United in advanced talks to confirm Betway as the new training kit sponsor

Even leaving aside the ethical reasons for not promoting gambling, from an image POV I think sponsorship from gambling companies are a bit tacky.

How much would we get if instead we got those heat pump lads that Andy Mitten harps on about as the training kit sponsor?

Players can't bet but clubs can plaster betting companies everywhere. Doesn't make sense.

It doesn't bother me.

I've become so desensitised to gambling ads at this point. I watch SportsCentre every morning for highlights and they're promoting gambling, every commercial on TV is either a gambling commercial or some pharmaceutical drug, I watch a NFL, Baseball or Basketball game and the pre-game shows has the analyst telling you about their bets and odds for the game, I watch a Youtube video and the ads are casinos or betting apps.

In a way it's had the opposite effect. I strongly resent them. I used to bet on things every weekend and since all the ads came out about 5 years ago here in Canada, I stopped gambling completely.

Please no Man United should not have gambling sponsors JMO

Recovering addict here, I genuinely think gambling is the worst.

Alcohol and Drugs...undoubtedly harm the people around you but the main damage is done to yourself. It's also pretty clear once you get past a certain point that you're an addict.
Gambling addiction can stay hidden right until the end, by which point you've ruined your family and friends futures as well as your own.

United have such a large global fanbase. Companies wouldn't sponsor sports teams if there wasn't clear evidence that it results in higher engagement and visibility from consumers. If even a small percentage of people who gamble are addicts, this sponsorship is directly attributable to thousands of negative outcomes for our fans. Awful decision, I'd rather be sponsored by Reform or Brewdog

A friend took his own life over his online gambling addiction ruining his life. This is shameful news if true.

The really shameful part of stuff like this is that you're never really selling out for 18m. You're really selling out for the difference between 18m and whatever a decent company would've paid.

Feels very tacky having a gambling company on our shirt, even if it is only our training top.

Aside from the obvious ethical issues, it also just looks kinda small time for us? I don't know, it feels very West Ham

I am reminded of the immortal words of Les McQueen, from failed 70s glam rock band Creme Brulee:

"It's a shit business, I'm glad I'm out of it"

On a side note, as a fan of horse racing I know that they are currently trying to bring in all sorts of affordibility checks for gambling at a certain level, like asking for P60's, self employed accounts, bank statements, etc.

They reckon if they follow through with it then alot of gambling with go to unregulated/black market bookies, as only about 25 % of people would be willing to give up this sort of information.

So this sort of sponsor might be short lived anyway. £16 million is a fair amount to find every year.

Crap decision in all honesty.

I wonder who's gonna be the first club to be sponsored by Pornhub

This is so gross. We don't need to lower ourselves to these betting companies

Evidently we do, for the money we want/need - otherwise this wouldn't even be under consideration

I've always liked the fact that we've never had a betting company as our main sponsor (and in fact never had a betting company logo anywhere on our shirt unless I'm mistaken?) - so I'd be a bit miffed by this, but money is money I suppose.
This. We have a huge gambling issue here in SA - as I’m sure a lot of the world is struggling with. Yet these gambling companies are printing money. Not sure how I feel about this - freedom of choice and all that.

I am proud on you. I hope you are doing well.
It is bafling how many people are uneducated about dangers of gambling.

This is shit but gambling has been all over football for years.

I remember MUTV's preview show before a match used to have a 10 minute section with the fella from Bet Fred talking about different betting markets.

Football hasn’t been a sport for a long time and simply a business therefore I don’t know why anyone is surprised, we’ve been horribly run by the parasites and Ineos wanted to cut costs and boost revenue so logical is logical regardless of morals and ethics.

Have to agree with the vast majority here and say I would prefer we gave this a miss.

I don't have an issue with Gambling. I like having a little tickle occasionally, but obviously it can be an issue for some people. I don't think we need to be advertising it. Would prefer to see the back of bookies ads on the pitch side screens, quite frankly.
