We Need Two Full Backs

I'm in the one fullback camp, and it has to be a LB. We just don't have an infinite amount of money or, presumably, headroom under PSR to do everything we'd like to do. That said, I see a lot to like about Amass but it's a season too early for him to be counted on for anything more than cameo appearances. Dalot and Mazaraoui are enough for me at RB at this point. Next summer, one will likely have to move on and then we can talk about a RB to usurp the one who remains.

Still hoping Kayode is in the thinking for RB as obviously Mbeumo will know him from time at Brentford, so relationship is already there. I genuinely think Hall is still the top LB target, however no chance Newcastle sell 4 of their first XI this summer. So if we want him then can see us having to wait it out until summer 2027.

No offence pal but DJed Spence doesn’t score the goal that Dorgu did vs Newcastle or Arsenal, never !
Why would I take offence? It’s irrelevant though.

Do you think that’s a good combination ? I don’t.

I like Dorgu, and think he has an important place in the squad. But in no way would I ever want to see Spence and Dorgu play together.

Not play together but they could easily co exist in a 26 man squad, clearly Spence is no good that’s why Liverpool are now trying to sign him.

Lots of players Liverpool have bought that I wouldn’t go near. Irrelevant.

Why would we buy players who can’t develop partnerships and don’t work well together.

He’s not a player we should go near.

I’m not sure about that, or at least not entirely. He’s versatile in that he can play both flanks and he’s got a proper burst of pace. Also played his best on the biggest stage, so he’s got the stones for it.

However, that all reads to me as an upgrade on Mazraoui, and I’m not sure that would be my priority this window.

I’m not sure it would be. We’d just be trading technical attributes for physical ones, which doesn’t make much sense to me.

I think he’d offer more than Mazraoui, but the point is the gains would be fairly marginal. It’s not going to move the needle a huge amount.

Missed the earlier discussion but I'd take Djed Spence to back up Shaw and eventually replace him.

Of course Lewis Hall's profile may be more appealing as a long term target, age and playstyle, but I feel Spence would maybe help us more in the short term

Overall I don’t think so. I’m some areas he’s offer more but in others he’d offer less. Should be aiming higher.

I'd love to get Kayode for the right - but it seems LB is more of the pressing issue.
With Brentford getting Europe I think signing him this summer has been largely off the cards for most teams. I'm hopefully we at least have him in our sights for next summer, although if we were to sell Maz and Newcastle refuse to sell Hall this summer, then why not test Brentford's resolve.

We need 2x attaching full backs to contribute to our assists, we’re woeful in that department except Bruno of course.

By all means keep a couple of defensive ones for specific games but we need ones that can attack and crest chances more than sit back and barely get over the half way line and when they do do nothing with it.

I don’t want Spence - his club form was patchy last season and I don’t want an inverted full back playing with an inverted winger.

Dorgu isn’t an option for me either. I thought he was acceptable as a forward but really poor when he played left back.

Defo needs to be a left footer for some natural width.

Yeah I feel certain next summer is defensive rebuild

Have there been any rumous about Truffert? He impressed me at Bournemouth. Great engine. Admittedly I am not scouting expert and no clue what he would cost.

For 20m, Spence would have been a great squad player. But we love to play the waiting game this summer

Luca Digne to PSG for 8.5 million.

Steal.

Seen him linked with Chelsea as well. Anyone know anything about this lad?

I'm predicting Antonee Robinson will be the one we end up with as he's the only name being floated outside Lewis Hall, though there's obviously a chance we pull a random name out the hat with no prior links like Tielemans and Santos.

One reason I think Robinson is because he's homegrown and we'll be conscious of our life without Shaw/Maguire/Mount/Rashford over next couple of years.

Maybe we go for that Spanish guy

We were quite heavily linked with Estupinan at one point. Seems like he was a bit out of favour last season for AC Milan and has also fallen behind Hincapie for Ecuador so his star has dimmed a bit. Not the age profile we would really want at 28 but if he was available for a reasonable fee he could be a good option to share the games with Shaw in the short-term. He was a good all-round proven left-back in the Prem. Would depend on how he fits into Amorim’s plans at Milan.

Robinson seems to be a strange signing given that Shaw contract is expired soon so we will need a more long term young left back but also ready to play first team football.

Robinson would do us for another 3-4 seasons, Shaw will likely get extended on a reduced deal. He's a very good player, was excellent defensively and has now added attacking ability to his game.

The issue I see is Robinson would have to be less than £40 mil to really make sense as you don't want to be paying over 10 mil a season for a fullback position. Fulham aren't selling him for a reasonable fee.

I reckon we could get him for a bit less than that as there's no doubt he would be willing to push for move

Gemini predicts 28m for Robinson.
Id say he’s the kind of player we could flip in 2-3yrs to West Ham for half of what we pay.

I really like Robinson as a player, but he's just too old to be signing at this point. Turns 29 tomorrow, and FB is a position that peaks early. Typically guys are declining by 30, as 25-29 is the peak age.

It just doesn't make any sense unfortunately. We'd be wise to stay away.

This is probably where I agree on age. Fullback is arguably the most demanding position, and players do often peak early here. I'd rather go for Spence as he would offer us something different - electric pace, good going forwards, and then we have Shaw where we need to defend more. Robinson is a good player, but he's not really going to improve us much.

We should be aiming for an Evra type fullback - he would have been worth one billion dollars in this market.
