VAR and Refereeing 2025/26 | General Discussion

He also got infront of him and it wasn't shoulder to shoulder. Mendes was absolutely trying his best to get his arm in and outmuscle Madueke back, and instead he lost balance and fell over. Obviously the hook on the arm played a part but honestly that's just part of being strong in those 50/50s imo. He had to be stronger and was incredibly lucky to escape giving away a penalty.
The only luck involved was that it wasn’t one of the useless refs we’re used to watching every week. Mendes didn’t trip him, didn’t push him or even pull him. Madueke went down and pulled Mendes with him.

The Athletic's refereeing expert makes it sound like a judgment call, rather than a hard and fast rule:

Usual suspects circling the wagons.

It was an obvious error. But that’s ok. Referees are fallible. It just winds people up when rent a quote referees and refereeing experts refuse to admit that mistakes and bad decisions can happen. Only makes the whole discourse more inflammatory.

Would love this standard of refereeing every week in the pl.

No pandering to the players. F u with your time wasting.

Our referees are sh!t.

The tweet says that "both have a stepped down sanction", meaning a red becomes a yellow and a yellow becomes nothing. I wasn't aware and maybe it's inaccurate, but it does cover the yellow part.

I would love to see that in writing. Sounds extremely made up to me. Also makes no sense whatsoever. Why even mention prevention of a chance to score? That’s not what he should have been booked for. He should have been booked for a reckless, potentially dangerous foul.

If two players run for the same ball, and both shoulder barge each other with equal strength, but one falls over then it's no foul.

If one player beats another to the ball, and the player behind falls into him as a result of losing out on the 50/50 then it's a foul. Its quite simple really. I don't even care that Madueke went looking for it because Mendes has taken a gamble to outmuscle him, including having his arm over his shoulder to try and pull him back. He falls over onto him. I get why few here agree but its nothing like Havertz who kept going down trying to hold the ball up, i think Madueke did enough to win the foul. (Again not that i care, i just prefer a spade to be called a spade and enjoy the fact for once Arsenal were screwed over in same fashion we all have all season).

I think the ref was fine, but I also think that a great deal of the praise for the performance on here is based on him giving a lot of the 50/50 calls in general play to PSG or playing on when Arsenal were calling for fouls, blowing for HT at a corner which you never see. I am pretty certain that if Utd got the exact same reffing performance the match thread would have been full of "Ref if shit" "Ref is Bent" "feck this Ref", why? Because literally every match thread this season was like that. And last, and the season before that, and before etc.

3 major decisions, Saka handball, no pen for me, but given how soft some pens in Europe have been around handball I expected it to be given
PSG Pen, Pen, discussion around a second yellow, very close to being one, could have no complaints if it was given, a 50/50 that went to Arsenal and a major one.
Madueke Pen, probably the right decision but seen them given.

If the defender falls onto the attacker as a result of having his arm hooked (called a near side under-hook in BJJ) by the defender then no penalty is the correct decision. You can see that is what Madueke was going for.

I think the difference is Madueke hooks Mendes’ arm, not the other way around. It’s a bit like you won’t get a foul if you’re pulling shirts equally.

Much like Salah when he injured himself in the Champions League final.

Madueke could have got in behind there had he not engaged.

9/10 from the ref last night. Beautiful performance. Saw Arsenals bullshit from early. Bookings for time wasting, not letting them take 2 mins to set up a corner. Booked Arteta for his touchline antics. 2/3 penalty calls right.

The only blemish was Trossard’s handball ‘assist’ for Havertz’s goal (similar to Mbeumo vs. Forest) and the Saka handball penalty missed.

PGMOL should take notes.

Ref was fecking excellent. I agree with basically all decisions. Saka was as much a handball as Mbeumo, and we all agreed that's not a handball, Madueke wasn't a foul, not sending off Mosquera was maybe a bit too lenient, but I didn't mind it in that situation.

What I particularly liked was how visibly fed up he was with antics and acted accordingly. From denying them the corner after their usual wind up to booking Mosquera for timewasting, fantastic job.

Football, both PL and European, would be much more enjoyable with more of that.

Thought that referee was pretty good in terms of not buying into Arsenal’s dark arts. Blowing up for half time after Saka took 5 minutes to get to the corner flag was a solid choice, as was the the booking when they decided to start time wasting 20 seconds into the second half.

Yup, really wish more refs would do what Siebert did and just not put up with nonsense like what Arsenal has regularly shown this season.

This makes no sense, how can you say everyone was happy because the decisions all went PSG's way, then list 2 out of 3 big decisions that actually went Arsenal's way?

Most satisfying moment of the game, apart from Gabriel smashing his penalty into row Z, was the ref blowing for half time when Arsenal were taking an age to take their corner.

Please note, it wasn't was he didn't "let" Arsenal take the corner. He was allowing them to take the corner, but the game had gone past the allocated added time and Saka (I think) was strolling over like he had all the time in the world. The usual shit they pull at set pieces.

About time a ref stood up to it.

The Clive Thomas school of refereeing.

I did enjoy that, too. I'm generally very much of the opinion that a ref should "let the scene play out", within reason. Let an attack finish, let a corner (or even a series of them) be taken until the ball is dead or cleared, etc. But when a team has been timewasting for more than half an hour already, and seems very unenthusiastic about taking their corner, too? They can get bent then. Should have shown a trace amount of urgency then.

Generally thought the ref team did a very good job yesterday. Held a consistent line in terms of leniency and card thresholds. No big decision I'd call blatantly wrong. And most importantly, didn't put up with any bullshit.

For me, this was 10/10 referee's performance. The reason why he took away the corner from Arsenal was because the throw in that preceed the corner, Arsenal took 60+ seconds. First the ball came to Saka, then he threw it to Mosquera, than Mosquera to Rice. They know who their throw in taker is before the game. A minute. Clear time wasting. After they got the corner, Saka started his slow walk, while the 6 minutes of added were up, and Arsenal started their "we set up for a minute on corners" routine. I was so happy that he put a stop to it in a spectacular way.

Second half starts, he books Mosquera right away for time wasting, thus allowing much faster gameplay. This was helped by not giving Havertz a sniff of a foul everytime he went down diving.

Arsenal in the Premier League were used to getting their way with buying fouls (Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel do this), Raya going down with a "cramp", and taking minutes to restart the game with throw ins, as their weapon to kill oposition flow whenever they were under pressure. This referee has studied Arsenal to the letter. None of this was entertained.

What saved Mosquera from a second yellow was the fact that he got the first one for time wasting, and I think this was in the referee's mind.

The penalty on Madueke. Rice and Arteta post match interviews were a telling sign that they thought that it wasn't a penalty either. "I've seen them given" was such a soft reply, to a coach that never misses a chance to stick it to a referee whenever there is a mistake against them.

All in all, perfect performance from the referee.

Agreed. You cannot allow such amount of time like setting up a play for a quarterback. So much time wasted. Like many said before hope PGMOL grow a pair and start reversing decision if too long is taken for these corners and throw-in

Collina also explained the new rule for players who cover their mouth with a hand, arm or shirt in confrontation with an opponent.

This will now be a red card after the controversial incident involving Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr in a Champions League game in February.

Prestianni received a six-game ban from Uefa for homophobic conduct.

"If the conversation is friendly, they can continue to do it without any problem," Collina said.

"When the conversation is confrontational, covering the mouth means that you are doing something very wrong, potentially, and the sanction is the red card."

Collina also said his referees would be ready to monitor grappling inside the area, with officials provided with data on the tactical approach of teams.

Looking forward to this new rule next season and the wildly inconsistent application which will result.

Just saw clip when Evra celebrate win against racist cnut or average scouse, and refferes are stoping him. Disgusting.

The delayed offside flag could almost become a thing of the past after Fifa unveiled new technology to be used at the 2026 World Cup.

Fifa will introduce advanced semi-automated offside for video assistant referees (VAR) which should make decisions faster and mean an assistant can raise the flag rather than wait for a move to play out.

A real-time audio alert will be sent to the assistant if a player is more than 10cm offside.

Previous versions of the technology tested at the Club World Cup and the Intercontinental Cup only notified the officials if a player was greater than 50cm offside.

The official will remain in charge of when to raise the flag and stop play. They may keep the flag down if they suspect there has been a malfunction, but Fifa says a series of failsafe measures are in the technology to prevent errors happening.

The technology will still be unable to pick out the closest offsides, while there are limitations if players are on the ground or if there are several too close together.

It can only be used for positional offside and not for subjective calls, those which require interpretation around whether a player has interfered with an opponent without touching the ball.

Fifa hopes it will remove some of the frustration felt by supporters and players, and reduce the chance of injury due to needless passages of play when an offside flag is going to be raised.

UEFA have appointed the Somali referee, Omar Artan -- who was barred from entering the US to ref at the WC, to ref the Super Cup between PSG & Aston Villa in August.

Why have the refs stopped booking players for waving imaginary cards at this tournament?

I've seen it a few times now go unpunished. Mac Allister just did it there and the ref let it slide.
