SAF knew how to win titles in the premier league and did so with just the odd big signing, usually in the forward department. I do think that, in the coming years and decades, we are going to need to splash out Real Madrid sized transfer fees and build teams around three or four 'top 15 in the world' level players. At the moment we can only really say we've got one of those in Rooney. It's rare that successful teams are built around home grown talent alone. The class of 92, LVG's Ajax team, Tika taka Barcelona needed top managers and much time to build them. Other than that you have to spend mega money to stand any chance of success.
