Would rather not spend big in January and see what happens with ownership going into the summer. United do need cover at CF, but anything more than 30M for cover, especially at RB, CB, or forward line, isn't worth it.

Memphis as cover, rotating with Martial and occasionally with Marcus as CF is fine (even if Memphis shouldn't be back at the club, but here we are).

Williams or AWB as RB cover for Dalot, who apparently is injured but has additional time to recover, is fine for the remainder of the season.

the no value in the market briefings have started then. even though weve take a gazillion off our wage bill.
I think you should lower your expectations if it’s true that the club is getting sold. Nobody will want to spend too much in those circumstances

Here's what's most likely the case for January given the various United reports over the past several months:
  • With Ronaldo now released, we need a new forward in January.
    • At the moment, the journalists mostly know of our summer targets; they know nothing about any new targets for January (see Gonçalo Ramos and João Félix reports).
    • Memphis is the only new target, and he's not even likely for January.
  • Ten Hag's not keen on Wan-Bissaka; therefore, we want to sell him in January and replace him with a new right back.
    • Possible January target: Jeremie Frimpong
    • Everyone else is likely a summer target (e.g. Malo Gusto)

Yeah. More I think about it, if a sale is truly on the cards, there will likely be no spending outside of maybe the Ronaldo replacement. Hopefully the next owners have deep pockets and deep interest in the football affairs of the club.

It depends what you want to achieve. New owners obviously want United to get Champions League football as soon as possible. If we can do deal(s) now that make sense for the future and for the reminder of the season, that would help the sales of the club imo.

  • Wolves want to strengthen in the forward and centre back areas
    • Matheus Cunha is the strongest link
    • Other options available
  • Wolves want to focus on the domestic market

Tier 3:

See the previous pair of Tweets for the key info. Also, the article mentions United's interest in Gonçalo Ramos but adds that he's more likely to move next summer.

Kinda-related question - how has the Twitter fiasco affected the sources for the twitter threads? Has it decreased much?

No, they've basically remained untouched. The political accounts are the ones that are most strongly impacted; everything else has been left as is.

Why would it though?
Because while it may just be the politically-focused people leaving twitter, it wouldn't be a stretch to think that other lesser-known sports accounts start to leave.
Maybe I'm reading into it too much though. We're verging into CE territory, so I may just bring it up there later instead.

Ruud van Nistelrooij addressed Cody Gakpo's future after the practice match against Sassuolo, among other things. The PSV coach has enjoyed the striker at the World Cup and grants Gakpo 'his path'. 'There comes a time when you can no longer say no.'

No dice! If he has to leave (I like him) then we want a fee!
Wolves also interested. They have Nelson Semedo who is 29 y/o. Semedo went from Benfica to Barca for 37m from Barca to Wolves for 30m. Semedo has been extremely weak for Wolves this season. He is too soft for the PL, his work rate is horrible. Sure he got flash going forward, but he is part of the problem for them. Wolves can extend his contract to 2024.

West Ham also have depth at RD. Coufual and Ben Johnson.

These loans are pretty awful. Why do they bring in AWB? To light a fire under Semedo's rear in Wolves case? To get a back-up? To play a ton? They won't give a feck about AWB while he is on loan with them. Sure we can attach some kind of fee and the fact that they are willing to pay AWBs wages in itself proves that they aren't bringing him in "just" to sit on the bench. At the same time, they could be relegated this year.

If we hold on for a sale, they usually doesn't materialize. I recon its really easy for us to be back-seat drivers, but on many occasions we have called the bluff and ends up getting nothing. All we can do is to create some kind of auction and take the highest bid. We must be prepared to take a big loss. The only way to avoid taking these big losses is to:
(a) Play a really structured style of football with clearly defined roles
(b) Only bring in players who meets the criteria for those roles and hence always perform fairly well because they get to play to their strengths

I think we just must take the losses on guys like AWB. If we get 10m for him, its better than nothing.

Sources (Tier 2):
Manchester United have stiff competition in the battle for the coveted Gakpo from clubs of the calibre of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
Cody Gakpo will be replaced at PSV this winter if he leaves without question. Here's what could happen in the Eindhoven squad over the next month and a half.
  • PSV are targeting AZ Alkmaar's Jesper Karlsson as Gakpo's replacement.
  • Karlsson will cost at least €20m, so PSV want more than €50m out of Gakpo to make this possible.

Personally don't believe the likes of Real or Bayern would have any interest in Gakpo right now. They're names are being used to speed us up and/or pay more.
Yea Real were supposedly interested when we first bought Depay :wenger:
