Tyler Adams…

In general, it's terrible business to ever sign a "squad player" unless that player costs absolute pennies. Squad players should be decided on merit, but every signing should be with the thought that the player improves the first XI in some way or another.
I agree. I always say, improve your first 11 then the players pushed out of the first 11 become squad options. A few on here don't seem to want that though and are happy adding squad options over players who raise the level of first team

That all sounds great. But plenty of very successful sides spend good money on players that don’t go straight into the first eleven to fill out the squad.

I thought our budget is limited this summer because of last year's spending? Or at least limited by outgoings, which are not going well.
£147m net spend last summer.

Not sure why that's considered excessive, seems about right considering we rarely spend in January windows either.

£100m net spend the year (Inc Dorgu in Jan) prior, £128m the year before that etc.

When you consider spurs have spent £159m net this year, £156m net last year, £110m net the year before that then £132m the year before that...

There's no real excuse other than our owners being the only ones in the league owning us for profit, all others seem to be passion projects or sportswashing.

While not the most eye catching or glamorous name, I am somewhat placated if he turns up well in the data analysis if that is indeed true.

We refinanced some of our loans from last summer recently.

I could understand Santos and Tielemans, however surely we can find better than this guy for that athletic DM needed

He's a 6 and our 3 CM signing. Either Santos or himself will probably be a first teamer.

Yeah it'll be Santos starting and Adams as the backup. They actually have similar tackling stats, Tielemans had more tackles than Adams as well.

Think it could be a bad move for him, the whole team at Bournemouth pressed and set defensive traps. He's going to be expected to run around and do it solo then get shown up on the ball.

I've no idea what type of budget we have so no idea honestly. The scouting / transfer department have done pretty well in identifying and signing players over the past year or so.

Very underwhelming. Are we a team wanting to challenge for the prem and champions league? Or a team that wants to compete for top 6 every year

You’d think quite a bit considering we’ve just bought in champions league money. Plus we’ve made bits of money by the sales of greenwood.

Well with these yankee leeches they are happy with top 6 hence being linked with this level of player

People should follow ineos track record in football at other clubs They aren't very good
And yet last summer is arguably the best one we have had in a while and the one before that was by all accounts, decent.

The year before we signed Ugarte and Zirkzee who are horrible. De ligt who was a bit injury prone and guess what? He's injured. Mazraoui a FB who made zero assists last season. Heaven, dorgu and yoro had being decent signings. Last season it was better but players tend to have good 1st seasons with us. It's the second season that seem to be a problem

Ineos hired and then sacked ashworth, they stuck to and then sacked ETH, they brought the bearded fool even when he dropped us to 15th place and then sacked him weeks after SJR defended him. Carrick saved their arse and yet till now he's been poorly backed.

A transfer even less exciting than Sander Berge. I still think it’s just a lazy link and there’s nothing in this.

However, it should hopefully make it obvious to our fans that we aren’t going to get a marquee midfield signing and we’ll be scrapping the barrel for the rest of the window.

I’m not for nor against this prospective transfer. He’s clearly a pretty good player, and when I hear how much the data boffins love him, I think there’s probably a very undervalued player there.

So while I am neither for nor against it, I can understand it. Tielemans is one of the best midfielders in the PL and came here to play. He was a bargain and will be a starter most of the time. Santos also came here to play, and between him, Mainoo and Tielemans, they will take most of the primary minutes across the two CM positions.

You need to be able to rotate, and cover for injuries, so in many regards getting in a 4th choice midfielder who is good across data metrics, makes a lot of sense. Signing a marquee player for 80-100m, just to bench Santos, and either Tielemans or Mainoo, makes less sense to me as a use of resources. But everything depends on price. I’d say we’d move our squad along a lot better if we signed a top quality LB, a good rotation option in midfield, and another pacey forward; than if we spent big on a CM and skimped on the other positions.

I suppose I am one of the few who thinks Santos and Tielemans are first rate additions, and that Santos, Mainoo, Tielemans, Mount and Bruno across 3 positions is a very good midfield just lacking a bit more depth. For reasonable fees I would happily take Adams or Berge to round that out.

Yeah I think pick up someone like Adams for less than 20m when you already have established high quality players its understandable. And you can probably move them on after a couple of seasons and get your money back or even make a profit.

But in our position it doesn’t make sense to pay 35-40m for someone who is a squad player at best if it works out. If the budget is small I think on need to at least be spent on a younger player with more potential.

We hhave already seen just how little Carrick played Ugarte, buying limited players just wastes money regardless of fans feeling like it is a good bargain.

Look at Norgaard for Arsenal, cheap "squad player" who was pointless because the manager simply didn't trust him enough to play a significant role. Just wasted fee and wages if they are not trusted to contribute.

Seeing the way Carrick refuses to both with Ugarte much, says to me that he won't be encouraging us to buy players who are that limited on ball. But who knows with United.

Tyler Adams is better than Ugarte. Ugarte theoretically breaks up play, not sure what else. Adams is in the top 15th percentile for aerial duels won, tackles, interceptions, blocked shots, and defensive actions. He's a lot more rounded as a defensive midfielder.

Doesn't invalidate anything the previous posters said and just being better than Ugarte still doesn't qualify Adams to be good enough for United.

There's no point buying such a limited player for any reason and especially not for a club with the (supposed) ambition to win the league, or to make a deep run in the Champions League. It would be an underwhelming, mediocre piece of business, which would leave us with just more deadwood 12 months down the line. His injury record is also shocking and especially after the disastrous signing of Mount, you would hope the club wouldn't go anywhere near a player like this.

Back and hamstring injuries galore. I wonder what the "data" has to say about these.

How long ago was it reported that we were considering plenty of options for midfield?
So now we find out that he is an option!
Who is it going to be next week so Fabrizio can have a bit of Utd gossip to put in his daily update
Unbelievable!

If we sign a starting level midfielder, both Mainoo and Santos will be on bench and only be rotation options.

Given Santos has left Chelsea for regular 1st team football, and Mainoo has been a key part in our midfield last season, we will end up creating a Chelsea like situation if our first choices are fit, bench options don't get a lot of gametime to prove their worth.

Hence a Sander Berge/ Tyler Adams type of signing works according to clubs opinion I believe. Though having watched Tyler Adams, he gives Fred vibe, amazing engine, not great on the ball.

Unfortunately budget looks lower than we all hoped

Do data boffins love him? Think that would just be ours if that's the case. Plus the data could only show ball winning and ground coverage. Anything related to on the ball he is in the very low percentiles.

Just seems a limited player for the price hell probably command. When you look that Brentford will sign Sangare for roughly the same, he just has more to his game. I would prefer we targeted less specialists or at least have big scope for improvement.

No. Save the money if we cant find anyone good. Try again later.

We are taking our demand for PL proven to ridiculous levels, whilst not willing to pay the going rate. We are acting as if all the best players in the League played in the PL from day one, watch us two years down the line haggling with Brentford begging to sign Sangare for £80m whilst they demand £100m when his data suggests he will do well and he is gettable at a reasonable price whilst we pay 50% more for a more polished Ugarte.

Where do all the strong opinions about him (mostly negative) come from? Do people on the Caf genuinely watch him with interest?

I'm barely aware of his existence.
