Westminster Politics 2024-2029

I only received my poll card yesterday. There hasn't been as much coverage on the news as you'd expect for an election imo. I think it would very easy to not know these were even going on. But I agree they're the type of elections unless you were "into" politics, you wouldn't vote.
Shocking you've had your poll card yesterday, you should have had it ages ago.

Past experience would suggest it is always a mistake to look on local elections (that are more than 2 years from a GE) as a means to register disagreement with the Government of the day. Apart from the humbling of some party top-brass on TV/press, nothing will actually change in the grander state of things, only in the local scene.

Alas, there will be 'tears before bedtime' tonight for some... and horrible hangovers going forward for those who voted in brand new political masters in their local Councils.

'Buyers remorse' will be soon apparent to many, in the days to come.

I have to disagree - this has the potential to bring down the government, and will do so from the party members.

Pretty much had to vote Labour in a desperate attempt to keep out reform. To be fair, I like our local Labour councillor, though when they knocked on my door the other day I did have to point out that their opening gambit of "we are the only ones close enough to stop Reform" really isn't great a policy.

I really fecking hate them standing outside the polling place though, as soon as people were walking up both Reform idiots were trying to block as much of the entry path as possible to shove leaflets in peoples hands. Got a stiff "no thanks, I don't vote Tory" from me much to the amusement of my missus and a few folk around. They should get to feck with that rubbish.

Isn't that kind of behaviour illegal?

They are allowed to canvass outside but they should not be obstructing people to vote. If you see anyone doing that, report to the staff outside. Lost count of the amount of times we’ve told off candidates and their people for this.
They knew the boundaries of what was acceptable I guess, and being "told off" really doesn't mean much to them. It did strike me as odd that none of the others called them out on it though.

But anyway, I can't see how it does them many favours. Surely if anyone is intimidated they'd not vote those pricks...well, one would hope. But like I say, the whole practice should be scrapped anyway. It's hard enough getting people to vote as it is, let alone feeling a potential gauntlet of eyes just to get in the place.

I just get a postal vote, easiest way to vote.

This is going to be an interesting test of the strength of anti Reform sentiment. I’ll probably regret saying this but I’m reasonably optimistic.

Nah, they will win a considerable number of seats unfortunately. It probably won’t be as high as polls predicted but it will still be a lot. We will then end up with complete and utter morons responsible for some of the key local services and it will be a disaster. But this is what people want so let them have it.

I think it's safe to say they'll win a lot of seats, but does that translate in to actual control of councils?

Yeah, by ‘optimistic’ I mean they’ll win a lot, but not as much as has been predicted.

It may not be a bad thing, allowing them to show how incompetent they actually are at governing.

A lot of the seats are in London, and Reform could make headway in Outer London boroughs controlled by the Tories.

They could gain control of councils in Essex, Hampshire and the North of England. This is quite a favourable map for them (the colour coding is taken from Wikipedia and designates the type of Council).

Can't be arsed to find my passport so I'm not voting.

Are you suggesting this local election result leads to a 'No confidence' vote in the house and the PLP actually votes its own government out of office?

Now that really is cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I went out and voted. Waited for my friend by the door afterwards and everyone was nodding at me on the way out like I was some kind of invigilator.

It was a dizzying if short-lived experience of power.

Admittedly just a prediction but sweet Jesus!

This is a good thing. When these councillors inevitably feck up there won't be enough money in the world that will be able to stop the press from eventually reporting on said feck ups.

Reform have shown time and again that they're all fart and no shit. It's better they are in the spotlight now, actually having to do work instead of just chatting bollocks, than at General Election time.

Looked up my local candidates earlier and 3 of them live either on my road or the adjoining roads. Now I know the old guy is a reform prick, thankfully the other two are Labour and Lib Dems.

Mad that they list their actual addresses.

Sorry but a combination of right wing media covering for them and the average reformer not caring about anything other than wanting fewer black and brown faces at the local Tescos means even if they continue to perform poorly in local government it won't matter a jot

If Reform make a mess of things and there's a chance that the Tory party can come back, I wouldn't be surprised if the right wing media turned and started exposing Reform.

They havent learnt a single thing from Farages Brexit bullshit, honestly embarassing a grown adult would believe a single thing that man says.

Tbf it's probably more that the largeish minority of people like this are more motivated than they are numerous which will always do them well in the local elections.

We're too far down the slope now. Even the press can't handbrake what they've done here.

The only way they can get the Reform voter unattached to them now is a virtue spiral to the right with Restore splitting the vote 3 ways, but the anti-Faragist vote is also split..

Reading an article about Staffordshire county council which Reform won last year. A chaotic mess it seems. Repeat that over other councils over the coming years there could be a backlash to Reform.

These cnuts don’t care, Reform have already made a mockery of the Councils they run and they have been a complete shambles. Now even more Reform Councillors who haven’t got a brain cell between them will be put in change of decisions which have massive implications. No doubt their moronic supporters will blame the Government instead when the shit hits in the fan. What an utterly depressing situation.
