Trophies as monumentally important to the club as this season’s Europa League?

Sure, but investment in the team hasn't really been an issue this last ten years - we've spent as much as anyone in world football.

I'm not sure that extra money can be described as "monumentally important"
Wage bill goes up by 33% if we’re in the CL which would eat up much of that money. Operating costs to think about as well. The revenue point is overblown.

Found it interesting with this thread that domestic trophies became the topic. I thought the OP was pretty clear in not naming any domestic trophies and thought European trophies would have been discussed. My bad, I suppose.

Anyway, can't help but feel this "trophy" (CL qualification) will determine where the club goes at the crossroads of two distinct and disparate paths. This game is as big for us as the playoff for Championship teams up to the Premier League is, if not more.

Hard to fathom what the atmosphere and energy is going to be like on the day of the final. This game is massive.

2017's Europa League win seemed important at the time. But looking back eight years later, it didn't really matter or make a big difference.

I feel the same about this year's final: if 1) this rebuild is the right thing for the team, and 2)if Amorin is the right man to do it, then the final won't matter, but may make it slightly quicker.

If we win the final this year, then here comes European Supercup, so an immediate opportunity for another trophy to start off the new season
The Super Cup is a "trophy" in the same sense that the Community Shield is a trophy.

It's just a glorified friendly.

Every utd fan will want us to win this cup .. I want it as its been the only comp I've taken interest in since February. Somehow how I think our fortunes in it has run out, I hope not..

Trophies are what it’s all about, for fans and players. Imagine retiring after playing for 20 years, and being pleased with finishing 2nd or 3rd every season.

I see your point although I don’t see it as quite the “do or die” moment you do financially. It’s more important for the momentum of the club right now than anything for me. Standards have dropped alarmingly this season and simply winning something could hopefully mitigate that and inject some positivity going into next season.

Also while admittedly I wasn’t nearly as bothered about winning the EL weeks ago now that we have Spurs in the final it’s a must-win for me.

Outside of the FA Cup for Fergie, I can't think of a single more important one off victory we've needed in my lifetime.

We're in dire, dire straits. More than it seems people want to acknowledge.

Can't ever recall being this doubtful for a final, either. We were underdogs vs. City last year, but this is different. We're abysmal.

It's a sad state of affairs when the importance and significance of winning a trophy boils down to financial fallout.

A one off victory and the financial bonus isn’t as important if recruitment doesn’t dramatically improve. We are a really poor team and our recruitment this summer and going forward is critical in term of either making this season our rock bottom or if it’s a sign of what’s to come.

1990 was significant because we had SAF, we had the spine of a team in Bruce, Pallister, Robson, Ince and Hughes, I think we went and bought Denis Irwin that summer who is one of our best ever signings in terms of value.

Winning on Wednesday will be a great night and a big financial boost for a year or two but beyond that I’m not confident it means a lot more. Can only go on what we see, and that is a club in complete disarray that won’t be fixed quickly.

The trophy is more important for stopping the spiral of negativity we're in than anything else. If we play anything like we are at the moment, we'll end up getting mauled by some of the better teams in next season's Champions League.

We're at a crossroads that it feels isn't being taken seriously, or perhaps is being purposely ignored as to not look into the abyss.

We're in a very, very bad way. We still have an awful mish-mash squad and if you couple that with failure in this final, the hopes of turning it around become remote. You can go as far as to state we're more likely to lose the outstanding talent we have in the upcoming year or two than retain them and better the squad; if we go down the wrong path it's more likely to spark an eventual exodus than it is turn around the player aspect of the club.

We need to be an attractive enough proposition for the level of player who gets us out of this bog - the worrying trend of looking at buying lowly players from lesser clubs is already starting to look like a strategy that is deemed viable for the people in charge. Any player who is about anything that is here will be watching with a keen eye themselves; it's not just a thing for fans/muppets, players want to play with peers and those they aspire to match or better.

Poor actions, positions and so forth become a habit and normalised, just as progress, winning and success does. We need this "trophy" more than even Spurs do, for my money.
