VAR and Refereeing 2025/26 | General Discussion

You absolutely cannot hold onto the keepers arm like that. Excellent call by VAR.
Yep, and if they'd been making excellent calls all season you'd have about 30 fewer points.

Conveniently ignoring Rice doing his trademark rugby tackles on corner.

Hes in the second phase of it because the mob around the keeper get the ball first though, although not sure if that makes any difference any more.

It’s the big fat well dones that the refs were getting from Sky for me. Not been caring about any of the shite all season.

If you look at liverpools luck with decisions last season and arsenals this time around, it’s hard not to feel you need the refs onside for a title.

Theres no one in here saying its the incorrect decision. Its the fact arsenal make these kinds of fouls all the time up the other end and they dont get called

All the fault of the refs. They didn't call out these practices all season.

If you have to watch a replay 15 times, then it is not "clear and obvious".

Anyway how come West Ham weren't given a penalty for one of the many fouls that came before the goal?

Yeah thats right.

Its an obvious foul, but Arsenal have won a title employing this tactic

Early season.

Feels like Arsenal haven't scored much from corners for months now in games.

Where Arsenal did get lucky was those penalties that should've been given against them at Everton and Brighton. Those were two tight 1-0 wins so critical mistakes in this title race.

I know people are bitter over Arsenal winning the game. I am disappointed as well but that was a clear foul on Raya. Goalkeeper get extra protection and the West Ham player clearly impedes him.

The Arsenal keeper ran into the West Ham player. Meanwhile there are multiple Arsenal players wrestling West Ham players behind them. And name one fecking keeper this year that has been protected by the referees when Arsenal have been crowding them with 3 and 4 people?

That is quite simply disgraceful refereeing, and it took about 7 minutes to reach that spectacularly shit conclusion. VAR is not being implemented correctly and there needs to be actual consequences for dreadful refereeing, whether that's on the pitch or by the VAR.

Having once been an advocate for VAR, I’m now of the opinion it can’t work in football. There’s just too much happening in the big moments, where it’s rarely black or white.

If you attempt to examine every cross into the box, in slow motion and with a magnifying glass, you’ll find numerous reasons to give a decision one way or another.

The big issue with this is it opens the game up to manipulation in a big way. Under the microscope, it’s now in VAR’s hands whether a team gets relegated or whether another wins the league.

One might have thought VAR will reduce controversy, but it’s turned out to be the opposite. I imagine there would be less uproar had that West Ham goal stood, as per the referee’s original decision.
This is quite right, and this particular decision may be the start of the end of VAR.

If you look at every corner in slow motion there will be reasons to allow or deny goals/ penalties.

Utter disgrace. The anti football tactics devised by Areteta to get to this point now get deemed against the rules. VAR needs to be examined properly or just get rid of it.

Arsenal have been doing those same fouls all season. They did it to Bayindir in the 1st game of the season FFS.

VAR is a JOKE

Definitely makes no difference. The ball is in play and he fouls an attacker in the box. An even more obvious foul than whatever happened to Raya. That was peak VAR. Ludicrous.

Correct decision? Yes.

Have Arsenal committed similar offences, including against Bayindir on the opening day, at EVERY F**KING RUGBY INFUSED CORNER?! Also yes

The VAR ref through the match ref under the bus. Cowardice.

The match ref can make his own decision, he watched the replay enough fecking times to see all the fouls from Arsenal players of more consequence than the alleged one on the keeper.

The plus side to this is they are going to have to be a lot more clear about fouls in the penalty box next year I feel.

I’d have no issues with that if it wasn’t for the fact Arsenal do it every single week and get away with it.

First of all, well done to refs (Cavanagh and those in VAR room) for making the right decision given the pressure and circumstances. Absolutely right decision.

Second of all, fouls in the box should be given against Arsenal as well. Just go back to first game of the season and foul on Bayindir. Not as clear as foul on Raya but it's a foul. There were other examples.

This. Took so long but a ‘clear and obvious error’. The cheats have prospered.

Will they feck. The VAR functioned exactly as intended and handed the title to Arsenal and sent West Ham down.

Who else thinks that the goal is given if it was earlier in the game but they completely bottled it because it was the end

The Todibo shirt pull is worse than the Pablo forearm.

One of the things I hate about the ref being sent to the monitor is they never show good angles. You have minutes to put it together and you give him a view from the top of the stand that is near impossible to see!

After he made the call they showed the incident from a completely different angle and that was first time I noticed Todibo pulling Raya's shirt. However that wasn't shown in any of the other replays so amazed if Kavanagh saw it so he purely based that decision on what he judged Pablo did.

Standing your ground next to the keeper and literally putting your arm across his face to stop him collecting the ball are two completely different things. If people think this is fine, show me footage of an Arsenal player doing this to a keeper and the goal being given.

I’m gutted the goal got chalked off. I don’t want Arsenal winning the title either. They play pretty dire football and seem to live off set pieces. But that was a clear foul. It really shouldn’t even be up for debate.

I don't know but I do know if Arsenal scored that goal it wouldn't have been reviewed or even a talking point.

Arsenal have been so lucky this season. Ridiculously so. But it also was a foul to be fair. If it was Arsenal instead getting that goal everyone would’ve been saying it was a foul for sure.

Strange they ignored the Arsenal players committing fouls. Has anything been said about it post match?
