wowowowowInteresting, so Amorim doesn't want players that want to play at the highest level
Anyways Gyokeres isn't very good so not stressed about missing out on him

This is a very poor understanding of probability and should be ignored.

Odd. I watched the presser and didn’t hear him say this. He basically responded to the question about Gyokeres by talking about how he wants to help Hojlund improve.
It sounds like Romano has disingenuously merged the answers of two separate questions to create a misleading headline.
"That's why leagues should be ignored and all the focus should be on individual player qualities"Nowhere were probabilities mentioned.
"That's why leagues should be ignored and all the focus should be on individual player qualities"
This directly contradicts the incredibly impressive work done by analytics in using player performance in a particular league as being predictive of how they'll perform in other leagues, which is so far very accurate.
Just because probabilities wasn't directly mentioned doesn't mean the post isn't displaying a very poor understanding of it.
Well, I wanna see the reaction of all those who question Gyokeres when he starts banging goals for Arsenal...
Well if he didn't want to come here then will just get behind whoever Ruben decides to sign instead of himWell, I wanna see the reaction of all those who question Gyokeres when he starts banging goals for Arsenal...

I’m pretty sure 90% of people would prefer Gyokeres over Delap, but if he doesn’t want to join then we can’t force him. I’m sure he will do well for Arsenal if he joins them, and he would make them an instant contender if he carries on his form. Which would be shit of course.
You can't say the manager refusing to sign players not fully committed to the club and/or his vision a strange take and then say Arsenal and/or Liverpool are a better destination from the player's perspective.Strange take, any footballer with ambition to play at the top level would want to play in the UCL. From Gyökeres perspective he should choose a better team like Arsenal or Liverpool as he's entering his prime. Right now Manchester United is far from the ideal destiny for the very best players and I don't think winning the Europa League will change drastically how attractive the club is perceived.
How's it a strange take? He's saying he wants a player that wants to play for united specifically, not just one that wants to play CL.Strange take, any footballer with ambition to play at the top level would want to play in the UCL. Also, one that won’t throw his toys out the pram should we fail to qualify at the end of next season - which is a distinct possibility, let’s be real. How's it a strange take? He's saying he wants a player that wants to play for united specifically, not just one that wants to play CL.
Yep, good point. It's going to take a little while to right this ship and we don't want another Di Maria situation. Also, one that won’t throw his toys out the pram should we fail to qualify at the end of next season - which is a distinct possibility, let’s be real.
Hope not, they have more points than we do!With Cunha, we really don't have such constraints since Wolves are going down and he seems pretty vocal that he wants to move to United.
I was just writing because of the doubters here who have never heard of late bloomers.I’m pretty sure 90% of people would prefer Gyokeres over Delap, but if he doesn’t want to join then we can’t force him. I think it’s correct to be sceptical of a player putting those numbers up in the Portuguese league, however he has also been a success in the championship. Any player that can do it in that league can probably handle the PL. I doubt he flops, he just won’t deliver 50 goals like he is now.
It’s pretty clear how this goes;
option a) we sign him and he is immediately shite and a waste of money.
option 2) we get gazumped and he goes on to win the Ballon d’Or.
So fecking true! He's not playing in a high quality league though. Three years ago Darwin Nunez was the top scorer in that league, but if you look at the actual goals he scored then you can see why he failed to replicate those numbers in England. Some of the goalkeepers in that league make Onana look like a world beater!
The Premier League is arguably the strongest it's ever been now compared to other European leagues. Teams like Brighton, Bournemouth, Wolves and West Ham are far far stronger than their Portuguese equivalents.
Gyokeres is 27 in June and is yet to score a single goal in one of Europe's top leagues. The idea that he's a sure thing just isn't true at all.
Nunez failings aren't really down to the league or goalkeepers though, he finds himself in space all the time and gets on the end of tons of chances but just cannot finish.
That season is an outlier. Plenty of players have the odd great scoring season. But you say he cannot finish but he did in Portugal... in 28 games scored 26 league goals and 8 in the CL.
So its clear evidence that scoring in the Portugese league is not a sure thing that the player will score in the PL.
I was really bummed out when Torres moved to Liverpool a few years ago,

When I read the comments of our fans it seems like we find flaws for every striker that is being linked to our club. For example some of the arguments are Osimhen and Gyokeres are playing in weaker leagues, Osimhen only once scored over 15 league goals, Osimhen and Gyokeres don't fit the INEOS transfer policy because of their age, both of them are too expensive for INEOS, we don't need Delap because we already have two young strikers like Hojlund and Zirkzee, Delap isn't good enough for Manchester United etc.
Realistically is there a striker on the market that ticks all the boxes?
Some of the criteriums for our new striker according to all those arguments are:
- not too young but also not too old so he would fit the INEOS transfer policy
- would have an instant impact and start goals consistently since we are desperate for that type of striker
- would want to come to a club that potentially wouldn't play any european competitions next season
- would reject our other competitors that would also want to buy that striker to join us, in circumstances where probably most of those competitors are in a better situation than we are
- wouldn't have a high transfer fee because INEOS doesn't want to splash 70-80 millions pounds on a striker
- wouldn't demand wages that are too high due to our wage structure
The answer is no, there isn't a striker like that on the market. There isn't a perfect option on the market, we have to make piece with that. Whichever striker we sign in the summer, we have to make some kind of gamble with him and hope it turns out great for us.
I never said they did. Even if he has a 50% drop off, he’d still be the best striker at the club since Van PersieDo you actually believe people wanting him here really believe he would score 50 goals in the PL?
The poster opinion is absurd, according to him we should have avoided signing Bruno our best player in the past 5 years who by the way doubled his numbers in the PL.
Would've loved to have Torres here.I was really bummed out when Torres moved to Liverpool a few years ago, especially considering how well he performed there in his 1st season especially. I’d feel a similar way if Gyökeres joined Arsenal, since his current form is fecking rocket and if he could maintain it, will definitely significantly strengthen their attack.

Let’s ignore the fact I plucked the 50% drop off figure from my arse and just look at the numbers then. He’s got 52 goals this season. Let’s assume with the form he’s in, and games left to play that he ends on 56 for the season. Half that and he’s on 28 - a figure only matched by Zlatan in a season he also took penalties for us. He’d be up there.Incorrect.
Gyokeres has 38 league goals this season. So if he comes to United... he wont be taking pens as Bruno takes them, so take his 12 pen goals out this season... 26 goals and 50% that and its 13 league goals.
Not really the best ST since Van Persie is it?

I’m not going to argue numbers translate directly from the Portuguese league to the Prem. I’m still sceptical. But it’s not a shit league, and as I say even if he weighs in half his numbers were still looking at our best forward in a decade.
Rashford wasn’t playing as a striker though was he.When was the last time we got 19 penalties in a season? Because thats how many Gyokeres has scored in all comps this season.
Also... Rashford for 30 goals a couple seasons ago... so it’s not like he would be best since RVP then?

I think you’re overanalysing what was supposed to be a throwaway remark. My underlying point was that you can’t directly translate the numbers from the Portuguese league to the PL, however even if the drop off is so great that he lost 50% of those goals, he’d still be our best striker in a decade. Debate amongst yourselves whether or not you prefer Ibrahimović, Lukaku or whoever. My point was it’s still a risk worth taking.
