After our first WCL match comes our first European away and it's a trip to Madrid.

The life of a Spanish women's team is a difficult one with Barcelona dominating the game so effectively, but it hasn't always been like that. Barca have won the last 6 Liga-F titles but Atletico won three on the run before that. Atletico won the Spanish cup a couple of years back as well.

Recent form then. They were away at St Polten last week and won 6-0. They were home to Barcelona on Sunday and lost 6-0.

On a scale St Polten to Barcelona, where do United sit?

Match is live on Disney+ in the UK.

I’m guessing they’re not far off Brann in their normal quality.

That's a fun way to frame it, though of course we all know that footie doesn't always work that way.

But I'll play anyway. I think we're much closer to Barca when we are healthy and rested. Right now we're healthier than we've been recently, but the effects of lack of rest are hard to predict. Fortunately, both teams will be equally (not) rested. I don't anything about MA's current status in terms of health and depth.

I'll take 'just over half way towards Barca' please - that will do (as said above) as we will be starting to feel the lack of rest.

edit - just to say that is one of the joys of playing in Europe against teams where we really are not sure how good they will be - less expectation on how they will play, more focus on how we play.

Yea, it adds a different kind of spice when looking at how our players and tactics fare against as different teams as Hammarby, Brann, Vålerenga and now Atletico.

Invaluable experience too.
 
I'm really enjoying the unknown quality of our European adventure. Outside of Barcelona and Lyon, I know next to nothing about how good any of the other teams are. It's not like the men's where my knowledge boils down to "Heard of them? Good team" and "Not heard of them - smash this lot"
 


Nice to hear that Vilde is still in touch with her old teammates. She talks in the interview about how Atletico owe themselves and the fans a good performance after that hammering at Barca over the weekend. She reckons Atletico will want to put the pressure on United, could be an interesting game.

Incidentally, Millie Turner seems to appear on several players best mates lists. I get the impression that she's a key social organiser of the squad, as well as being an important player.
 
According to United:
Jess misses out after suffering a concussion in our previous game, while Celin is unavailable due to a back issue.
 
Concussion is a different issue. I'd still name an unfit Bizet on the bench to make them think.

Uniteds medical staff should be fired for letting Park play out the rest of a 1-4 game after she was down for that long. She also went out and took duels and headed the ball. Easily could have gotten 2nd impact syndrome and risked dying or ended her football career early.

Proper amateur hour from Man Uniteds medical staff at the game. Even a rookie like me said immediately to not let her play anymore at any cost! To endanger a player like makes me so angry!
 
Clumsy challenge from Rivière there. Pretty even and pretty open match so far.
 
I'm a little uncomfortable having two backs on yellow cards so early in a match.
 
Red card to Jannsen. I think she's unlucky. Ref reacting to the injury not the foul.
 
For what? It was a dive completely. And she it was not a goal scoring chance either. Its a yellow card on Madrid FFS!
 
Ridiculous decision. The severity of the injury should not be a factor here. It was a clumsy challenge, not a cynical one
 
What the hell. Looks like she mostly pulls out and accidently catches her late. A foul yeah, a yellow sure. Red for what?
 
Horrible looking injury but absolutely no way that’s a red card. It’s not excessive force and there was no attempt to injure
