VAR and Refereeing 2025/26 | General Discussion

Never a penalty, he's not even attempting a tackle.

Maybe they should have a look at the Taty tackle in the corner and ask why he wasn't sent off.

I kind of hope this (incorrect) explanation becomes a new norm and players start exploiting it by tackling in this manner all the time because whatever shit happens while "slip-tackling" it's impossible to condede a foul xD

I am sorry but that's absolutely stonewall.

If he has 'slipped, it's because he's overcommitted before the West Ham player controls the ball.

At the end of the day, it's that player's job to keep his balance, and it's not like there's any mitigating circumstances in the playing surface being wet, like there was when Bruno was sent off.

Refs basically make it up as they go along.

I might be wrong here, didn't it rain during the second half of the game?

Didnt Herrera get sent off when he slipped in a game once? Probably the Hazard one.

Was an absolute shocker of a decision in the playoff final for my local team today. You can tell that by the fact the opposition subbed him straight afterwards

Softest possible penalty given for Bournemouth against Palace just now. Dean Henderson drops the ball, Senesi pushes past him from behind to get it, the side of his heel might just brush Henderson's knee, he goes over rolling in fake agony. Ref gives the pen. VAR agrees in 30 seconds. He wasn't even going towards the goal ffs.

Yeah, what's the point in having VAR if it's not going to make the ref look at that again?!

"Inconclusive" "we're all guessing" after seeing a 10X zoom of a ball rotation accelerating due to Sesko finger touching it.

And if we disallow goals for that the game is completely gone
I'm fine with it standing today because feck Liverpool but a fingernail, a finger or a full blown volleyball serve should be treated the same.

I thought the rule was that any contact with the hand or arm leading to a goal would be handball?

That is the rule but if you have to slow it down, magnify the shit out of it and then determine whether the spin of the ball sped up slightly then it's too much imo. I've no interest in technology being used like that. There's no time for that in any case.

I agree and I am not complaining here.

It just feels like another inconsistent use of VAR. It did show a negligible impact on his hand (which is meant to be enough) and then they uphold the decision?

The rule should also be changed back so that there’s no debate about goals like that - where Sesko clearly has no intention of handling it.

The level of contact required for a foul is not the same for both teams today.

It was deemed inconclusive. On the VAR review on one replay it looked like it may have brushed his fingers. On another it didn't. If it did touch his fingers it was very light.

I don't see that as inconsistency. The later replay where it was shown in forensic detail isn't a level of detail used in the VAR review and I don't think it should be.

Ah okay. Wasn't aware about the later replay not being part of VAR.

My main gripe is still the three minutes it takes so that we cannot celebrate in real time.

Sky making sure they get plenty of replays of Sesko's goal in, surely they could focus on how much better Utd have been, than a ball potentially grazing a finger nail.

Fecking hell the potential hand touch was completely inconsequential.

I’d also like to see a replay of the defender on Sesko just before.

I assume had they disallowed Sesko's goal for handball they'd have checked for a potential foul and penalty before that for a Jones foul on Sesko.

Then had they given a foul a red card.

They would never have given a foul or a red card, so as usual the scandal will be directed towards United and pored over interminably, lead in no small way by Mr “neutral” Neville.

If the role of VAR is to look two minutes for a totally inconsequential "handball" to disallow a goal like that, they might as well just bin it completely. Glad is stood. If it brushed his fingers, it had absolutely no impact on the outcome.

I'm just exceedingly glad that common sense has, for once, prevailed here.

So sick of this trend of VAR being used to pore over entirely inconsequential rubbish to find reasons to disallow goals, or give red cards/penalties. It's refreshing to see the refereeing team being sensible here.

Cannot recall a replay of any of the funky decisions against us from Sky.

Every penalty call we get is a checked and cleared in 20 seconds.

United need to take a run and jump at PGMOL now as we come to the end of this season.

It might be a bit performative and we wouldn't expect anything, but it might stop this kind of thing from happening heading into next season.

That was an absolute disgrace.

No replay of the Bruno penalty claim that was being checked, but time for a replay of the tame, deflected effort Liverpool put in right after.

Gaslighting us all week on week.
Atwell studying Sesko's goal for the most micro of contact.
It's becoming ridiculous.

Feels like United is the only PL team that doesn't get 50/50 calls at home.
