He’s nothing special as a goalkeeper and doesn’t have any particularly outstanding attributes, plus he’s pretty old. But all that notwithstanding, assuming we are unable to sign another goalkeeper, I’d rather he was number one next season rather than either of the chuckle brothers.

I would have him as no 1 all day long. I suppose the only question is whether he has the appetite for it. He’s clearly a better keeper than the other two, but he’s chosen to be a no 3 and barely played for a number of years. Does he want it, or would he rather be in the supporting cast?

He had a good game last night, couldn't be blamed for the goal because of the deflection.

I'd like to see him in net for the early rounds of the cups.

I’d rather him than Onana or Bayinder.

I have zero confidence in the others to help organise the backline. Heaton obviously older but I’d trust him to talk to Yoro, Heaven etc through a game more than I would the chuckle brothers.

Yes, it was mentioned during the commentary on last nights game that he was communicating with the back line.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the lack of communication between keeper and back line blamed for a lot of errors last season. If so, that alone is an improvement.

Can confirm about last night. He jumped Dalot at one point for pushing up with the rest of the back line after we regained possession. Was also trying to coordinate some traps with Harry who also seemed a little disinterested.

Seemed safe and calm which transfers to those around him. Best thing u can say about a keeper really.

I'd play him over Bayinder, that's for certain. Whether his body could handle first team action every week I'm not sure.

If we don't get Donnurumma then i wouldn't mind Heaton starting every game.

He's played three competitive games since 2020. There's no chance he suddenly becomes our #1 next year

This. Clear case of a player becoming better in fans' minds the less he actually plays.

It's 2025 and we're earnestly discussing Tom Heaton's potential place as the #1 goalkeeper for Manchester United

Don’t really get how he wasn’t given a few games when Onana/Bayandir were diabolical last season. If not mistaken, Tom had an injury for a bit?

Seems to obviously well liked and respected within the squad, and seems to have a calmness to him which would be needed in defence. Haven’t seen him make any major feck ups in his outings.

Not saying he should be our number 1, still think like before summer that finding a new goalkeeper is one of the main priorities followed by striker.

Would have rather give Hojlund another year as starter than trusting Onana and Bayandir, since we do have options within the squad in striker position(not counting in our signings).

I’m by all means not blind as Hojlund and our attack was fecking shite last season, but playing Onana and Bayandir just made me so much less confident of getting results considering the absolute shower of shite of performances and inconsistencies we had.

I miss the calmness and presence we got when we signed Van Der Sar, was well needed to build the core defence back then.

I’d be quite happy to see him start tomorrow. As you say, he brings a calmness at the back which is the complete opposite to the feeling of impending calamitous doom which pervades the 6 yard box when Onana is on the pitch.

Just realized this is technically his 10th season as a first team player for us (with the caveat that he spent some of those seasons out on loan).

Testimonial when?

Genuinely if he's not bashing the managers door down demanding a chance to play at the weekend then he may as well retire.

I think apart from one pre-season game in the past where he had a mare, I've been pretty much impressed with him most of the time. I genuinely think he's a good choice for us.

The only issue is that knowing our luck, all of his experience and composure will come crashing down after an early blunder or something. However, I would still play him.

Bayindir constantly fumbling corner after corner and Onana's laughably bad poor fundamentals are draining me man.

It's painful how obvious this is yet Amorim does f*ck all about it.

He needs to play, he is far better than Onana and Bayindir and has the experience and calmness to settle the defence down. The back five looked petrified of Onana last night, and not once did I see any signs of communication from Onana to anyone.

He has to start the next game surely, he’ll probably make an error that leads to a goal as that just feels inevitable the way things are going but you can’t pick either of the other two.

If he doesn't play this weekend after the shite the other two have served up, then why is he even a playing member of staff.

He’s there as a contingency and as a training partner. He’s not really there to play. He’s pretty much retired.

I don’t think I can remember a situation where a typical 3rd choice keeper at a big club (old, and there as back so that young keepers can go on loan) actually plays because the first two are so awful and/or out of form. Injured yes, but not in this situation.

I don’t think Heaton wants to be in the nets.

Amazing how our only sold, commanding keeper is the one that can’t get any minutes

Heaton has only had 2 competitive starts in 5 years. He's 39 years old. He's pretty much half retired at this point.

Given how desperate we are with keepers, he may sadly be our best bet, but people need to keep their expectations in check.

I don't think expecting him to be at least slightly less shit than Onana & Bayindir is a tough ask to be honest

We are keeping our expectations in check. That's why we want him to start a match. Our expectations are on the floor with keepers right now. We just want someone to not be a clown.

Yes, he has started only one or two matches in 5 years but can he really be much worse than the other two at this point?
