Feel for him a bit. I think he's the best of our bad players, if that makes sense?

You can see the Varane is multiple levels above him and from here on in he's going to be a squad player. Maybe we could try him out in midfield as he can't be any worse than Fred but I don't know. Maybe that's not the best idea.

He made some fabulous headers. I thought he had a good game and he's a definite upgrade on Lindelof. Doesn't detract one bit from my point though.
But what’s the point in playing him DM? Make a case. Honestly sometimes I think you’d argue with yourself in an empty room

Will still get 20 or so starts this season.
But should never ever have been a definite starter for a club with our aspirations.

I haven't said he could play in DM, but sure, I'm the one who would argue with myself in an empty room. You carry on taking shots at a player that didn't even play.

I was replying to someone who asked could he play midfield and I gave the reasons why I don’t think he could, I didn’t even mention his ability to panic and play sideways when under pressure. These are all real issues

The case is pretty obvious, isn't it. Our current options are very, very underwhelming and it's not looking likely we'll sign a new one. Lindelöf is a better passer than Fred, better defensively, better in the air, calmer on the ball and a decent ball-carrier. Nobody is saying he's the perfect solution. But does he have enough of the required qualities to make it worth a shot for a two-game experiment? Maybe.

If we had lesser opposition coming up as our League Cup opponent I wouldn't mind him being experimented in DM there.

Still, I'm probably just getting desperate or crazy. Or both.

I dont think its a bad suggestion to try him as a DM given some of the 'longer' passes he makes which have lead to chances and goals for us.
Although it would be weird if we just throw him into an upcoming game, its something you do pre-season or a cup game (and we really should just buy a specialised DM)

I think Lindelof will get plenty of games.

At this point I would rather gamble with Lindelof in midfield before playing Matic again.

Not making our best 11 doesn't make him a bad player. He's a very solid 3rd choice for us and I reckon he's gonna get plenty of game time regardless

There are so many shortcomings in his game that playing him as a DM would be ludicrous.

Maybe we will play 3 at the back in some games - he may start those perhaps. Rather than that he has a very hard time competing with Maguire for a spot beside Varane now, considering it’s usually very limited CB rotation.

He's living rent-free in your head.

Maybe we should have saved the money for Maguire and directly got Varane. Still not 100 % convinced by the former and Lindelöf might have formed a good pairing with the latter.

He must be tested as DM. I know its not Fifa, but cant stand Fred or Mctominay at the moment.
He's not press-resistant enough to be a deep playmaker, and he's not really a ball-winning defensive midfielder either. So at best he's a budget Matic or a budget McTominay. He could certainly be more consistent then Fred though.

If he's suppose to be a replacement anywhere else than at CD it is as RB, where he played in the Swedish U-21. The problem there is that he's not better than Wan-Bissaka, and he doesn't have other qualities like Dalot have. So at best he's a replacement when Wan-Bissaka is injured and Ole wants a safe defensive RB.

However, with the amount of games we play, he will get enough matches to keep satisfied and stay, I'm sure. I'm also sure that at times Ole wants to use a 3 back-line, where Lindelöf has been at his best.

Good game, strong both on the ground and in the air (9 headed clearances). Good positioning.

He's a really good player and it's a shame for him to lose his place, but I'm glad he's being mature about it. Maybe we can experiment with a back three in the cup games, if we could make that system work that might be his way back into the side.

Massive performance this night. Did nothing wrong really. Showing what level he can play on. World class. Maybe with an extra confidence boost from being our new captain (even if he almost never does a bad game for Sweden).

Seems to improving some aspect to his game as he's getting into his prime years, I'm really glad at the squad depth he provides moving foward.

If he can play in DM, you replace Fred and allow either Pogba or VDB a more free role in midfield. Right now we have to pair Fred and McT because one of them is not able to do that alone.
I slated Lindelof more than anyone as I simply don't rate him as a central defender, but he does have good passing ability and knows how to tackle (when he feels like it). I think he will do a better job of reading the game in midfield as he won't have the pressure of being the last line of defense. It won't cost anything and might be something that might be worth a try in a few games.

Can't believe I am defending Lindelof, but here we are.

It'll cost us games.

I can't believe people actually think Lindelof can play in DM and allow us to drop McFred from the team. He's a player that doesn't try to tackle and intercept passes and you're expecting him to win the ball for us in midfield?

I can understand people are concerned with Fred. He loses possession often and got dribbled past six (6!) times last match which is horrible. But Lindelof is not the solution. He has some good attributes for a DM but he’s also lacking some skills you need. Anyway, no matter what abilities, that’s a transition you need to do in the pre-season, and secondly we need at least three reliable CBs through the season. City have four very good CBs. Lindelof and maybe also Varane can also play RB if we end up in an emergency in that position.
