Ronaldinho is the obvious one but then Ronaldo may not have happened.

Who have we been nailed on, apparently, to sign, over the years, but didn't. And who did we sign instead, was it a good move or not?

Iirc, we were nailed on to sign Defoe, but signed Saha instead. Defoe could have been a superb player for us.

Didn't we almost sign Henry from Monaco?
Gascoigne and Shearer are the two for me. We would have won a few more CL in the 90s if we had them imo.

Wesley Sneijder.

We chose to play with Anderson and Cleverley instead. Still under SAF in those 2 seasons we finished 2nd on goal difference and won the league by a landslide the next year.

Lucas Moura was another one we were close to signing.

Charlie Adam. I believe we would have at least 2 more CL's had we signed the tubby maestro.

In Fergie's first autobiography I seem to remember him listing a load of players who could have been sealed but Martin Edwards refused to sanction.

Peak Kluivert and Ortega are two names which stood out.

Every now and then I go back a few pages on the transfer forum, it's quite funny remembering all those we've been linked with and were interested in over the years!

Didn't you almost sign Di Canio at one point?

Not sure how close we were but Modric would have been a great signing.

As I recall Fergie loved him and was definitely interested but Gaby wasn't keen on leaving Fiorentina.
Who can blame him?
He looked great in purple.

Douglas Costa from shakhtar.
Don't remember what happened but i was so excited to see him in a United shirt.

EDIT: My memory serves me wrong, we wanted him when he was at Gremio!

Never forget that, was in school buzzing we'd signed a Brazilian, gutted when it fell through.
Yes it was the same feeling when we actually did sign Owen Hargreaves.

There's one that should have got away.
