Villarreal Club de Fútbol, S.A.D., usually abbreviated to Villarreal CF or just Villarreal, and nicknamed El Submarí Groguet or El Submarino Amarillo (The Yellow Submarine), is a Spanish professional football club based in Villarreal that plays in La Liga. Villarreal was founded as Club Deportivo Villarreal on 10 March 1923 to promote all sports (and especially Football). The stadium was rented for 60 pesetas a month and ticket prices were set at half a peseta for men and a quarter of a peseta for children. Women were granted free admission. On 21 October of that year, Villarreal played their first game ever, against CD Castellón, a modern rival of the club.

Villarreal entered regional competitions within the Spanish football pyramid from 1929 to 1930 onwards. The 1934–35 season saw the team lose to Cartagena when a win would have seen them promoted to the nationwide Second Division. The following season saw Villarreal win the First Division of the region before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. When the war finished in 1939, the club played again in the Second Division of the region. However, CD Villarreal was dissolved in the early 1940s, and in 1942, CA Foghetecaz, an acronym for the club's founders (Font, Gil, Herrero, Teuler, Catalá and Zaragoza), was one of several clubs established in its place. In 1946, the new club joined the Valencian Football Federation and renamed itself as CAF Villarreal, where the F stood for Foghetecaz. The name changed again to the current Villarreal CF in 1954, with a badge similar to the present one.

The club has spent much of its history in the lower divisions of Spanish football, and only made their La Liga debut in 1998. In the 21st century, Villarreal gained some league stability following the rise to prominence of Juan Román Riquelme, Marcos Senna, Juan Pablo Sorín and Diego Forlán (the only Villarreal player to win the Pichichi and European Golden Shoe titles) under Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini. The club made its first appearance in the UEFA Champions League in 2005 and reached the semi-finals of the competition. The club achieved its best league finish in the 2007/08 campaign, runners-up behind leaders Real Madrid, and made further UEFA Champions League appearances while also appearing in the UEFA Cup and boasting the talents of Bruno Soriano, Diego Godín, Santi Cazorla, Joan Capdevila, Giuseppe Rossi and Joseba Llorente; but sustained relegation in 2012, before quickly rebounding, becoming a stable top division club and and going on to achieve three top-six finishes under Marcelino García Toral. By 2021, under the leadership of Unai Emery, the team reached their first Europa League final.

Villarreal has supported a long rivalry with CD Castellón for geographical reasons, since both are from the province of Castellón; this clash is called the Derbi de La Plana. They also rival Valencia, since the two had been the most competitive teams of the Valencian Community; this clash is called the Derbi de la Comunitat. Villarreal's mascot is called Groguet (coming from the word ‘groc’ which means yellow in Valencian). They play their home games at the Estadio de la Cerámica, formerly and informally called El Madrigal, and originally called Campo de Villarreal.

If we sack Ole this weekend we can still qualify from the group and save the season.

If Ole is in for Villarreal we'll lose and head back down to the Europa League again.

Their manager is about 20 times better than ours. An astute, flexible guy who was treated terribly at arsenal and would have United up near top

Play Donny, drop McT and Matic, play Telles and put Shaw on bench if he’s allowed to play at all. Hope to god Varane is fit and drop Maguire.

But then the glazers will still dream of somehow getting the champions league money through that 2nd rate European competition because we sure as hell wont get their precious top 4 spot at this rate

Imagine the mood on the plane over to Spain if Ole is still manager? Regardless this is certain defeat away to a team that will be seeking revenge for that game in Old Trafford they shouldnt have lost.

Providing Ole’s sacked before …then think Utd will win this.

Can`t see anything different happen in this game. Villareal will dominate possession and create a handful of good chances, we will have the odd chance on the counter. Just hoping they have a mare in front of goal and maybe we can sneek a draw.

    Dangerous game.

Could be a scenario where we win the Young Boys game and still don't qualify.

I hate that this match is early evening. At least I can just go to bed after an 8pm kick-off.

I can’t believe we are actually still in it. It’s the one shining light left in the season by the end of November. Christ. Groundhog Day. Wonder who gets the gig? Prb Fletcher until someone is found. Grim enough! If he gets a few results it’ll be the same old story. The owners don’t want anyone who’ll pressurise them or try to aggressively raise standards. We are going to get spanked as soon as we come up against a proper team if we make it out.

We are not winning anything until the new manager. Any non-loss is a miracle, from now on. The club is in absolute disarray, unfortunately

I'd drop Maguire if I could, but he may as well play given he'll be out of the weekend game.
If Greenwood or Cavani were fit, I'd start them ahead of Rashford.

If Ole's still in charge were better off forfeiting and taking the 0-3 (or 0-5?)

    Rashford Ronnie Sancho
    Fred Bruno VDB
    Telles Lindelof Bailly AWB
    DDG

If Matic can play 45 min I'd start him.

Shaw and Maguire need to be dropped.

I'd switch martial for rashford because Rashford does not look. I would prefer matic over fred but he can't play more than 60 mins a week. Dalot fro AWB too, time to freshen the squad, or bring Laird back.

    Fletcher's first big test.
I believe, Fletcher's first big test was summer transfer video, where he had responsibility to define United's playing philosophy and guide recruitment accordingly. Considering that we ended up with too many attackers, players all over the field who we have no idea what to do with, and never recruited anybody as DM, the position most needed, we can say he failed his first big test completely and miserably.

As for, Fletcher as coach/manager, the person whose entire managerial experience is 6mo as under-16 coach, and 6mo as first-team coach, having him even as interim is a disastrous solution.

Was defining a playing philosophy really his task?
