngsters were making big names for themselves in the youth ranks though. I wouldn't say Collyer is in the same bracket.

Hung out to dry playing in the 10 position today. He was probably the closest to a literal stop gap as you'll ever get for Mbeumo's arrival, so the others could play their expected positions and get used to them.

20m for Toby Collyer. A 21yo who has shown nothing thus far. I certainly hope you are right but i think 2m is closer to reality.

Maybe after promoting Ravel Morrison, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Jessie Lingard, Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood and Alejandro Garnacho, they’ve felt the need for switching things around? Scott McT getting MVP in Serie A couldn’t have helped either.

2m is now. That’s why I said timing is key. If he gets a run in the team at some point this season (and the team is doing well, crucially) - then next summer he will be seen as an opportunity. A player who can’t quite break i to a top team because they have Bruno or whoever ahead of him.

Right now, he’s a fringe player in a poor team. He’d struggle to get PL attention. His youth reputation isn’t that special either.

The main reason City get more money for their kids is because they have been an exceptional team. The 4th choice at the best team in Europe is seen as an opportunity for low PL clubs. It is very easy to get good money for fringe players if you are the best team.

Secondly, the players in question are simply better than the ones we want rid of. They have bigger reputations, generally speaking. Their players attract interest from PL and big Euro clubs. All of ours go on loan to League One and Two, unless they are any good then they go straight into our squad. When was the last time a PL team wanted to loan one of our kids? Even a Championship team is quite rare.

It's a little difficult to judge him on a single half in the first pre-season game where he was started in Mbeumos no.10 position and then moved to RWB halfway through, to swap with Amad. He doesn't have the skillset for either of those positions.

It's good experience to play all the positions but he's a 6, or maybe an 8 at a stretch and has much to learn. Perhaps a loan might be the best thing.

For the remainder of his time with us he’s gonna live off that gesture by ETH after our FA cup win vs. City.

Never impressed with his on the ball play, which you’d expect to see from a highly rated youngster at this level. His best work seems to be as a runner. Someone to chase down opponents and get a foot in. That’s not good enough for a club like ours.

Its also the type of players they are selling. They sell Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Delap, maybe they sell McAtee - these are technically proficient players with potential who just need experience. The talent is already there.

Mind you they dont always get a lot even then. Morgan Rogers got them £1.04 million

Yeah have to agree with most in this thread and I've never really seen it with him. He puts in a decent shift but we can do so much better.

I'd prefer if one of the Fletchers or Kone gets his minutes this season.

Players like Palmer and Delap had been leading men for a successful England U21 side at a major tournament. Our players are generally not featuring at such level. If we had one, he wouldn’t even be a fringe player here, he’d be firmly in the team. The likes of Ethan Wheatley is not scoring goals in the Championship. They are all getting loans below the Championship. McAtee did a season at one of the best Championship clubs in Sheffield United as a key man as they got promoted.

I feel for him a bit. Firstly he was injured at crucial stages of his development. His style of play is to keep it simple and moving so it rarely catches the eye. Playing with multiple midfield parters in an unsettled team and in roles that won’t highlight his better attributes.

This could of course be applied to all players, but for youngsters it’s going to be even more difficult. His not at the level where he is consistent enough to start him over other players in the squad but I think he has something. Similar to Gore he needs games to show his worth.

Definition of a fringe player?

I'll see myself out.

Good loan for him, hopefully does well and we can get a couple of million for him next summer

He is a solid rotation option, sometimes it's just what you need when the other players are slow as feck.

Hope he does well at Championship and gains the much needed playing experience.

Jonny Evans doing his old team a favour?

Collyer’s competition at West Brom will be Alex Mowatt, Ousmane Diakite and Jayson Molumby in the centre midfield position (they do have Callum Styles and Isaac Price, but Styles has been playing left back and Price is more likely to play #10).

He should get plenty of minutes there.

Good loan for him. Also think this indicates we are definitely trying to get a midfielder in.
I hope we are as I think Toby is probably our most physical and defensively sound midfielder.
I am sure he will do well at West Brom.

Maybe I'm overrating him a bit, but I thought he'd be a really solid option to keep around for the season.

Maybe I'm overrating him a bit, but I thought he'd be a really solid option to keep around for the season.

He needs major work on the ball and he's not going to be picked much for the first team other than cup matches. A loan could be the making of him, against weaker opposition weekly he'll be able to gradually improve without as much pressure. Its our best way of simulating what most players get, starting off at a weaker club in a weaker league and having the time to develop into a better player before taking on the challenge of playing for Utd.

So best of luck to him, at worst I hope he does well on loan and if we arent sure about him when he comes back secures a good permanent move.

He appears to have all the physical attributes to be a decent midfielder, but he lacks experience and it shows when he actually has to do something with the ball.

A year on loan is a great idea and would’ve been an ideal scenario last year.

He’ll learn plenty playing competitive football with grown men in a tough league.

I was expecting us to sort this after we signed a midfielder

we must be confident of getting at least one in
