The club has one, hence waiting till summer to spend the money. A loan without obligation to buy gets us over a short term hump.

The guy is captain of cameroon and scored and played in WC. Dont be so myopic.

Only way of adding 2 players is sorting out loan deals for this guy/Depay and Felix. There is no way that Atletico will let Morata leave or AC Milan with Giroud either.
Yeah, 100%, if the Glazers for the first time in 17 years starts caring about the teams and the fans, I see no other way.

Like it’s what, 90% probability that there is nothing to this rumor. But the writing has been on the wall forever that we might have to look at guys that aren’t just cheap, but that more or less would come for free. What type of player can you get for free? It’s the players that a team must get rid of.

Ok this is so funny if true. But lets hope he could do a decent job for us as backup.

Hope he scores 12 goals for us so we can call it a Aboubakar's dozen

How you can be UTD fan and then tell your self that Aboubakar is good enough?
And we would have money if we are not run by morons. Baily, Telles, Henderson could at least fetch 35 m. But it is easier to loan them.

Do you have any idea of how incompetent our owners and Ed Woodward have been? You mention Bailly. We resigned Bailly to a long expensive contract 1.5 years ago…

The siblings… I mean their dad was at least a business man. The siblings aren’t even that. Woodward was absolutely horrible at his job, they kept him on for ages.

Like of course he wouldn’t be good enough. But nothing we have done have been good enough the last 17 years. Not even remotely.

People are so desperate for a striker that they are trying to manifest this guy to being good even though he's clearly nowhere near the standard. His first touch makes Lukaku look like Berbatov. We actually need someone who can contribute this season not make up the numbers. We're in a good position for champions league qualification right now and if we lose out we can count it as another year wasted - without champions league qualification we will struggle once again to attract the Frenkie De Jong calibre of players.

These threads are becoming more frequent on here. One rumour leads to a load of people convincing themselves and often others that the bang average option being suggested is not just a better-than-nothing option but also, actually, a good idea. If we accept that the best loan available to us is someone like Joao Felix, then there are obviously going to be numerous more suitable options between he and Aboubakar.

Genuinely baffling how negative people are anytiime we sign a back up option. Ighalo did absolutely fine and ate up minutes while playing passably prior to COVID which is literally all we needed from him. Everyone absolutely freaked out when we signed Cavani and his first season he was inarguably a net contributor to our side, and only had a poor second season largely because we brought in Ronaldo and he was injured.

There is literally no risk with a short term loan. If he sucks, then he doesn't have to play and we are out a few million in wages and that's it.

Say we sign Thuram or some other maybe slightly better player and then have to give them a 4 year contract. What happens when in 18 months we realize they are not good enough and then we just have to go and sign another replacement while being unable to offload them because they will be on to big of wages?

Yeah there are but trouble is their clubs aren't willing to let them leave such as Giroud at AC or Morata at Atletico. Depay would come if we are willing to pay something

Before the WC I hadn’t seen him for a few years, but if he’s the same Aboubakar that was at Porto and previously some French Club (Lille I think), I used to think he was decent. He looked good in the CL for Porto anyway.

Quite a lot

1) people said the same thing about Ighalo, and Cavani, and Ronaldo… this club needs a long term strategy. Short term fixes are not the answer. I’d rather play Garnacho through the middle and develop a new area of his game. Or have a punt on one of the u21s

2) he’s absolutely nowhere near good enough for the premier league, let alone Man Utd

No not “this”

it is a terrible idea and you’ve made me ashamed by agreeing with it
People slated Ighalo and Cavani when they were successful signings for what they were. No one with any sense thought they were brought in to lead our line for 4 years. Ighalo got off to a solid start prior to the Covid lockdown when we were desperate for a backup striker (like we are now) and did a decent job at just that. Cavani was even better - obviously on high wages too - and was so successful that we signed him for a second season which was a disaster for separate reasons. There is absolutely nothing wrong with signing a makeshift option that you can easily offload. I would much rather that than sign some 26 year old to a 4-5 year deal who we know will never be good enough for us but will take up a place in the squad on big wages for that whole time.

We obviously don't have the money to sign a top class striker in this window not that any would even be available, so why not go with a short term low risk option? Literally the biggest downside is they flop and we are out a few million in wages and we move on in 6 months time.

Both were a huge waste of money. Probably the best part of £40m all in for very little return.

As if this thread is still going. Desperate.

Cavani was a waste his second season as was Ighalo for the time he was here in the second season, but that is because we signed replacements for them and didn't then offload each of them when we should have.

Ighalo scored 5 and assisted 1 just over 500 minutes in his first half season with us. That is far from a bad signing given what his role was.

Cavani had 17 goals and 6 assists in just over 2000 minutes. Again, not sure how that could be deemed a failed signing. if you had any suggestions of players that can be signed (and available from their clubs) for cheaper including transfer fee and wages and contribute that over a two year span, then I would love to hear those suggestions.

It is really easy to say "they aren't good enough" or "we should just sign someone better", but the reality is that the striker market is very poor overall and anyone half decent is going to cost more than 50 million pounds.

You didn't need to say any more than the first sentence where you agreed with me. £40m over two years could have been spent far better.

Because United always go for the “short term option” - it never works. It doesn’t allow teammates to connect and it shows desperation.

If United go for the “short term option” like they always do it won’t be with a view to getting a long term option later. It never ends that way. It’ll just be another short term option again, and then another

Time for that long term option to replace Lukaku, who left about 6 years ago and still hasn’t been replaced

There is a risk though. There is a very real risk that Martial gets injured and we're stuck with Ali Dia as our main striker for the remainder of the season and as a result fall out of the Champions league spots furthering our modern day irrelevance in the game and losing out on something that would make us a very attractive proposition for elite players and so we end up having to overpay for our talent.

So you are prepared to wait it out then because we won't get that quality of player now

I will criticize them if we decide to sign him to a second season instead of getting the right long term option. But you keep saying there were better ways to spend that money without actually saying how. 40 million gets you a bottom level premier league striker nowadays if you are lucky.

We always go for the short term option? Do we really? The vast majority of our signings our longer term (3+ years), and our most recent short term ones in Casemiro and Eriksen have been two of our most successful. The club obviosly does not have 100+ million right now to spend on a striker and there isn't one of that quality even available especially in January. So the question you need to ask is: sign a cheap short term option on loan, spend 20-40 million on a mediocre striker who we will need to sign to a 4+ year contract, or sit still and sign no one. Which of those options is best in your opinion, because we aren't signing a 24 year old Robert Lewandowski or Harry Kane in January.
