Wayne Rooney's legacy

Rooney was better than Ronaldo, more naturally talented. He was a more complete player, and it's for that reason that Ferguson was able to play him in more tactical positions. Ronaldo wouldn't be capable of playing how Rooney could, Rooney could play where Ronaldo could, his goals tally in the season after Ronaldo left proves that.

Of course Ronaldo has gone on and did what he did, but those first 3 or 4 years at United he was half the player Rooney was.
No white text ? Rooney was a better player than Ronaldo, more talented and more complete. Could do everything Ronaldo did and more? Ronaldo couldn’t do what Rooney did though?

Ronaldo was on another level to Rooney. Sir Alex knew that right from the start and he and all the players know it.

What Rooney struggled to do was be the main reason United won silverware. It was when Ronaldo transformed in 06/07 and became our talisman that we won three leagues and CL. We struggled again to get over the line when Ronaldo left our success waned. Berbatov and Nani played a big part in the league win in 11 and RVP was the talisman in 13. Rooney was always better as a support player but never on Ronaldos level for talent. He was more mature and in a mans body from the age of 16 but he had to boot Ronaldo in the air when he played against him and once Ronaldo matured for that 3 seasons he was twice the player Rooney was.

Apparently the pictures were taken over the weekend and not a few years ago. He looks totally out of it though and his claims he has been set up could be right

It's all fun and games, but if that message Rooney was sent is legit (the girl saying "10k or Coleen will see these") then surely she should be done for blackmail?

The athletes cheating on their spouses are idiots, but wen going out of their way to blackmail them is also a fairly crappy thing to do.

Its hilarious, people find a drunk celebrity, get them into a comprising position, take a load of sexually suggestive pictures, and attempt to blackmail them.

Holup, was this a man or a woman? A man? OK, thats fine. Booo, bad man!

Maybe they have a open relationship.

The initial poster quoted Neymar and Messi and said only those two had Rooneys skill set. I added Ronaldo and questioned how Messi and Neymar were worthy of a mention and Ronaldo wasn’t as he’s still playing today. For me Ronaldo is the most complete attacking player to perhaps ever play the game. Their isn’t an aspect of his forward play that wasn’t elite. Rooney is one of our and the premier leagues greatest. Ronaldo and Messi are in a different category altogether, which I know grates on big Rooney fans. For me he never really was as good as people expected him or thought he was going to be as a teenager. He was never a Pele.
I rate Ronaldo as one of the best ever but to say he is the most complete attacking player is an exaggeration. He is a complete goalscorer but not a complete attacking player. His passing, dribbling and vision have never been elite.

Is it a normal British thing to do, for a guy married with children, well into 30s and not a 18 years old, to hang around with friends, without his wife as wing man, mix with a bunch of girls? As long as there was no orgie, it was alright? As if it was normal to date your team mate's wife, and your brother's wife?

The very fact that you allowed yourself into such situation, after numerous lessons learnt, or still not learning his lesson, don't blame others but yourself.

Come on, this guy was a fantastic player but personality wise he's like an old perv.

First there was the grannies, now he's in hotel rooms like a guy buying himself an escort.

Looks wise his hair is like an old man with a wig.

I'm sorry but even though he was a legend for us... off the field he is an absolute joke and I'd be very surprised if such a character will make a good manager because I doubt he will be respected in the dressing room.

If you honestly don't think this is what a lot of men do when they have a lot of fame and money then you're quite naive.

Every seen Di Caprio? He is known to go out on his yatch with 10+ U25 women.

Rooney's problem is that he obviously has either a drink problem or does not know how to handle his drink. That is how he so often ends up in such situations as he is either passed out or completely battered.

Forget about money and fame. It's what many do. It's only in some countries that people like to act shocked. In Europe and many countries in Asia no one bats an eyelid.

This myth needs to come to an end, did you watch Ronaldo at united? He was one of the best dribblers to have played in this league, it was only when he started to put more emphasis on efficiency that he lost some of that ability.

I don't think there is much mitigation for Rooney.

I think at that age if you haven't learnt enough to know alcohol can induce poor decision making, and then you actively put yourself in a position around the types of people he did, you are hopeless. There is a sequence of events there and they don't tell a good story regardless of the actions of those he associated with. A very good footballer, you can never take that away from him, his drive, strength, street derived style was unique but a complete dunce.

I’d add that his technique was totally world class in every aspect, meaning there wasn’t a weakness in his passing. If you watch his passes through the lines and down the channels the weight of his passes was exemplary, he could also play someone through whilst running at top speed. He was the complete forward player. That doesn’t mean he had to play every role in attack. It means he could run with the ball with incredible pace, beat a man from a standing start, beat 3/4/5 players on the run, play perfectly weighted passes short and through the lines, pull out pieces of outrageous skill constantly, score goals with left foot, right foot, head, score from distance, incredible movement in the box to get onto crosses and tap ins, free kicks, penalties. He was a one man attacking force. He didn’t defend so if that makes Rooney more complete I’m not sure I agree with that.

Agree with all of this, his technique in dribbling, ball striking and shooting were all elite, and he did it all at 100mph.
I think people genuinely forget how good Ronaldo was from an early age, he had pretty much everything you could ask for in an attacker so it’s no coincidence he went on to be the best player in the world.

Nop. He used to dribble a lot (4-5/game) in his first 3 seasons but failure rate was also high, he used to run into blind alleys and there was no end product.

His next 3 seasons the dribbling stats were: 2.6/game in 06/07, 2.8/game in 07/08 and around 2 per game in 08/09.

At Madrid, 09/10 3.3/game: there after 2 to 2.5 per game until 2015 than less than 2 per game.

So the Ronaldo that we know as one of the best ever was, in his prime, a decent dribbler but not really great at it and therefore not an elite dribbler.

Complete exaggeration. His passing has always been his weakest point whether on ground or over a distance.

Technique has always been very good but never elite, dribbling also decent in his prime but never elite.

He was a complete goalscorer though that I agree.

Using stats to assess dribbling? It surely sucks the fun out of football.

Wayne is on the verge of blacklisting himself from the game. How many clubs or media organisations will want a guy who keeps finding himself in these awkward situations? Can't have many chances left.

I don't know that anybody cares that much these days. Half the government are serial shaggers, so holding footballers and managers to a higher standard than them is pretty absurd. Hancock only got the boot due to the Covid element, not because he cheated on his wife. Just the way society is now.

I don’t think you can really use stats to asses dribbling, isn’t Wilf Zaha regularly top of the league for dribbles completed?

What constitutes a completed dribble?
Ronaldo would get kicked all over the park or hacked down. He'd beat a couple and then bam.

He was pretty much world class in every aspect of his game, dribbling, passing, shooting, heading.....there's a reason he won so many accolades and Madrid spunked all that money for him.

Not an elite, bloody hell.

I’m not sure you can exaggerate the abilities of one of the very greatest footballers of all time. You have impressively tried to do the opposite though

Technically not elite

Not elite. His greatness comes from his achievements as a goalscorer and his longevity. You can laugh all you want but elite technique is the kind that Messi, Maradona, Ronaldinho possess/possessed. His passing has always been his weakest spot which is why he isn't a number 10. Honestly you are massively exaggerating his abilities.

Passing has never been his strong point. Dribbling was good when he was very young but he used to lose the ball ALOT as well. And the dribbling often led to nothing. His dribbling was decent in 06/07, 07/08 and early years at Madrid. All players who dribble get heckled down.

Shooting and heading I will give you; the best header ever and fantastic long range shot. His value comes from his goals and goals win games and trophies so goalscorers are very highly valued.

It is what it is. Dribbles completed is a stat used to assess how good a dribbler you are.

Rooney was a very good player and a good leader, but as a person he appears to be somewhat lacking in the social graces. As a player I would have, and did, travel far to see him, but as a person, if he moved in next door to me I wouldn't be too overjoyed.

So you're telling me the player who completed the most dribbles in the premier league+Champions league between 2003-09 wasn't dribbling elite? That the player who spend his prime years being a top 2 dribblers in La Liga+Top 4 UCL dribblers across 5 years and the player who completed most dribbles in Euro 2004 and WC 2006/2010 wasn't at least world class? It seems like you define "elite" as minimum Messi level (Greatest of all time level).

Over the span of the last 25 years which players were better at dribbling than prime dribbler CR7? I can think of 2 sure ones, The rest are all debatable.

One of my favorite players of all time, always loved watching him when he was on fire. On his day the most unstoppable attacker.

I agree that he should never get in situations like this as a responsible man and father in his mid thirties. Especially as one of the most popular faces in the town and knowing that fame hunters are lurking everywhere to take every small chance to boost their own laughable careers by clinging onto someone who has really achieved something.

That being said he has not done anything illegal and I have no insights in what is really going on so no need to judge him. Just hope he is doing fine and won’t risk the relationship to his children.

I think it could’ve been one of footballs all time tragedies of wasted potential.
A self control problem with drink?
Propensity to get himself in bad situations?
Hyped from a young age?

Without Fergie watching him like a hawk he would have gone the way of Gazza. Even that wasn't enough at times.

On the other hand, had Gazza not snubbed us all those years ago he could have been like Rooney is now.
