I feel you are strongly over estimating Murtough’s power. Final sign off will always comes from Arnold and the Glazers, Murtough has no authority or budget.
He has authority over the targets. Glazers do not pick the players they only control the budget (which for transfers has been large)

Wasn't there a big thing when Mourinho wanted to get rid of Martial that one of the Glazers intervened?

I doubt they're as hands off as you're suggesting.

Would be a great option but he isn't your traditional winger. Very good player though.

If Pogba is leaving, then 2 defensive oriented midfield and Bruno + 2 flair players will be the way to move forward.

No Jose wanted rid but others from the recruitment department did not. In fact this is one of the reasons Murtough was appointed to his current role.

In that case we are doomed if he identified Ronaldo to come here. Surely they wouldn’t have been scouting Ronaldo at 36 and thought ‘he’s just what we need’. It doesn’t even make sense with the cultural reboot going for young hungry players. Therefor, he is obviously influenced by marketing value which is extremely concerning. I don’t expect to see any changes if a Ralf is reporting to him.

The Ronaldo transfer was probably okayed by Ole (at the time, Ole was a peer to Murtough with equal authority), Ole probably got influenced by SAF, and it was an opportunity as we knew back then Martial was proven not to be good enough as a starting CF, and Cavani is not reliable enough despite his quality, the transfer fee was low, in hindsight, they shouldn't have signed Ronaldo.

This summer is the real test for Murtough, he'll have full authority on targets, working with RR and the incoming manager.

Or maybe the manager really wanted Ronaldo

Tchouameni, Rice and Gallagher returning from loan would be brilliant business by Chelsea but they need to find a clinical striker if they want to challenge City next season.
If they can sell 4-5 from that outgoing list, they'll go for Haaland.

So Murtough is incompetent? WTF?
If the deputy will work under Murtough, then that probably isn't the case. I guess Fletcher's going to specialise with integrating the academy players into the first team and probably spend more time with the coaches rather than Murtough. The deputy may be taking the role we were expecting Fletcher to take at the start.

If Murtough were incompetent, we'd be replacing him rather than appointing someone below him to take on some of his responsibilities.
If he is competent why are we hiring an deputy DOF? And what the hell is going on with Ralf's consultancy?

I'm not saying JM is incompetent just that hiring a deputy for him looks odd.

Maybe, it just doesn't seem logical to me.

Maybe this is Arnold wanting Murtough to delegate some of his workload to free him up to work closely with him on moving the club forward. Could also be something that Ralf has already identified, in that Murtough is unable to focus on the more important aspects of what his job should involve.

Looks like a positive move to me all things considered, as it shows the club continuing to put more structure into the football side of things.

Sorry but I disagree that it’s in hindsight, many average football fan (especially Juventus fans) could confirm that this move was never going to work out. Even the red cafe opinion was nobody wanted him before we were linked. We are not even paid to specialise in transfers which is Murtough job and even we could identify it.

Surely he’s paid so much money so he can get these decisions correct and be proactive? I refuse to underestimate him and believe that this was anything other than for gaining marketing revenue and sponsorship money.

Or maybe the manager wants Haaland, Mbappe and other players but the Glazers keep saying no until he says the name that they agree with at the right price.

Several teams have multiple directors rather than just one. AC Milan, for example, have Frederic Massara as the top sporting director with Paolo Maldini working under him. Inter have Beppe Marotta with Piero Ausilio under him. Barcelona have a club sporting director in Rafa Yuste with two different directors under him: one for the men's team (Mateu Alemany) and one for the women's team (Xavier Puig).

Now that I think about it, I think the deputy can help with distributing the workload between the men's and women's team.

On Rangnick, I don't think he was ever going to have an active role in the club after this spell. As a consultant, he can focus on his own endeavours whilst being available to offer some expert advice when needed. If we needed him in a more active role, then we'd have made him a director alongside/under Murtough.

Since establishing the current football structure at the club, where Murtough was appointed as Football Director (essentially a DoF), numerous departments and people report into Murtough, like Scouting & Recruitment, Football Academy, Football Operations, Data Science, Sports Science etc...

The Deputy DoF will take on some of the load from Murtough, since Murtough will be busy with the recruitment process of the next permanent manager /head coach, as well as players recruitment.

Key points (thanks to @do.ob in the German Football thread):

From the same Kicker article, Sven Ulreich, whose contract expires in the summer, may get an extension provided that he performs well in Neuer's place.

Exactly what he's being hired to do. A consultancy.

For them, Ole, his coaching staff that included Phelan, Murtough, and others in the club saw a value in bringing Ronaldo, what you , me, and the average fan thought, at that time, of the potential of bringing in Ronaldo doesn't matter, what mattered is what the folks at the club thought, and what I meant when I mentioned Hindsight was theirs, not us outsiders.

At that time, Ole clearly thought Ronaldo will be a good addition to the team (reports said that SAF convinced Ole), Ole was a permanent manager before the current football structure was put in place, so Ole reported directly to Woodard and had an equal authority or probably a higher authority than to Murtough.

Look, I understand why you have valid and fair reservation against Murtough, I do too, but I believe this coming summer is the real test of the new football structure at the club, which manager will be hired?, what kind players they target and bring?, what would they about the players not needed in the squad?, etc... so let's see what they do in the summer .

sorry for derailing the thread I'll stop here.

Fair enough good points. I fully agree, we can wait to fairly judge him after this huge summer for the club is over.

Ok sorry for detailing the twitter thread too, good debate!

I’m not sure what gives you that impression, absolutely no detail has been given by the club or Rangnick about future arrangements.
To be fair it's precisely because of the lack of detail. Typically when an organization clams up about a proposed arrangement they've been trumpeting it's because it's going to be less than what they portrayed it would be.

Fair enough and I see where you are coming from, but I would be sceptical about Rangnick leaving his post in Moscow for a 6 month gig and occasional video conference. The way he talks when referencing the club would lead me to suspect he’ll be very involved next season. Personally I kinda expect him to still be manager…

That's assuming the people above murtough aren't entirely incompetent
