VAR and Refs | General Discussion

It highlights that the changes this season to stop VAR from interfering with the referees on field decision is a complete failure.
Yup. Howard Webb has done a extremely shit job since he stepped in. He’s somehow managed to
make everything worse

Why didn’t VAR get involved in Bruno’s red? They look ridiculous now that it’s been scrapped

Is the VAR official being put on the naughty step for a week or is that only for decisions that impact other teams?

I was semi looking forward to us playing without Bruno for a while…….
Obviously the right decision though

It was so bad, he thought it was a yellow.

Still annoyed with Maddison taking two steps after the tackle, THEN collapsing and screaming. And then saying unlucky to Bruno.

Only just seen this. The bit where he says “there, that’s the assistants view” is hilarious. It is literally the exact opposite of the assistant’s view!

Not to mention how fecking dumb it is to blather about views as an excuse for a poor decision when the VAR official can see every view.

Absolutely, the exaggerating was bad enough, but to then have the cheek to go over to Bruno and sympathise with him saying it was never a sending off. What a snake.

He should be retroactively punished for simulation.

Where's the media uproar? Also puts any United fan who agree with the red card to shame. We don't just have Player FC we also have Anti-Player FC

I can see a few yellow cards for delaying restart coming United's way. How dare they appeal a ludicrous decision and make them look like idiots !

To be overturned this quick with no fuss. I appreciate the admission and all.... but what a shambles for the refs

Knowing PGMOL, they will overturn the ban while still insisting that VAR made the right decision and shouldn't receive any criticism.

Great that there is zero consequences for the useless officials involved too… every official and VAR for United’s match on Sunday have been rewarded by getting to officiate more games this weekend. No three match ban for any of them.

Peter Bankes who was on VAR and didnt send Chris Kavanagh to the pitchside monitor when he should have is refereeing the City game tbis weekend while Chris Kavanagh is VAR for Everton v Newcastle

We aren’t Liverpool so no apology from PGMOL or suspensions for officials (like it happened after our game vs wolves last year)

Double standard again for united. Curtis Jones slipped on a ball and the ban stood.
Yet Mac Alister had the red card rescinded for this challenge which was studs up and actually connected with the player so pipe down.

Presumably now it’s been overturned, Webb will have to deal with it and explain how the VAR messed up so badly. This is precisely what VAR is supposed to avoid. The audio around it will be very interesting.

It’s the same message time and again when this sort of error occurs. Take away the “clear and obvious” wording and just let the VAR decide if the correct decision was made. If there’s doubt, the ref can go to the screen and they can have a sensible discussion about it. It’s imperative the correct decision is reached, not that the ref is prevented from “feeling bad” because his colleague disagrees with him.

That show Owen hosts with Webb discussing the decisions is the most gaslighty bullshit on TV. He will find a way to stage manage it.

It’s a same pool of referees who get selected as the VAR so they find it easier to hide behind “clear and obvious error” than calling out a pal for their on-field mistakes.

Worse yet, they fear that the same might happen to them during their next on-field referring role.

The answer is to train a fresh batch of referees from the ground up to make decisions not on the field but through watching highlights. These are not similar skills. And these are the guys who should get scheduled for VAR roles, not the on-field blokes.

Gallagher never fails to piss me off. A minute of dancing around not calling it what it is - a terrible decision all round by the refereeing team, including VAR.

"Yellow would be more palatable" is kind of like saying a red isn't objectively wrong, but subjectively a yellow would have been fairer. They just can't admit their errors in a straightforward manner. It's infuriating.

Every single person knows its not a red. We don't need to see all the angles of why the ref and linesman decided x,y and z. Explain why VAR didn't intervene, or what logic may have existed for VAR to go with the onfield when it has all the angles. All he does here is partly justify the wrong onfield call and doesn't address the actual real error that has annoyed people? I must be misunderstanding the point of this show surely.

Webb was quite annoyed by the negative focus on VAR in the media, I think there were a few articles about it when he first took over, he had a chat with Gallagher about how things were being portrayed and since then he's been very careful of not saying anything negative.
