I feel assure with VDS at the back, and this is before Rio-Vidic, so season 05/06 where our defense is known to be fragile. It's very impressive how a keeper taking charge in controlling his defense with constant good communications to organize the whole team even in open play, and the way he play with composure have that confidence boost to the defenders.
It really is an interesting way on how to play goalkeeper. It's like art. Or football intelligence.
