Viktor Gyökeres - Arsenal Player

Yeah I hear you. Just correct me if I’m wrong here but outside looking in, it seems Arteta has become extremely “risk averse” and is now classify him as a defensively minded coach reliant on set pieces. I actually think 2-3 years you were a fun team to watch and I’d have classified Arteta as an attacking coach. Would that be fair? Maybe coming so close and not being able to get over the line and win a title the past few seasons have just made him this conservative. And maybe, just maybe, this switch to “set piece Arsenal” (often arguably deploying 4 center backs in defence) has some sort of link to a lot of your attackers losing form? Maybe I’m completely off base of course.
It’s the same question I wrestle with. Has he changed, or have the players got worse/ lost fitness?

Bit of both is the answer, of course, and we’ll learn more over the next couple of years which has been the more important factor. I really hope we have a better attack next season.

Dreadful striker, reminds of Falcao when he came to the PL after recovering from ACL injury.

15 goals so far, will probably hit 20 before the end of the season and more or less scored the title winning goal.

People should just drop the sour grapes at this point and admit it has worked out.

Still has a fecking shit celebration.

He's wank but may have just won them the league

Don't think arsenal give a feck about the former, as well they should

He did exactly what he was bought for. Score important goals and make them more gritty. Fair play to them. For me arsenal as Champions is ok, better than Pool or City so let it be

It's a bit like when Chamakh or Bendtner scored important goals. We all knew they were absolute wank but we celebrated anyway

Bendtner had some talent....Jeffers would be my pick to line up next to Chamakh. Our "Fox in the box".

Although Gyok has already a much better return.

I tuned into MOtD expecting to see him do something good. Instead he’s in the right place at the right time for a tap in.

And yet, he is likely to be a league winner in a few games. Talk about buying a dud and it still working out. Unbelievable.

This is an underrated quality in football and in life generally.

How many times was RvN in the right spot for a tap in. He wasnt the most amazing player overall, but the fact he knew where to be made him a great finisher. It is a great quality especially for a forward.

Stop it. RVN worked and foraged for position; it wasn't luck. And his technique was exquisite as was his situational awareness in and around the penalty area. Not equivocal to balls serendipitously bouncing in off Gyökeres.

Whereas Gyokeres is teleported into the right position by a third party?

Feck me, now we’re talking about Gyokeres and RVN in the same sentence.

One scored 20+ league goals a season four times out of five (injured the other one).

One has scored v Everton, Spurs, Sunderland, Leeds, Burnley and Forest in the league. Which is his level.
Gyokeres would be lucky if he’s compared to Darren Bent let alone RVN.

Wow. It was the point of saying how important the attribute of being at the right place at the right time....not comparing them.

Arsenal wins the league means Gyokeres is a good buy even if he is a dud. It is an argument that is difficult to overturn.

You compared them by using RVN; if Gyökeres so happens to be in the right spot so many times that it’s uncanny, there would be grounds to do so. But you already knew that.

Indeed. If they win the league, how good/bad he is becomes moot and immaterial as they’ll have achieved their objective regardless and completely irrespective of the critique of Gyökeres and his game.

It is a bit ridiculous to get angry because someone compared a single aspect of another player to RVN. Nobody said they were equally good or influential. The point was, that he is apparently good at being at the right spot at the right moment. Which is important and an ability players like RVN shared. That is all.

Gyokeres would be taking a seat for Chicharito… he’s levels below Ruud. He’s levels below Adebayor ffs

Tbf if they want to convince themselves that he's a good signing and not go and sign a decent striker then let them crack on.

Signing of the season

Because he did it once? That’s not a commonality with someone like RVN; might as well have used Chris Woods.

Only if it's an actual characteristic of his game, rather than a chance event in a specific game.

He looks good to be fair. Not looking good for Saka though, he might end up riding the bench behind him

He literally didn’t?

Just rewatch his all touches compilation from the game, he was pretty much pocketed and passed to Everton players a couple of times with the limited amount of time he had on the ball.

Without that moment of madness from T-Rex this thread would be laughing at him.

Wrong thread, was meant to post it in the Dowman one.

We won the Champions League with Torres. We won the title with Kezman. Nobody views those players as anything other than awful transfers. Gyokeres has a bit better stats than those two but his performances in general have fluctuated between utterly abject and just ok for almost the entire season.

Yeah but it won’t really matter; Arsenal will be on cloud 9. Once the euphoria dies down, they’ll just move him accordingly.

I think we're already seeing the plan in action. Havertz started the last game and I expect him to be first choice whenever fully fit. Gyokeres will become a decent (though overpriced) rotation option.

A lot of fans, myself included, expected this to be the case when we bought him. Unfortunately, Havertz pick up an injury that ruled him out for six months.
