Is it worth getting into? I'm sure there'll come a point when it's worth the investment, but I have no idea if we're there yet.

Was considering getting a VR headset but other than for half life alyx, i didn’t find any titles that were appealing. Cost of entry is still too high with the oculus quest at £400 + good spec pc

I would suggest waiting a few years as technology improves, prices come down a bit and gives time for a few more potential full length games to come out.

It’s nearly there but not quite. I treated myself to a PSVR a couple of Christmas’s ago out of my Christmas bonus. I’m glad I’ve got it but I can’t say I’ve had my money’s worth.

The tech is impressive, especially if you’re my age (45) and can remember the early VR attempts in the 90’s and I have no doubt that VR is 100% the future of gaming. Just not there yet and it’s largely down to controls and movement especially.

That being said there are some fantastic titles out there. My favourite being SuperHot VR, such a cool game and hides movement issues really well.

Resi 7 is also amazing technically and is really scary, I mean really scary! So much so, I reverted to playing it like a normal game after a while

Skyrim VR is ok, it’s nice to be in the world but graphically not as nice as you’re used to and the controls are awkward.

Walking Dead game is good and Beat Sabre is cool too.

There’s a few tech demos I’ve enjoyed, especially the Apollo moon landing thing.

I would like to play Half Life Alyx though, sadly it’s not on PSVR though.

If you’ve got the money to throw on something not essential then they’re brill but largely they’re just impressive tech to show off to your mates.

Bought PSVR nearly a couple of years ago now. Was an amazing experience, and highly recommend it, but in the end it just become far too much effort compared to just playing a regular game.

Got both PSVR and Oculus Rift S

PSVR does a decent job of a starter package but the resolution, frame rate and the lack of full spatial tracking makes it very much an entry option. The games are pretty low res and blurry although Resident Evil 7 is absolutely incredibly in VR actually incredibly scary to play in VR and brings a whole new dynamic to the horror genre, VR is made for horror games.

Played a few others in VR i think i tried Skyrim but only lasted 30 mins or so as it looks absolutely terrible its a blurry mess on PSVR and no real effort has been made to incorporate the VR Control schemes.

Oculus Rift S i bought specifically so i could experience Half Life Alyx, this is possibly the greatest game i have ever played the initial wow factor and the ease of control with the gravity gloves is so natural its something else. From having to reload your gun (like an actual gun ejecting the mag pulling a new one out of your backpack) simple stuff like this when under pressure in a fire fight is incredible.

Actually having to physically duck and peak out of cover is insane (once you get over the fact you look like an idiot to anyone outside the game) the 3d puzzle solving by interacting and moving objects in the game its incredible. When done right there is really nothing close to VR its incredible but valve have the only ones that have nailed it so far.

That's probably what I'm going to do...

...except posts like this keep getting me excited.

But as good as Alyx might be, I'm not sure if the extra cost and effort is enough to justify for a single game. By the time the next tripe-A title comes out, any hardware I've bought would likely be out of date.

Are Sony and MS still developing for their VR systems or have they given up on it? If those two can't make it work, it's probably dead in the water.

The issue with VR is the lack of VR games from top studios. I have a psvr and rift S and they are amazing with the right games. Resi7, Arizona Sunshine, The Walking Dead etc.. are amazing but there are so few class games its hard to call. As it stands now I think the PSVR is not worth it right now with the ps5 and likely a psvr 2 coming.

The Rift S is a good piece of kit and Asgards Wrath is exactly what VR should be capable of, problem is you need a really high end computer for it and it won't work well on your standard gaming pc set up. That said games like Creed Rise to Glory etc.. are lots of fun. Its worth a punt IF you'll get the use out of it. If its the kind of thing you'll use once every month or two, I'd say skip unless you are loaded.

Basically I'd say the highs of VR are higher than anything you can experience without, but those highs are far too few.

VR ain't all that at the minute tbh, novelty of it wears of quickly and for the price you pay it leaves a lot wanting.

Not really a VR thing, but it all pales in comparison to when I first held a gun on playstation going through time crisis. That's the sort of feels I expected.

Edit: then again I was 7 years old ha

I don't think VR will ever be "future of gaming" per se, it will always be a side thing in gaming and not replacing the classic one. For example, with classic gaming you can relax and game for hours and hours, but with VR, there is no relaxing as such, people saying how they have to take breaks after 1 hour sessions etc.

There is too much "effort" required for VR to just replace classic gaming. They will just coexist and that is fine.

With the speed tech is advancing do you really think we’ll be sat holding a joypad in 20 years time? Feck no.

look how far we’ve come in the last 20 years.

We won’t be watching games on a flat tv, we’ll be in them, looking around and interacting fully. Sure, there’s always going to be relaxing games but VR will be the main event.

Of course technology will advance, but also people expect too much, I don't doubt we can invent really advanced stuff but human body can only follow and do so much.

I purchased the Oculus Quest just before lockdown. The inital wow factor is something else! You are just fascinated for days on end in the whole dynamics and realism of the whole experience.

The Eleven table tennis game is so real I often forget its not a real table.

I can't wait for the day where you can watch a live football game in VR!

I really want to get a Valve Index, which comes with Half-Life: Alyx for free. That game is exceptional and is the first legitimately good VR game. Might also purchase Boneworks which is a really good VR tech demo that got turned into a game.

Problem is I need to upgrade my PC, specifically I need a GPU that can do VR but I’m torn since my current PC is coming up to 4 years old and whether to get a new PC altogether.

I've been in vr for the last 4 years. Get an oculus quest. 400 quid no wires, full room scale vr, good lenses and the ability to connect to a high end pc. The quest also has an extremely active community making some extremely exciting games and experiences some of which are on the official store and others which are on a platform called side quest which is a free modded platform.

Also half life alyx is one of the best gaming experiences you can ever have.

I’ve still never tried it.

I considered buying a psvr. But I play games in my sitting room, I have a wife and albeit older kids, but as strange as I feel at times playing games as an older person I just can’t put a silly looking hat on my head and disappear completely. I’m just not sure VR will ever be a thing for me.

Feet up at home.
Love my PSVR.

Got a week off now and time to try some of the games out I've not played much yet like Mage's Tale.

Thought about getting it for the PS4 but the expense and the lack of games outside of the horror genre that would really impact the gaming experience led me to think that it wasn't worth the money. It's definitely the future though.

A re-remake of Resident Evil 1 where you could interact with absolutely everything in the mansion through VR would be amazing.

Got my Oculus Quest 2 arriving tomorrow, can't wait :D

My first VR machine, although my brother has a really powerful PC and has been raving about it for a while now.

I'll start off with Beat Saber, SuperHot, and the star wars game. Doom 3 port also arriving in winter sometime.

Anyone else getting one?

Have the original quest. Used 'Virtual Desktop Streamer' to play Half-Life Alyx, wirelessly. It's the best video game experience I've ever had. Somebody mentioned eleven table tennis, which is also awesome. Arizona Sunshine is a good zombie shooter, too.

Same. Was encouraged by things like Samsung GearVR and Google Cardboard and even though it seems like the newer standalone VR seems a major step up, it still feels we're one or two gens away from true mass adoption level potential. Im not as young and cool as I once was I guess.

Officially the best poker player on RAWK.

Arizona Sunshine is such a charming game all round. I love it even more on PSVR with the gun using the rifles. It amazes me that some games since (like Borderlands 2 for example) managed to not use their perfect control systems for either the moves or the gun.

It's one of those things that if you take the plunge you'll realise more why people love it so much, but it's still not 100% all there so it's not a must have at all cost kind of thing. I love the PSVR and there's a lot of genuinely great games on it, and even the more budget ones amaze you at first, but I still struggle to recommend it to people on the fence.

The only person I know that has a VR headset supposedly uses it mostly for porn. I suspect even that isn't as impressive as some might imagine.

Astrobot on the PlayStation version is meant to be very good? But isn't that the problem? Aside from the tech being niche, the games are divided among so many platforms

Half Life Alyx, nothing comes close although it ruins the majority of VR games as its done so well.

I haven't looked at the quest 2 so not sure if its compatible
