And are improving with still a relatively low squad age.

Just wanted to throw this out with all the gnawing and gnashing with a City-Chelsea CL final.

We are 5th in the euroclubindex.

We are 5th in 538's rankings.

We need to realize the PL is a tough league and is very strong right now. City are 1st on every ranking, and Chelsea and Liverpool are also both in the top 7 (Chelsea 4th on 538 and Liverpool 6th). Both European finals were all-England affairs in 2019 and likely will again be in 2021 if Arsenal beat Villarreal.

Ole has done a fantastic job, as have the players and we are trending in the right direction. We also played well in the CL, bar couple of halves that we played with low concentration (first half at Istanbul and Leipzig).
Out of CL at the earliest stage. I wouldn't be boasting.

Please. Let's achieve things before making such claims. We didn't even make it to the CL knockout stage this season. We're competing for a knock off version of what City and Chelsea are fighting for, a trophy arsenal, fricking Arsenal are competing for. Enough pretending that we are here or there while weve done sweet feck all.

Maybe once we are actual challengers for the CL rather than cycling through not in it/group stage team/first knockout team/ then we can talk about this. Right now it's a joke to even speak about.

As i said: it's a cup. What matters is how good you are the week you play, not in general
What if Chelsea is without Kante, Silva, Havert etc. ? It could work both way and it's not even the point here.

Your logic about luck sounds quite right at first sight. But it's like saying the only difference between your worth and Elon Musk's worth is just money. You forgot the amount. The amount of luck it'd take for Porto to reach the CL final would definitely be higher than Chelsea's. Why? Because Chelsea is stronger than Porto. But is Chelsea stronger than United?

Every teams have a chance to reach a CL final once they participate in the CL. But saying every teams has the same chance is simply not true.

I agree. Fine margins and all that. Qualify from the group stage and you might find yourself all the way through to the CL final.

Didn't Real qualify in matchday 6 in 2017/18? They then went on to win it.
Yeah but Madrid have pedigree to make big claims. If they hadn't made it that year we knew they won it the years before.

Our achievements in the CL are zilch these past 8 years. We just ace the Europa and suddenly think we're top dogs.

My point is wondering how far United could have gone, based on Chelsea and City being in the final, is meaningless

United certainly look like one of the very best sides in the world this season. Still went out in the group stage though, in the end

It would be wrong of any of us to claim that United didn't deserve to go out of the CL when we did this year. Yes - we had a very difficult group, but the mistakes that we made as a collective in those three defeats ultimately illustrated a team and perhaps too a manager that wasn't ready to compete at that level yet. Just to be clear here, by 'that level' I'm not talking about the CL as a competition, but it is a fact that we were drawn against two of the best teams from the previous season, and we fell slightly short of that. It was the smallest of margins in some cases, and I'm quite confident we've have gotten through any of the other groups that the PL teams were given.

On a positive note we are a team that is growing all the time and we are clearly better than we were then. We control games better. We rarely ever look like losing a game anymore. The balance of the team has improved and we have more variation in our attacking play. If we'd have gotten a kinder draw or managed to find our way out of that group then we could easily have been one of the finalists. Its not a biased view to think that we could go very deep in this next season.

I am really confused as to what this thread is about.

Yeah we are one of the better teams in Europe.

Also the two deepest. Rich owners and excellent managers gets you success.
Yep, sort of negates the idea of any cup fluke having occurred, the two sides with the most depth look like the best teams around at the business end of the season.

Exactly. There aren't 6 teams better than us. People disagreeing with us being top 7 at least are deluded.
Caftards can’t separate emotion and facts.

They would rather cling to the fantasy that United suck as much as the did in 2014-16 and Ole and his staff are doing a terrible job.

Only the Chelsea fan Kentonio made a valid point.

United are definitely one of the strongest squads now. What they haven’t shown is they have the fortitude to win cup competitions and not choke out.

Or go head to head with City’s consistency and depth in the league. But on this point, who can. Liverpool needed a perfect storm to do it.
