Ole's transfer record is exceptional. Getting rid of the right people, excellent signings with a view to long term success, all now showing their value. Most exciting time to be a supporter and watch this amazing rebuild. Reminds me of the excitement and expectation when Fergie brought in Cantona. Believe...

You're basing your 'average rating' on posters ratings in the caf ? really ? What a ridiculous argument.

How about his whoscored rating of 7.12 ? a rating that compares to Liverpool VVD (7.40), one of the best if not the best CB in the world right now ?

Let's be objective a little bit.
I'm not basing my average rating on anything other than watching him play for us myself and I touched in why I hold that view in my original post so take your 'ridiculous argument' else where

Posting a link to his performance thread is just to counter another baseless post from someone else saying nothing other than 'I think you're wrong and I'm right' and using the pretence that its common belief HM has being absolutely amazing. Which I disagree with for actual reason that I actually gave

Yep he's been smashing it in this department.

Makes you wonder what will happen with Pogba. The rumours of him being offered a renewal, clash with the genuine desire to play for the club trend.
Not really. We all know Ole thinks the team should evolve around Pogba. Maybe the team evolves around Pogba and Bruno, etc...

Wanted to stop reading at Maguire

Definitely wanted to stop reading at more than just a defender

If you think he's change the way we play i don't know what to say.

I've seen him enough live and on the screen (at United) to make me question what the heck we spent that money on. He'll step out with the ball and then ponder on it, while there's an easy pass to a guy in space, slowly assessing the field before giving it to the guy who used to be in space but is now marked

I took for granted when we signed him that he was actually a player but I've seen bought of it overall, even his defence has been iffy (generous)

Saying that confidence (and partner) may play a part (I never watched him at hull/Leicester/england) but the amount of times I've seen him turn down an obvious, progressive, fairly low risk pass makes me wonder what all the frigging fuss was about

All being said signing wise I think we're on the right track
I think you’re way off with your Maguire comments. He’s not in the absolute top bracket but our defence has looked so much better with him in it. I don’t agree with your assessment of his contribution to the play going forward either. He overplays sometimes but he takes oppo players out of the game by running past them which helps the midfielders. Worth every penny.

I guess that's the beauty of opinions- you really dont have to pay attention to them. It's also interesting how so called "factual reasons" are actually ones opinions.

I don't disagree with that point, options currently at the club he's clearly the first cb in the lineup

Maybe what I I've said originally looks harsh on him but it's just in reaction to the praise he seems to get making it sound like he's some kinda of silky ball playing centre back God

We still have had an issue conceding from set pieces with him
He hasn't appeared to be anymore of a threat from offensive one either over others
He does dally on the ball on occasion
He has put others in tight spots by giving them the ball in a bad spot when options have run out
He has had moments were he's bumbled or hesitated on defence that have almost cost us

He's definitely getting some benefit from his previous reputation from some people.

These are hopefully things that will improve as he settles further at the club and hopefully starts playing more with a cb who compliments him

Did Kroos not say this himself?
This is absolutely why I said it was BS. Doesn't make sense, does it? The Haaland reason was more diplomatic although even my dog knows that it was for money (money in the future). The Kroos statement was pure BS.

Just be honest. Ole's ass is saved by the "panic buying" of Bruno. Before this, that "ole sacked" poll suggested otherwise.

Have to admit though, he has improved Rashford and Martial tremendously. Rashford is contending the League topscorer (before that damn injuries), which I had never expected this season. And another "panic buying" in Ighalo is looking excellent.

So he's actually pretty good on spotting attackers. If I am the money man, I'd try to get any attackers that Ole wants.

Maybe I'm confused. It seems to make sense that Kroos didn't join because another manager came in and said no I don't want that player.

Kroos has said in an interview he was set to join us and Moyes also said he had agreed to sign him in a separate interview. Then LVG came in and didnt want him. What makes me confused to where the truth is is that Shaw and Herrera were signed before LVG came in but he didn't scrap the deals.

I believe Us not signing Haaland was a mix of the agent insisting on a release clause in the contract which made us a stepping stone and the player bigger than the club and that he wanted to be automatic number one starter which we weren't guaranteeing with Rashford and Martial

Agree Bruno helped turn things around.

Spotting defenders is equally good. No doubt Mag n Wall impoves our defence. James were also good cheaper attacking addition, superb at the start.

He spent close to two world record fees on those players. It does "fix" the defence, though. So I'd say he gets mark as expected on defence. Not good, and not bad.

Yeh. James is another transfer that I'd put into "very good attacker" buy. He looks like a seasoned PL. A very good squad player, that I think even Liverpool or City would glad to have.

It’s our best sequence of signings post Fergie by some distance. From Fred onwards the signings have all helped us massively and they show the proper desire to succeed here. I’m not saying the better signings aren’t down to ole wanting them but I do feel the club probably decided in the middle of the end of José when everyone was falling out and he was lobbying for older players and clashing with talented youngsters that our recruitment was failing because they were blindly backing managers targets for years and the squad was broken and without any long term plan. They decided to go with the scouts and analysis more and more instead of going put getting who suits the specific managers system. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that we were already scouting and signing decent players such as shaw and Herrera before Moyes came in. Thiago and kroos were also decently close to coming in. They are top players who all had scope to improve here and look mentally strong. Ole/Utd style signings. There have also been quotes from youth scouts saying the club wasn’t interested in the likes of de ligt or de jong a few years back but we also look a lot more proactive in the youth markets in the last few years regardless of who the manager is.the club looks like it has some kind of plan or else they’ve finally struck it lucky with the mix of players.

The signings thus far have all been superb. Each of them has added to the squad and starting XI and replaced players no longer up to the task. There is still work to be done but as long as we follow our recent trend then we will be in good shape moving forward. I like that we are looking at the character of the player and not just their name. We appear to be targeting players who are leaders on the pitch, don't shy away from the ball and show the required hunger and desire for the shirt. My only criticism is that we didn't get Bruno in for the start of the season, though I feel that was more to do with Woody more so than Ole.

Harry Maguire. World record fee paid. Nice.

to be fair the defenders all covered each other well there and Maguire has been really good the last 10 games. He’s been a good singing and a surprisingly good choice as captain even in the short space of time he’s been here. He’ll be better next year too.

Young was fine as a squad player, a great fit. He was always an attacking winger, should have been a full back as desperate cover only. It’s insanity that he was ever converted in to a permanent LB. It’s like having Carrick cover at CB once then deciding to make him a permanent CB for the next six seasons, then complaining when he’s not Paolo Maldini. The whole thing with Young was always so bizarre to me. He should have been a reserve option in attack, not a permanent LWB for god knows how many years.
He was made an auxiliary fullback precisely because he was shit in attack.

He had a decent first season even though very patchy (50% of his goals/assists came in 2 games, Arsenal at home and Spurs away). By the end of his 2nd season half the Caf were screaming for him to feck off even though we won the league. His sole good game that season was City away. Moyes tried to make him work the next season because he could cross on a good day but that went nowhere, then LvG started him at wingback and the rest is history.

Ashley Young was never good enough for United.

I will use expectation vs reality to assess his signings:

Maguire
Expect - 8.5 (80m, world most expensive defender, although most of us think we’ve overpaid for him and he is not really worldclass level)
Reality - 7.5 (decent, best CB in our club, but nowhere near the best in the world. I expect he would do better in distribution, he is not bad, but just not as good as I’ve been told)

AWB
Expect - 7.5 (50m, expect him to be decent)
Reality - 8.5 (didn’t expect he is that good in defending. He is probably top 2 or 3 right back in the league right now)

James
Expect - 5.5 (15m, didn’t expect him to feature much. Only expect him to be sub)
Reality - 7 (he become regular first team player. Poor decision making but always a great threat in counter. 15m is a bargain)

Bruno
Expect - 8 (55m, he got great stats, but there’s always some doubt as he is from Portugal league and there’s not much interest from other clubs for him)
Reality - 9 (totally transform our team, we play better football with him, arguably our best signing in years)

Oghalo
Expect - 5 (loan from China)
Reality - 7 (Near zero expectation of him to be honest, didn’t expect him to make such impact and score goals here. Surprised everyone)

Maguire could've been much better if he has a compliment partner. Baily or Tuanzebe look set on paper, but instead they are made of paper.

I'm happy with our last 5 signings (including Ighalo). It is easily the best business we've done since the great man retired.

I didn't think Maguire would be with the fee, but really i don't care about the money now. Our defense is looking good, and it's record is clear.

Maguire will still get better too, as will AWB, Bruno and Dan James.

Now we need this summer to go well too. (i say summer, the feck knows when it will actually be)

Maguire - Good, but fee way too high
AWB - Great. Worth the fee
James - Good start, average overall. Fee might be a bit high
Bruno - Very early. But he's had as much impact as 1 player could as a Jan signing. So looks a great deal so far

Never too late to use your common sense instead of spinning yarns and making ludicrous assumptions just to put someone down a notch. Also it seems difference of opinions are no longer allowed on this forum and sometimes even without knowing the actual opinion!!!

P .S. This is not worth dragging anyway. So my intention was to indicate that in no way Maguire is a record fee defender. And it's not just about that clueless lunge. He has been average to good at best. Has had numerous shaky moments, luck and I cannot recall one game since August where he has been imperious. Or should we not even expect one super-boss game from our record signing?

I;ve been as impressed with the outgoings just as much as the incomings.

Only negative i can find is there havent been as many incomings as we need.

Lets be clear, Ole inherited a dis-jointed, unmotivated squad full of bad personalities and 5 managers worth of players, coupled by immense fan expectation to immediately succeed. Ole is trying to transition a squad that hasnt had any good transfer strategy for at least 5 seasons.

Consistency has been our biggest issue, but integrating youth players and re-shaping a poor squad is always going to take time.

Look at the squad then and now, we are so much better after clearing out some players and adding some motivated players. Its an exciting time, we're definitely improving and there's lots to be excited about.

We have goal scorers in Rashford/Martial/Greenwood. Bruno has been a revelation. James will get better, Ighalo offers us something else.

1 more window and we may never see Jones & Lingard in a Utd shirt again! How good is that!

Still lots of work to do:
Outgoings still needed:
Smalling
Sanchez
Rojo
Jones
Lingard
Periera
Pogba

We need replacements for Mata & Matic with the next season.

Summer 2020 i'd be looking at another 4 signings to come in and be a part of the squad, as well as Greenwood being more involved.

He's yet to make a bad signing and he's also improved players and integrated youngsters. Ole's doing good

Not really, Bruno is just one player. We cannot win with just one player creating, we need a bit more when the other teams are going to try to shut Bruno down. Hence Pogba.

Transfer fees are rarely a good indicator of the quality of the new player. Leicester was in a good position to stand firm on their valuation. £130m for Coutinho didn`t make him a goat level talent over night.
Harry has played to pretty much the same level he has previously for Leicester and England.

I remember fergie saying he signed both Ashley young and Valencia based on their strong desire to join United.

Well it wasn't for anything else if we are honest.
Did he really say that? They were at Aston Villa and Wigan, literally any player at those clubs would have had a "strong desire to join United" at that time
