What on earth happened to him to miss so much football?
He's certainly bulked up in the meantime.

Literally have no idea what he is like as a player because I can't recall seeing him play for us.

Good to see him back training with the group. Hopefully back playing soon with the Thursday/Sunday fun about to start!

Story is he was offered a surgeon through the club but decided to go his own route.

The surgery wasn't a success so he needed surgery again.

If just either him or Shaw can get fit and stay fit I'll be happy. At this point I'm not even fussed which one.

You can only imagine how mentally tough it must have been recovery from multiple surgeries…

I wonder how he will cope with the physical side of defending.

Would be good to see him back in the first team but it might still be a while.

Looks like he’s beating shaw in the race for LB. Really don’t understand how Shaw can play in the euro final and then get injured again before the start of the season. Baffling

I remember seeing decent spells of him. But that’s about it. Not sure what he’s like defensively but I can see him being more of an attacking LB. Just to have a LB in the team and squad would be great.

To be fair many on here predicted that scenario when he went to the Euros.

United recommended a surgeon.
Malacia and his camp, as is their perogative, went with another surgeon.
The latter botched his surgery pretty badly.
United surgeon went in to do a salvage job and we have been extremely careful with his rehab.

I said something similar during the summer.

I think it's partly the time he's been away and also him being slightly unremarkable.

Went back and watched a few of those "every touch compilation". He is solid defensively, decent overlaps but not the best going forward.

Either way would be great to have a left footed left back available. Even a fairly middling one.

Genuinely lovely to see him back. He’s not the greatest player in the world, but he’s a very likeable lad, who always gives his all and is a very competent deputy to Shaw (or whoever our long term lb ends up being). Must have been incredibly tough going through the the last 18 months, so I’ll be be great just to see him back on the pitch again.

Yeah like others have said he could be back before Shaw as guess he may join team training next week

Seems to me that quite a few on here did not watch us in Erik's first season here as Malacia played in quite a few games.
Great to see he is winning his battle regarding his injury.

Hope he’s able to regain full fitness and form. He was a solid young player when he arrived.

If he can get back to this level, he'd be like a new signing.

I remember him showing a lot more intensity than Shaw, which was very welcome at the time. He also did the inverted full back a lot better than Shaw, or more frequently at least, and helped with build up from that position.

His presence also pushed Shaw on a lot that season so was a positive whether he was playing or not in that first season.

Hopefully he can get back up to speed and put his injury behind him.

He did have things he needed to work on before he got injured namely his defensive solidity and final third attacking. But as I recall it, he was very safe in possession (in a good way), good crisp passer and press resistant in the dribble. The question marks with him now will all be about his mental recovery. I really hope he can get back and exceed his former levels!

That was pretty much the way I saw it as well.
The mental challenge must be immense when being out for so long after a couple of operations and then the climb back to elite sport....I hope he stays strong.

The fact that he seems to have been working like mad in the gym is a really good sign for me.

I know the "new signing" trope is often mocked but I'm quite excited to have him back once fully fit.

He wasn’t very good when he was fit, and he wouldn’t get much better after being out for 2 years.

I hope Gary Neville has managed to get the pronunciation of his surname right in the time he’s been out.

‘Melissy-ah’ made me giggle initially then just irked me.

It's good to see him back and seems to have bulked up. Think one of his weakness was that he was a bit light weight.

Now, if he can sort out his crossing, he will great.
