VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Referees are useless. How can they need so long to watch a video and make a decision?

If this wasn't Real the decision would have been made already. Look how quickly they chalked off Alvarez penalty for a touch that was naked to the human eye

If attacker's goal side and you put both arms around him, you're asking for trouble.

In the same fecking match they awarded a penalty for holding onto an Arsenal player with one arm. Who dived just as blatantly as Mbappe. And of course it was the same player who was holding onto Mbappe for the second incident. It’s a nonsense. The whole thing. It’s ruined football.

Agree. They can't have been looking at if Mbappe would have got on the end of it either as Merino never was at the other end.

Tonight has been a masterclass in how not to officiate a match. From the ref, to the var officials, this has been a farcical spectacle - if this was somebodys first football match, they would think the whole thing is preposterous.

For what its worth, i think the foul on mbappe is more of a foul than the arsenal penalty.

I don't understand why they can't just introduce a rule where they have say 60-90 seconds once a VAR check has started and if the time elapses the on field decision stands. 5 minutes is just pathetic.

Problem I have with VAR is it completely deletes the spirit of the laws of the game.

An offside shouldn’t be judged by the millimeter but is the player gaining an unfair advantage? Especially with « passive offside », none of the defenders and especially not Rice were looking at Rodrygo.

On the other hand players are allowed to dive all the time which is really ruining the quality of the game

I’ve heard this suggestion a few times and I think it’s a terrible idea. Will probably just fluster the referees into making even worse decisions.

I just wouldn’t have VAR to start with, anyway.

Ridiculous that it took them about 10 minutes to take that decision. This is how you feck up and absolutely destroy an already damaged part of the game. Wish they could just roll back the VAR.

This is the referee's night. Not mbappe, not vinicius, not rice, not saka. We're all watching a referee dictate a football match

If that's offside, why did they get the ref to go to the screen? Surely VAR team should state on/off?

If they can't make a decision in that time then is it really a clear and obvious error in the first place though? These are meant to be blatant, not requiring 20 replays from 5 angles to decide.

No, but putting a timer on them will just encourage them to rush decisions to begin with.

There are too many refs who love to get on the camera these days. Continuously looking to run in and be mediator in corner scuffles, wanting long chats with players over fouls, being buddy buddy with players.

They think they are part of the attraction. They're not.

Ah I agree. And 5 minutes for the pleasure of that too.

All of that is true, but I also think that with var guys especially there is just not enough training. You can sense the giddiness when some var is getting involved, its like they havent been trained to understand that there might be a game where they dont get involved. It's as if they're overthinking and act as if everybody in the world is just waiting to see what they do next. I can just imagine them squirming in their seats, over analysing everything then getting involved.

Can't wait until this garbage is removed. Just play the bloody game. Pulling back this, checking that, microscopic offside the other. Every time I ask myself has this improved the game, the answer is a most definite no. When this keeps happening across the board, maybe it's not the human refs that are the issue. People keep hammering about this mythical training that will create these refs across the world that will be completely perfect, and when you combine that with a myriad of rules and checks about their decision stacked upon one another, and when you complety remove subjectivity from it, then VAR will create a utopia of complete fairness and ultimately a pleasant game. But until then, it's this fecking shit. Refs second guessing, ref power dynamics, player and crowd pressure, and everything else.

These jokers should never get a knockout CL game again. Just an endless run of incorrect calls. Terrible refereeing and linesmanning

100%. And let’s not ignore the likelihood that VAR is making the onfield officials worse at their jobs. It’s human nature to avoid making tight calls and hope VAR will intervene. Nobody wants the humiliation of being forced to look at a screen in front of millions of people because some dude with a laptop thinks you cocked up. Which, in turn, caused a net increase in the rate of bad decisions. Because VAR won’t intervene unless the issue has crossed that mythical “clear and obvious” threshold.

Not sure how you can give one penalty and not the other
Neither were pens though.
Wouldn’t have affected the result anyway but sure as shit affected the spectacle.
Truly awful refereeing

VAR is a joke in the Arsenal game, since when is holding from corners being enforced? Should be multiple pens every match for it.

On the Mbappe penalty that's overturned, is it for offside?

There's definitely a lot of contact from Rice, it doesn't even come close to being a clear and obvious error that would warrant a var check. It also took 6 minutes

Almost seems like VAR wanted Arsenal to win, as corrupt as Mbappe getting a 1 game ban in la liga for a leg breaker stamp.

Football is such as mess at the moment.

Total shambles. And I keep reading on here that the only problem with VAR is the standard of refereeing in the PL. Go figure.

One solution to this is to remove the "clear and obvious" threshold.

Why have VAR got involved for the Pen on Casemiro, pretty much zero contact, there's no clear error there at all? The second yellow for Tolliso in this game was also farcical. Lyon got absolutely done.

Zero contact? He clearly booted casemiros boot and not the ball. I’m not sure you’re allowed to just full force kick someone’s foot in the box even if you are aiming for the ball

Because VAR is a load of shite and the whole “clear and obvious error” clause is completely meaningless. I’m just baffled that anyone thought it could make VAR any less shit.

And yes, I was irritated that VAR did its best to take the fun out of the Harry Maguire winner. A moment for the ages, slightly soured by this absurd technology.

For all the crap I give refs, I thought the one last night was really good. Let the game flow and seemed to carry himself with genuine authority.

Another VAR point from last night -

why was there such a long VAR check for our second goal (Dalot) if not re-reffing the game? At best it was a ridiculously soft free kick for the defender, definitely not an offside check as dalot was never in front of the defence, and certainly not a red card check.

More like they just ignore the clear and obvious error part when they want to give a decision, VAR is pretty much just match fixing when they feel like it. You'll see similar minimal contact with no intervention thousands of times a season.

Giving a second yellow as well for just running, absolutely laughable from the ref.

The last couple of days have again shown VAR is a blight on the game and must be scrapped ASAP. Better to still have errors but a flowing game with the ref in charge.

Ref last night was fecking shite.

Edit: I did enjoy him telling the lad pretending to have a head injury to get up though.

What are your thoughts on Maguire being hauled to the ground? Are you willing to balance the narrative here?

What did he do wrong? The one real mistake was the sending off, but you can see why he gave it. The problem there was the stupid VAR rule that prevents it from being used.

He was definitely being pulled so it could have been given. But he was also pulling the defender's shirt, so six of one...
