Viktor Gyökeres

My only concern with Gyokeres is aerial ability. Which has been a weakness of ours for a long time now.
His heading is awful, we need to get him in drills to improve on this, Osimhen is the better all round player and would probably get you 17-22 PL goals, Gykores will score goals but he’ll also have quiet games, if he gets 15 PL goals he’s done well, plus he’ll want to take penalties and Bruno not giving them up!

Here’s the thing if the team are wining more games more easily then players like Bruno step up even as an 8 he’ll get double figures in a team that’s in the top 5 of the PL, not the bottom 5 of the PL.

If he’s only got 6 goals next season we are in for another truly awful season. He got 19 goals and 19 assists this season from 57 games played and he played a third of those matches in a dysfunctional team as 6/8 Hybrid.
We will see, if we are purchasing Gyokeres, Mbeumo and Cunha then we are not going to be dependant on his output so it should be more than mitigated.

I think Bruno knows this too, he’s the captain and will have had endless discussions with Amorim about the plans going forward and even more so as his own future was uncertain. He knows we are loading firepower ahead of him and he knows his role is going to be different.

I also think despite his penalty record with us, he will give them to Gyokeres if he signs because his record is also very good and it’s a real benefit to have your number 9 competitive in the goalscoring charts and getting confidence from consistent scoring.

I’m sure there are other strikers that came into their peak at his age and then joined a top league for the first time, and went on to succeed?

Jamie Vardy? Didier Drogba?
But they are the exception rather than the rule.

It is the silly season of the summer transfer window. We all get giddy at the prospect and hope that that brings. Hell, I was salivating at seeing Hojlund lead the line for us........that didn't last long.

I don't think we will be in for Osimhen personally. He's a good player, but I can't see Amorim risking his #9 selection on a player he doesn't know, and who seems to have a bit drama that follows him around. Especially when there's a comparably effective player who he does know, has worked with and trusts to do a job for him.
I hope the directors work with recruitment team more on this matter instead of taking too much input from Amorim. Giving Amorim signings and pre season is as far as we can afford. We can’t just put all eggs into this basket in an event that Amorim would fail. Thus leaving us with his system players.

For the health of his brain, I'm actually glad he's managed to grow into a goal machine without a significant number of them coming from headers.

Except Romano and the Athletic?

No Idea why Romano gets so much attention. He was saying that we were deciding whether to sign Cody Gakpo in January or the summer, then a few hours later he'd signed for Liverpool! He is a total chancer!

Yep. He's always been clueless on our transfers.

Weird thing to choose to use against him - since he was absolutely right.

"Speaking to the Mirror, Gakpo revealed that he had in fact come close to joining not just United, but also Leeds United, in the summer transfer window."

"I thought I was going to Manchester United, but in the end it didn’t work out."

So we obviously were very close to signing him.

There is a video of Gakpo backing this up too.

That was the summer before. In the winter we went for Weghorst after blowing all the money on Antony in the summer instead.

He claims to be this top ITK, yet on the day Gakpo joined Liverpool he wrote,

Cody Gakpo hasn’t changed his mind on Manchester United. He was keen on joining last summer and this is still the case, discussions with his agents have always been positive.

So he was clearly just guessing as Gakpo would have already agreed terms with Liverpool at that point.

This is my point. Anybody could do what he does. He just jumps on speculation and rumours as do most of the twitter accounts.

Compare this to somebody like David Ornstein who rarely puts out stories and only does it if he's got concrete information from the club involved. He's the gold standard, whereas Romano is just another clickbait merchant.

Gakpo was Ten Hag's target right? His player taste was awful.

In short; no. People are willing the Osimhen transfer into existence, but to me it seems clear no top clubs are going anywhere near him, and that doesn't look likely to suddenly change.
Absolutely no chance it happens but would you take him on a free next summer IF he ran down contract

Weghorst? He scored 10 goals in the Dutch league last year. He is a very average player.
I can’t understand why people are ignoring g the stats around Gyorkeres, most of our players from Portugal or via the Portuguese league or via sporting have been great.
PSG is an example how to exploit Portuguese league, Mendes, Vitinha and Joao Neves all great players (Ramos will never have an opportunity to play full games since they have better strikers), the problem with United? Always buy expensive players who played in a "proven" league.

Amorim has veto power over any transfer so ultimately it’s up to him, which is the way it should be since it’s his system and coaching all new signings would have to play in, and ultimately it’s the head coach’s job that would be on the line next year if results don’t improve.

Have they only raised there asking price because it’s only us who wants him

I’d take Osimhen in a heartbeat over Gykores he’s a beast and he’ll dominate pL defenders in the air and on the ground.

Jacobs basically telling us to sit tight on Goldbridge's channel as this one will likely run well into July as the club are in 'no rush' and will focus on outgoings after Mbuemo before going in for a no.9

Nobody cares about Jacobs or Goldbridge.

Was listening to United View this morning and Flex got the Victor’s mixed up in his intro. Was saying Osimhen instead of Gyokeres a few times, had me laughing on my walk.

As long as we don't accidentally bring Victor Lindelof back in.

Mark Ogden echoing the stories in The Athletic re. United and Gyokores - the player is admired by United and Amorim and they are keeping an eye on his availability, but not actively pursuing him at this time (because we obviously could not afford him without some sales first).

If we're successful in shifting the likes of Rashford/Antony/Garnacho/Sancho for decent fees and we find that Gyokeres is still available later in the window, it sounds like we might make a move for him, though.

So, we prioritized not one but two no 10s over striker.
I do like Cunha and Mbuemo signings but blimey, it should have been striker and then everything else.

I reckon its simply to have him and mbeumo in July for the new accounting year

Hadn't thought of that before. You're probably right. In either case, the window is closed for the next week, so one would think a lot of direct negotiations will happen in the last two weeks of June.

I would also have preferred that the club prioritise a striker (and a goalkeeper and a midfielder) ahead of a second #10 - I suppose if the deal for Delap had come off, United would have their new #9, nice and early in the window, and might not have been actively pursuing Mbeumo at this stage (that would probably have seen Mbeumo join Newcastle, though). Getting Delap would also have ruled out any move for Gyokeres later in the window, something which appears still to be open, if we can make the requisite sales. Those desperate for Gyokeres to join are probably camped out in the wrong thread, though - there won't be any news regarding Gyokeres and United until we first have had news of sales being close/agreed for (probably at least three of) Rashford/Antony/Garnacho/Sancho.

I take your point but the club obviously feel that we did not do enough to feed our forward players last season and so simply signing a new striker would not have addressed the most glaring issue. This is not to try and relitigate the argument over whether Hojlund/Zirkzee were the issue or was it the service to them as both things can be true and the evidence of our own eyes would confirm our forward play was dire but we also were terrible at supplying them.

I actually think the plan was to address both straight away, hence the Cunha and Delap deals. The issue is that Delap rejected us and so we have pivoted to Mbuemo because of the opportunity and also his versatility. Mbuemo wants to join and is in our price range and does have the versatility to play as a right sided 10 or could play as the number 9 more effectively than anyone we currently have on the books. The news the other day of Sporting going back on their gentlemans agreement with Gyokeres to let him move cheaply probably influenced our thinking also.

I do think we want a striker but we are being smart by not showing our hand and refusing to overpay. We won't address every single need in one window so it is better to sign players we are 100% certain of than force something just for the sake of filling a role.
