Vinicius | signs a new contract with Madrid

Not sure where we go from here, Diomande gone, Yildiz not for sale and the Barcola fee is ridiculous. Genuinely think we might end up with Rashford....
Reckon Rashford or Pedro Neto tbh.

Can't see you get Alvarez either, if he leaves Atletico it will be to go to Barca.

Increasingly obvious that it was all a new contract ploy. I doubt he had even heard of Arsenal two years ago, let alone entertain thoughts of playing for them

The Vini links were nice to see but we seemingly do not have a plan B. Our attack, in my opinion, is currently slightly worse than last year.

Possible positives....Dowman can probably play a few games, and hopefully Ode and Saka regain some form. I was particularly encouraged by Odegaard at the WC. Otherwise there isnt much to report on, Tzollis and Guimaraes are unlikely to upgrade our attack significantly at least not without a change in our mentality. At the moment I dont even see a Trossard replacement in sight, and our attack was pretty dire by the end of the season.

With Saliba out for a while, some of that defensive solidity is gone for a bit. We desperately need a decent signing, and no not another defensive one.

I forgot Trossard had left, he scored some important goals for you last season.

There's a number of reasons the attack could be better than last season, the main 1 being
  • playing without the fear / anxiety that gripped us especially the 2nd part of the season.
There is also the hope that
  • Havertz is fitter for the full season, and although he has faults, he does make the attack more fluid
  • Bruno G adds a bit more creativity to the midfield
  • Having more options in the midfield keeps the midfield fresher
  • Odegaard & Saka improve on their form and fitness from last season
  • Guys like Gyokeres & Eze are more settled and used to the team
  • Dowman makes more appearances adding a bit of wildcard in there
However, i do appreciate this is me hoping, rather than saying with any certainty, and i also appreciate i usually see things through a bit more of a positive lens that yourself & a couple of others in here.

I do think we need genuine quality to really take us to the next level, there's just no getting away from that.

And there are people fuming in this very thread because apparently us not wanting to get involved in this circus shows lack of ambition…

Like yeah can we drop all work on deals for positions we actually need to urgently fill, just to waste some time and resources inventing a contract offer for Vini, to arbitrarily ‘show ambition’? No thanks.

I still kinda hope we make a last ditch attempt to sign Williams. Probably the only realistic and best option left.

The first real question mark is with Arteta. If he is going to open things up a little, make that ball move a lot faster through the lanes and actually use the center of the pitch in the opponents final third, I will feel more comfortable already with what we have. I dont think Guimaraes is going to help if we play the same way we have as of late. This overreliance of ticking it down the wings needs to be decapitated. If that happens, I can see a Guimaraes and Odegaard being much more useful, and we probably wont notice the significant hole we have on the left as much.

Arteta is a good manager, no argument....but he wants us to play like Spain did at the WC with even less risk tolerance and without all the pieces in attack. He needs to develop a better balance. Love the trophy last year, but I also want to be entertained and not hope to hold out every game. And I dont think that approach will work if another contender generates some consistency this season.

This was it from day 1 very clearly, nothing else. Vini got what he wanted, and I think Arsenal also got what they wanted as well, distraction from just losing out on Morgon Rogers to Chelsea (see Arsenal fans completely forgot about this).

Not sure we lost much there. 117 mil for Rogers is crazy. Might as well throw it on Barcola who id also massively overpriced.

Can't believe he's turned down the opportunity to listen to North London forever every week.

Not sure if Arsenal was the best destination for Vini, but idea of him moving on from Real was probably the right move. I still wont be surprised he doesnt sign anything. Life at Real under Mourinho is unlikely to be a whole lot better than under Alonso. Not sure how Mourinho is going to handle this. He is kinda a rigid manager in the first place.

Mourinho is probably the worst manager for Vini and his career. But Real unfortunately still has a mythic appeal and they are rhe richest clun on the planet by a margin. I dont think there is any other signing Arteta could make that would be such a good fit either. But we never make marquee signings so I'll just have to be happy with Bruno G, which is a strong signing if not the most exciting.

He'll outlast Mourinho.

Didn’t expect that even non Arsenal fans believed this, especially United fans who have seen this tactic used on us countless times in the past. Was never a goer.

Vini to PSG
Kvara to Arsenal
Barcola to Liverpool
Rodri to Barca
Diomonde to Real
Rashford to United

you heard here first

Does he fully recover from his groin injury? Is his injury chronic? He will be a good addition as he can create chaos one on one to unlock the defense. I remember he turned down the chance to join Barca before.

A lot of people will mock, but credit to Arsenal for being ambitious and trying to get one of the world best players.
I think both over the top credit or criticism is a bit odd. A world-class player was in a contract standoff and we threw our hat in the ring knowing it was a long shot. It's all pretty rational.

I agree. He apparently has a £77m release clause. I particularly like the fact he backs himself going past the defender on the inside and outside and is comfortable on his left foot.

so you know Williams snubbed Barca to stay at Athletic and was being paid a very high salary. Not sure Arsenal has more pull or can pay more than Athletic.

Definitely. The transfer would have an absolutely massive impact on their club and the league. When you're at the top, the sort of transfer you want your club to go for.

I’d never claim “more pull” than Barca. But seeing as our revenue is 6 or 7 times larger than Athletic, yeah, I think we could probably put together a financial package that works for him.

He has always shown a deeper affection for Athletic, and there were some contract issues with Barca other than pure wages. I think he does have a release clause so the transfer fee should be ok. The recurring groin injuries are a concern. He would maybe have to have a lighter workload.

How the mighty have fallen. It used to be Utd who would get used for these contract ploys....

So it's turning out how 99% of us expected it to, ah well.

The interesting thing about this though is a lot of Madrid fans appear pretty unhappy about it, especially when linked to potentially losing out on Rodri. Mind you this is twitter I'm talking about and every fan of every team just moans about everything on there.

To lose out on Rodri to accommodate Vinicius doesnt seem like a good idea. Tchou and Valverde hasn't been good enough. Rodri in my opinion brings them over the line and wins them trophies.

I think keeping Vini made sense. Keeping Vini AND buying Diomande for €140m and missing out on Rodri is a bit of a head-scratcher, though.

They could easily have bought both and kept Vinicius. I find it so strange, especially letting him go to Barcelona.
