United players speed test

Pallister was the fastest over 100m at the club back when Utd had kanchelskis and probably peak speed Giggs. It doesn't matter, the same as when people point to Maguire having a high top speed, football is all about quick reactions, agility, constant short sprints, quickness on the turn.. Pretty rare for most players to ever get up to their full speed.
Tis true.
It was always the quick acceleration types I found trickiest when defending.

It's just the speed of one sprint. It means jack shite. I remember I discussed the same thing in Dalot thread last season.

Here's an example :

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/10-fastest-players-world-football-9832187

Rooney in top 10 fastest players in the world in his last season (yes his last one) and United's second fastest player after Valencia because he made one pretty fast sprint. Doesn't mean anything, at all. Of course he wasn't faster than Rashford and Martial for example. It's just the speed of one sprint.

Lukaku was never a slow player. He was quick like as someone said an runaway train. His problem has been his touch and his lack of trying.

Use your eyes, he clearly is fast. He out paced aubameyang Last season who’s supposed to be rapid.

1 test from a training session doesn’t mean anything, it was just Lukaku cherry picking a time he was the top.

Do you really think mata is faster than Shaw for example? It’s bs.
Auba was out of balance... Bailly aint fast, but he aint slow either.. Smalling is our fastest CB, but you rarely hear him get credited for it. The reason people see him as fast is because he's often dragged out of position and needs to recover. I would guess he has the most sprints in avarage of our CB's, and it aint a good thing when thats the reason.

It's how fast you are with the ball that actually matters.

Acceleration in football will always trump top speed. Likes of Dalot, Young and Lukaku may be near the top but they'll be dusted by Rashford, Martial, Greenwood etc over short bursts.

Is this genuinely a thread of people discussing made up figures? Of course it's all bollocks, we know exactly how slow our players are.

It's not that it's made up figures but they are figures taken wildly out of context and it's allowing simple-minded people like Lukaku to make presumably large inferences. It's the daftest thing I have seen come out of any of our players

What people are forgetting that running fast is just a small part of the deal, it’s running fast with the ball in control is what matters on the pitch.

Else, Usain Bolt would have been a United legend by now.

I remember Rashford saying in one of the stupid FIFA stat videos that Martial is definitely quicker than him.

Pretty stupid of Lukaku to share this tbh and no doubt will have burned bridges with his teammates. Besides one training session with no context doesn’t tell us much.

It's only 'top speed' not a great measure of anything. But telling that our midfield occupies the bottom few places since Shaw was injured

Like someone said - Pallister was the quickest with flying start. But noone could match Kanchelskis when it came to acceleration.

Same with Daniel James - he gets from 0 to max in no time.

Just shows that Lukaku is training well and ahead of some of the other players in preparation, probably because he's eagerly anticipating his move to Italy. Shaw has said he was told to only go 70%

Sure it's been said but doubtful this is a speed test. This is probably tracked speed during a training session. Hence why when Luke Shaw said he was told to go at 70% due to injury he didn't motor around the pitch.

Also harsh to Luke because he now just gets more abuse for being "fat and slow". So Rom can f off imo.

I would like to see a "Football Track Olympics" for charity one of these days.

25 m sprint - 50 m sprint - 100 m sprint and a 5000 m for players with a great engine

You could argue that the figures are irrelevant, but they're definitely not made up.

The all important context of this test is lacking: over what distance? Speed over short distances is much more important in football than one over 50, let alone 100 meters. I'm afraid that Lukaku's accelleration isn't great and he wouldn't fare that well over a short distance.

Otherwise, it's interesting to see that McTominay does not fare much better than the much maligned Matic.

Top speed means nothing in football, especially in a training session that wasn't necessary dedicated to that (Shaw would've definitely been higher if he tried, for example). It's acceleration over the first few meters that's so important in football.

Rom needs to be quick to catch up to his first touch!

Cheap Joke!

It’s nothing lost to be honest, who was trying, who was carrying a knock...but if Rom is proud of his sprint that day then good on him. Shitty thing to do to your teammates but whatever.

Return of the Rumbelows Sprint Challenge?

In a similar vein, Shoot Magazine used to tour round the clubs to find out the fastest player, hardest shot and longest throw-in.

Why was this controversial? Seems like everyone was just having a bit of fun on social media. He deleted the post anyways so no big fuss.

Shaw has already come out and said he was instructed to run at 70% for those tests.
So at 100% he'd be over 44.3(km/h) while the fastest human is at 45, seems legit.

Yeah sure he did the math before sprinting
Even at 80% he'd be at 39 km/h.

He should've discussed this with a fourth grader before pulling numbers out of his arse.

Just a measurement from one training session. Basically meaningless.

Ironically it makes Lukaku look a bit slow. What's he even trying to prove? Everyone knows he's fast, the issue is he can't recover from his sprints and looks knackered after half an hour if he's asked to press.
