True while not a trophy. To lead Holland to one of their best world cup finishes with the weakest dutch squad in memory is an achievement in itself.

Absolutely. While it is absolutely fine to question LvG's decision, tactics and football style, I don't think there is any doubt the man is a proven winner and has achieved success in every club he has been to, though the ending has mostly been bitter. I am very optimistic LvG can make our team achieve something of note in his remaining two years.

By this calculation, the 13/14 champions Manchester City barely make it to the top 4 that year

Valencia was one of the best right backs in the league last year.

Last season's LvG performance in general might be equivalent to Moyes overall but the big hope I have for LvG is due to the team's performance in big matches. We were rarely bullied last season and seem unlikely to be bullied again this season which was never the case for David Moyes. We got thumped by Liverpool, man city and it was pretty painful. We haven't had such painful days under LvG yet and that's why LvG has a bigger pedigree than David Moyes, not because he's continental and Moyes is Scottish.

I agree with this assessment somehow. There weren't many highlight RBs in the league last season and Valencia was pretty sound defensively while having few memorable forays forward including the nutmeg and assist against Liverpool. Plus he was last season working in much better tandem with Mata than Darmian had this season, though this might due to Herrera's role being limited in the side.

I am disgarding International things from him as I see that totally different from club football. Coming 3rd in the world cup is ok fair enough. But If Hodgson somehow managed that with England, would he be talked about like the Pro Van Gaal fans do?.

The things he won at barca were along time ago and things can change massively after 1 season let alone 5. I dont think he is upto it anymore to be as successful as he once was. I would love for him to prove me wrong as he seems a right character in public.

    Its just my opinion.

I hate that term deadwood it's so disrespectful to the players that actually cared about playing for United. Especially when it was used towards Rio, Vidic, Evra, Rafael and Hernandez.

He won with every team he coached except his second passage at Barcelona, as for Hodgson the key is that he didn't managed that with England.

You say that as if they're achievements on international level were the only thing seperating the two. What a bizarre comparison..

You say you disregard those years in international football and yet you still count them when you say things like this on the last page.

So in terms of Van Gaal's club career in his last 4 years in club management he has won 3 major trophies. And i think he could be forgiven for not winning one in his first year at United.

So has he still not won anything of note in years?

Herrera - he's about 25% as good as people make out.

I agree, if describing maybe a Bebe, Manucho or Obertan fair enough.

But i cringe every time i read someone using it to describe players who have been not only good for us but also loyal servants to the club.

There was a piece in the recent Mitten article that summed it up nicely about the revisionism when some especially on here describe virtually every member of our last title winning team as deadwood.

While new players are worshipped before they've kicked a ball for us. It's taken for granted they will be better than what we had.

We paid 36million quid for a 12 million quid player. In a few seasons he'll fall under the 'deadwood' category and this season, even at his age fans will be shocked to see just how low his standard is compared to the price we paid. The price will stay at 36, as those add on's just won't be achieved. If it goes the opposite way, I'll be delighted.

Young should be back up right back and not Valencia. Also Young should perhaps be given a chance to claim the spot ahead of the offensively incompetent Darmain.

We should get rid of Van Gaal and get in Klopp.

He has no outstanding quality but he is a good all rounder. Vastly overrated for some bizarre reason.

Eh. LvG might just be prioritizing building attacks from the left and might have instructed right side to keep it tight and ticking.

But kudos for presenting unpopular opinions.

I think it's because he wants to play the game at a higher tempo than the rest of the team, which is naturally endearing to most United fans. A good all rounder is an apt description.

Agree with all three. I actually like Evans too. Can't believe people suggested offering Jones for Stones.

I have a hunch that he'll feature more as VG gains more confidence in the team and decides to increase the tempo later this season.

Glad you've made your mind up on him before seeing him play a game... Hell, just look at his games for Monaco and you'd see how wrong you are

I've seen him play games, and I'm absolutely befuddled by how we could value him at 36million quid. The price will raise expectation amongst the masses and all that will come tumbling down when they actually see him play.

Rio and Vidic? I've never heard anyone refer to those as deadwood. The same kind of goes for Rafael and Hernandez. I certainly wouldn't have used the term "deadwood" for those. Rafael had a huge hardcore following on here, look at the thread when he left. Hernandez burned his bridges with some people after the comments he made when he joined Madrid so some weren't fussed when he left. Deadwood would be the likes of Ando, Buttner and Bebe, for me anyway.

I can't remember the last time I ever agreed with one of your posts, if indeed I ever have.

As for my unpopular opinion - I like Victor Valdes and think his treatment due to refusing a few U21 games has been a touch excessive. Imagine we'd similarly ostracised Scholes for refusing to play for the senior side in 2001? I know the two players and their standings within Manchester United are different but had De Gea left, would anybody support the continued selection of Romero when a far better keeper was in the stands (seemingly not given a club suit too  )?

I'd rather see Valencia or Young on the right wing rather than Mata. Mata should be played through the middle behind the striker.

I cant disagree with any of that. I wont make a proper judgement on Martial just yet as he hasn't even played for us but he could quite easily go the way you suggested and we have definitely overpaid for him. Darmian is poor going forward and LVG should be replaced when this season is over unless he wins the title.

Like the idea but I would not get rid of LVG unless he's lost the dressing room because of his own fault, or if it was the only way to sign Klopp ie he's heading for City.

Just don't think Mata will ever play there completely, as Van Gaal prefers pace and movement in that role. Or Fellaini's "plan b" height.
We'll have to make do with him showing up centrally every so often.

Whether he'd work behind Rooney's lack of movement anyway is pure guesswork.

What absolutely ridiculous comments. The 'French Zaha', what because he's black?

Fwiw, Martial at 19 has already achieved more then Zaha ever will in his career.
