I see Samuel Luckhurst gave Lindelof a rating of 4 today, if Maguire was playing and had performed in a similar way Lindelof did today I'm sure he'd give him a 8.

Unfortunately his not the only one. My guess is that some of Lindelofs critics are only able to recognise hard facts such as areal duels and tackles (which of course are important) but not capable of spotting a player who positionally is playing well (not needing to tackle to the same extent) or where other areas of the game are influencing the defensive work, such as the lack of a DM.
Another guess is that they are maybe supporters of old school english football where a defender should only be big and strong and there is no value of passing, reading the game or being skill full .

he lost a couple of headers but except that agree he looked good.
I think it is mostly his style which is the opposite of the classic heroic last ditch tackling CB.

His inability to win aerial duels is literally a liability in the premier league. Every other aspect of his game is solid.

All teams have to do is put 3 players around him and lump the ball at him. All of a sudden it’s a 3/4 vs 2/3 and always ends up in a high percentage chance for opposition.

Varane is outrageously dominant in the air so they don’t bother piling on him.
So far this season Lindelof has been very good in the air. He has played 6.25 matches and only lost 5 aerial duels all together. 3 of them were in today’s game. He has won 18 aerials. That’s winning 2.9 per game and 78%.

Varane has won 17 aerials and lost 7 in 6.5 matches. That’s winning 2.6 per game and 71%.

I also think Lindelof knows that Varane is quick and that he can go for the duels and if even he misses them Varane is quick enough to cover him. With Maguire he knows that if he misses anything it's goodbye.

Could absolutely be the case. It it’s not just the speed, it’s the style of playing. Both Lindelof and Varane automatically fall back to cover when the other CB goes for an aerial duel. It’s part of their game style and roles. Both are good at covering and protecting/closing down space behind themselves and others. Maguire does not do that. He’s not that type of player. His strength is to attack the ball in front of him.

To me he was the MOTM. His sprint from the Everton box to our box was really good. There were players closer to goal than Lindelof and if they had sprinted we may have enough back to stop the goal.

Yeah I don’t get that. I thought Lindelof was fine today.

He's been solid if unspectacular this season so far but that's more than we've got from Maguire. On this form he should probably keep his spot.

Interesting observation. That could also be why Maguire did very well in Euros. Playing with someone similar-minded…?

Feel bad for him. The Maguire injury was a good time to develop his partnership with Varane and thinks were looking up.
Now he is stuck with Bailly again and the whole defensive quality will drop and he will be blamed for everything.

Lindelof makes us vulnerable even playing with Varane. The issue with him is that he doesn't communicate with the full-back. You can tell the difference with Varane playing next to AWB and Lindelof.

Opposite. It's a good time to show he's a leader at the back, like he is with Sweden, and grow a pair.

Our next run of 6+ games are huge, and with Prince & Raph out he needs to bloody prove a lot of us wrong!

Ok first half for a poor Sweden, but thought he had a great second half where his positioning was spot on and he could always control the ball without any drama.
Also “assisted” the first goal with a long ball to Isak, who got the penalty.

Was good, ta bad he's partner played for the opposition.
Lost hes balance in a duel with vardy in first half and that challenge in second was abit stupid but he took it in the face after haha.

Nice pass to rashford with he's weak foot.

Football porn on his assist. World class that.

Was at minor fault at the 4th goal and was really clumsy against Vardy once. Decent performance with a magic moment.

Good assist, constantly lost out to Vardy's determination in the first half and got booked soon into the second half overcompensating when he was no doubt told off at half time

I swear he must have had 3 or 4 assists like that to Rashford in his time here. Very nice pass.

He always struggles against Vardy. His assist was ace though. He's having a better season than Maguire and it's not even close

Even with the odd mistake, I still think he's been our best defender this season. World class assist for Rashford's goal as well. Fair play to him.

His assist today for Rashfords goal was absolutely majestic.
Our best cb with the ball at his feet and been our best cb overall this season.
Maguire should be backup to him for now.

That's why I was hoping for Bailly today even though I don't rate him overall.
Bailly next to Lindelof today and we win that game.
Vardys pace doesn't bother Bailly.

Seems like he's more than up for the fight for his place, fair play to him.

Ironically Varane might have had a Telles or Buttner like effect on Lindelof. Let's hope he doesn't let his foot of the gas and keeps it up.

Who did he outpace? His goal was positioning and moving off his man.
