Well getting someone that won the Scottish league with a team outside the Old Firm could work, I suppose.

It's good that's it'd been sorted out quickly. She seems to have done a great job at Hearts, and has a track record of developing young players there, which I'm sure was a factor in bringing her in. Think we're all expecting a tough season ahead regardless, so hopefully she gets the support she needs from the staff, players and fans.

Like the sound of that. I like that it's a female manager as well.
Really like Spanish coaches in general, focus a lot more on technique which is good especially if we are moving towards a younger team.

I'm assuming that this appointment is definite (expected to be announced on Wednesday) It will be something fresh. It may also explain our lack of signings so far.

If they spend the Malard money well then the League Cup is actually very winnable for us - teams in Europe are not in it this year

I've seen it mentioned in several sources that the reason she left Hearts was because despite her success the club was unwilling to invest any more into the team. Ironic, huh?

Besides working with Academy prospects I really want to know what formations and playstyle she implements. I really REALLY hope she does well with us, because from what I read she left Hearts after the club didn't invest in the women's team even after she won them the League Title, because if Jim and his cronies continue on I doubt she would last a year or 2 before getting fed up with them and also step down.
I dont know her enough to be excited. But I am relieved that we got her installed very fast after the Skinner news. We must have had it lined up. And that puts us back on track to make the deals we want to make in the transfer market

So looking up Hearts she was playing a 3-4-1-2 system - just reverse the front 3 players and its Amorim's system from the men's United team the past few years.
This does answer one question positively - Andrea Medina. She played both left wingback and CB, middle of the 3 at Atletico last season... And stats wise she was fantastic in the league in this 3 CB system. I was a sceptic of whether we would actually use her in our back 4 as a CB because shes quite small, despite having good aerial stats. So we'll have to see if that happens. But we may not see, because this manager comes in after having used 3 at the back... And Medina would suit playing 3 at the back so that even if her height was an issue, she has 2 other CBs to help her out. So I think this combination of manager and new player should work out well.
Also you would think Riviere and especially Sandberg would work well as wingbacks. Riviere has had decent end product the year before last with her crossing and can certainly get forward, but didnt have too much end product last season. So hopefully she can get her confidence back with that if she is asked to play that role. Meanwhile Sandberg had our 4th most key passes after Park and Malard tied, then Zigiotti. So more than Toone. She also had the 9th most amount of accurate crosses in the WSL last year, with 22. Park was next with 11... So it was a big gap. It shows how well she joins the attack and can put a decent ball into the box. So if we do play wingbacks Sandberg looks particularly suited for the extra attacking responsibility
However if we do go to 3 at the back, it would mean we need more CB options available. Turner has gone, George looks like shes next... Unless that one doesnt happen we'd have Le Tissier, Janssen and Medina and then no backups for rotation, injuries and other competitions. So surely we'd have to sign someone to help cover that formation change. Unless theres someone incredible lined up keeping George would seem like a good idea... I quite like Wilms at Aston Villa although sometimes she plays as rightback or right wingback instead, she was also used RCB in a 3 at the back at times last season. She can defend and she has some ability with the ball. She was also playing RCB when Villa beat us 1-0 last season. Also perhaps there might be a player or two she trusts and wants to bring in from Hearts. For example twin 18 year old sisters Erin Husband and Jessica Husband both played 30 league matches for her last season . Perhaps they'd be options to come through longterm like the youth products we hope to promote.

Supposedly the other signings are a CB and a left winger... not sure how the left winger fits other than a plan b if back 3 is the goal. Hill/Newell/Simpson from the academy as the extra defensive cover maybe?

Anyone know anything about her? Is this a cost saving measure on top of all the others? Something tells me she’s not making what they were paying Skinner. Hopefully she’s up for it as I do like having more women coaches.
Very likely cheaper than Skinner and not going to rock the boat with senior management over transfers (well not in the short term anyway)

Simpson should be a good fill in for left wingback. Shes a good crosser too, think more questions are there about her defending
Newell didnt do that well on loan but shes only young. But I dont think we could push her to start. Hill I havent seen at all so no comment
The club announced this before they named Skinner's replacement. I should think that they will consult Olid about what she thinks she most needs and change the plan if necessary.
I'm not sure we can clearly interpret these numbers without adjusting them for number of minutes played. Sandberg, Park, Malard, and Zigiotti all played a lot of minutes, for example, but Toone missed several months and numerous other players were lost to injury for various periods of time.
I hope she does well and succeeds in developing our young talent.
My concern is that if the women’s team isn’t properly funded, we’ll just be developing that talent for other, more ambitious clubs, while we continue to go backwards. It would be a disgrace for any team called Manchester United to be a feeder club.
And then eventually, if Olid does a good job here (in terms of developing talent - I doubt we’ll be winning anything in the foreseeable future), she’ll get poached herself by one of those ambitious clubs, having proved herself in the WSL.

Sandberg played 157 mins more in the wsl where the stats are from. So one and a bit games. Park, Malard and Zigiotti were 400+ mins more so more than 4 extra games in the wsl. However Toone averaged 1.43 key passes per 90 mins and that would take her to 23. She would still be 5th after Park, Malard, Sandberg and Zigiotti with those mins made up.
Thanks for that. I'll be interested to see if/how this changes this season. Tooney should be about as happy, healthy, and well-rested as she's been in many years, so I'm hoping we'll get to see her at her very best (again).
