Getting competitive minutes on loan in the Championship would do great for him - hopefully he can kick on after loitering around under EtH, and we can perhaps get a decent fee for him next summer.

I just don't see why we keep a player like Collyer. He turns 22 in january - playing for a club that has a completely dysfunctional midfield. If Amorim really believed in him, he would have played for us regularly. If he hasn't succeeded so far - why should he do it next year when we probably have 2 new midfielders in place.

If he was 18 or 19 yes - fine. But we could probably raise a bit of money selling Collyer as he seems to attract attention - and we need the money now

Agree he most likely really doesn’t have a long term future here. But I think if we sold now we’d probably be scraping a few million. If he can get a half decent, 30+ appearances for West Brom this season we can look at selling him the next summer for hopefully low double figures in the millions.

This is what I believe also.

I care more about youth players more than new signings from other clubs but not every youth player is going to make it. Collyer might have a few good halves for us but I don't think he has ever had an exceptional 20 minutes. Maybe he did but I don't remember any.

Surely we could have got 5 million for the lad?

If he has a decent loan we will get some money next year. Right now we would get next to nothing

Players mature at different speeds. People writing him off at 22 are very premature.

If you haven’t made it at United by the time you’re 22 chances are you’re not going to be a regular for the club. He should have been loaned out a lot earlier in his development, then we can start to shift players at similar fees to Chelsea, Liverpool and City.

I think we should first extend his contract then look to loan him out over a couple of seasons, first loan being in the Championship and monitor his development with a view towards a PL loan. We can make or save more money if we invest time in him because giving him a 40k/wk contract won't break us , financially, but it can give us more time to build him up to becoming a 30m player or if it goes well save us having to buy a squad player for 30-40m. His ceiling is basically where Ugarte is and we need to see to it that we help him reach that level.

Early in the season but I imagine that we were hoping he would have played more. 62 minutes across 5 sub appearances so far, nearly half of those came in last night's game though so maybe he's getting closer to a start.

Loan hasn't been a resounding success so far.

3 minutes
3 minutes
11 minutes
17 minutes
28 minutes

At least he's getting more minutes game by game, but he's been left on the bench again tonight.

Came on in the 89th minute this evening. WBA were leading 1-0 at that time but Leicester scored in the 93rd minute to take a draw. He looked fairly lively and had a chance to make it 2-0 but put his effort wide of the post from an angle. Shame to see him getting so little game time.

Quite the failure then. No real ability, and only got minutes for us due to something something Manchester United youth player. Shame for him.

He needs another loan with a view to a sale in the summer

Surely a better option at Ugarte and our most mobile option currently.

Was he not highly rated at Brighton for his passing?

He was rated as a young player and at a lower level/age group. I imagine it was a combination at that age of passing and already showing his superior size and physicality to the other kids

Thought he showed some promise last season.

Often loans don’t work out.

Aside from his current injury, hasn’t he been injury prone whilst there?

Let’s not give up on Toby just yet. By the time he recovers from his injury we’ll have a handful of matches left in the season to see what he’s got.

His doubters may be proven right, but they may be proven wrong.

Was baffled by the loan as he looked pretty good in his appearances with us. Hopefully we see more of him soon.

Agreed I thought we should have kept him in the squad this season, he has more stamina, pace and strength than the others imo, so would have been useful as a Casemiro sub after 60-70mins.

We should sell him or loan him again in January. I will go full Moyes now and say that City model of youth promotion is the way. Big clubs like United should promote in first team only extra talented players who have future in first team or those who can get you a good fee later.
I don't know how this lad even has 20 games for us.

Hindsight is 20/20 but it was the wrong loan. WBA have strong CM options, and while it's valid to point out that if he can't displace them, Collyer is unlikely to make it at United...injuries mean he's played a LOT less football than most for his age. He needs an Amass style loan where he plays 90 minutes every week that he's fit.

It was to give him a year of unhindered development and playing time so that he could return to potentially succeed Casemiro or Ugarte. But as per usual we chose a rubbish loan destination that gave him neither. I hope once he gets fit we keep him instead of another loan. We wasted his 6 months for nothing.

Its not a given though. For example once upon a time a Gnabry couldn't displace anybody in the stoke XI. He has been at a Bayern now nigh 9 years...

He is injured afaik so not our most mobile option currently.
And even if he was fully fit it would be a surprise if he could offer us more than Ugarte. Toby looks bang average in a half decent championship team like West brom.

Amorin obviously doesn't fancy/rate him, there were numerous occasions last season to use him, especially as a sub, and he rarely ever made it on to the pitch, I'm surprised they didn't sell him last summer

Shame, are other clubs as shite at sorting out loans as us? We do seem to pick some baffling clubs to send our lads off to.

I liked the look of him last year, as a limited though useful squad player type. Let's not forget how SAF utilised these types to huge effect over his time here. Not everyone needs to be a superstar nailed on starter.

He'd offer more than Ugarte currently, I'd bet my house on that. 6 months in the squad and a better loan or sale in the summer with buyback clause seems the sensible move.

It’s more likely he was so far down the pecking order that they thought his development would benefit more from playing regularly at a Prem club than sitting on the bench all year because we only play with two midfielders.

6 appearances last season when we were concentrating on the EL, if he can't get more time on the pitch under those circumstances he's never going to break thru here

He only turned 22 yrs old, yesterday (3rd Jan).
There’s still time to see if he might develop into a useful member of our squad.
