What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

I fear center mid is our biggest problem after the 10 positions, that are now 'fixed'. The midfield is completely open most of the time with Casemiro & Bruno often unable to get hold of a midfield 3.
True.

But even with that, we would still win a lot more games just with a striker and keeper they are even average level I think.

If it came down to bringing in a proper striker OR a proper keeper, it would have to be a proper striker. Yes of course Onana has been, shall we say, a disappointment and I am very much on record opposing bringing him in at the time we did, but on the other hand he has had a one or two streaks of very good form. Whereas Hojlund just isn't up to the job and Zirkzee is nothing more than a decent squad man.

A striker above all else now. The rest of the squad can be turned over in the next two seasons, which it how it has to be no matter what our wishful thinking may say otherwise.

Al Hilal have an agreement with Milan on Theo Hernandez for only €30m euros plus 5m add-ons. That's around £25m. They have not an agreement with Theo yet who might prefer to play in EPL. Should we hijack that deal?

I think as a priority we need the striker to compliment Cunha and Mbuemo.

But...if we wanted a keeper or CM I'd be happy to have Rashford as number 9 for a year. He may flourish with the 2 behind him taking some of the pressure off.

Absolutely! Dorgu is still so raw and is playing in such a vital position in this system. We still need an upgrade there and Theo is one of the best left backs attacking wise. Wonder why City and Madrid weren’t in for him though as they were both interested in left back position

Are you just ignoring the fact he has fallen out with Amorim? You think they are just going to kiss and make up?

That seems incredibly cheap for a player of that quality. Answer is yes if he wants to come. Sad watching all these players with years left at the top going to saudi. Neves and Mitrovic would both improve this team massively. But unfortunately in Saudi . That tax free money is obviously hard to turn down

Would be an incredible upgrade and Dorgu/Amass/Leon could learn from him. He'll probably want a huge salary though, so need to sell some big earners first.

GK
Yoro DeLigt Heaven
Amad Wharton Fernandes Dorgu
Mbuemo Cunha
Hojlund

Only 4 signings this summer then next summer replace Dorgu and Hojlund if they don’t progress in what should be a better side.

But what we need is to get a grip on our injury pandemic, I truly believe if we had a settled first 11 for a continuous run of games we’d start to look like a proper team.
Personally think that midfield gets overrun. If you're banking on Bruno in that midfield you're going to need a lot of athleticism so I would probably prefer Baleba over Wharton in that case. If Bruno gets sold, buy Wharton and another A+ athlete with good heading.

Would also have Zirkzee over Hojlund all day when flanked by genuine goal threats like Mbeumo and Cunha.

Nah, need to stay on track and ruthlessly address our signings in terms of priority. Dorgu hasn't thrilled yet but he's young, came in January and is very serviceable. Dalot can do an adequate job there too as can Shaw and Amass.

Need to get that soft centre sorted. That midfield has gotten worse and worse since Carrick left and we won't see significant gains until our midfielders start to dominate games. Would probably also try and fix the GK position too as that should hopefully be a one out one in job. Sounds like Onana might be keen to go elsewhere.

Ah, still wouldn't rule it out. The club could still say to him that it might be best for both parties to go their separate ways. Latest fee I heard was 120mn - his best position has now been filled by another player and we could afford to sign a Baleba/Wharton midfield with the sales of him and Garnacho which I think would set us up for a decade.

I feel like Casemiro is staying and will be first choice for one more season, so I don't see us buying a midfielder this summer.

Yoro on the left?

For me it's now something like this:

Out:
PlayerPrice (gbp)
Antony20m
Rashford40m
Sancho15m
Garnacho40m
Alvaro Carreras (sell on)10m
Casemiro15m (Saudi)
Hojlund15m
Andre Onana20m (Saudi)
Total160m

In:
PlayerPrice (gbp)
Cunha (LF)(62.5m)
Mbeumo (RF)(50m)
Gyokeres (ST)(60m)
CM (CDM)(50m)
Garcia/Emi Martinez(GK)(35m)
Total257.5m

If we fail to sell enough players, we don't replace the GK, if a target can't be identified in the midfield we don't sell Cas and we don't upgrade the midfield.

Some of our players (Antony, Garnacho) will cost more and Garcia will move to Barcelona.

We won't ever be top five so long as we have a midfield of Bruno and Casemiro. One is probably the most risk taking 10 on the planet and the other is one of the all time great defensive midfielders but now has no legs. Would be piling money into midfield over Gyokeres any day.

Yeah and when you see Whitwell latest article it seems that the club see a striker is more important than a GK, almost like they are prepared to give Onana another season with a more attacking front 3 taking off pressure.

He does say that we are looking to add an athletic no 8 midfielder who you would think makes it more difficult for teams to get through the middle, ideally that player is able to play as a no 6 too. I am struggling to come up with anyone who fits that profile though.

Should we be looking at Jobe Bellingham?
He looks a very good player to me. Only 19 but already physically strong. He'll go to Dortmumd for £25M and in two years they'll want £80M for him. It's like Wharton; he was available 18 months ago for less than £20M.

If we persist with Bruno and Casemiro we get killed every game and end up bottom half of the table quite easily.

I don't get the bulk of our fan base not seeing the need for an absolute re-shuffle in CM for us - it's by far the biggest problem area we have. Bruno & Casemiro as a pair are a disaster and will easily be played through.

Don't think you realise how competitive the top half of the table is these days - we are miles of it

Well last season there were three players I massively wanted Desire Doue, Joao Neves and Yoro. We werent prepared to pay for Neves and probably lost out anyway. Doue we never seemed to move for, still think there was a chance....damn PSG (happened before with Mendes too)

This summer there are/were four signings I massively want(ed)....

Mastantuono...Damn PSG and now Madird moving, we got no chance

Cunha....Cracking signing of genuine quality that can go past players from a standing start which is vital to us and ag ood striker option

Chevalier - Not seen much linking him, gives me potential prime DeGea vibes...replacing the mistakes and BARELY and top top saves of Onana would be great business anda move we CAN do.

Baleba - This could have happened with a Bruno sale and he would be the ideal fit.....it wont happen now.

But beyond Cunha/Mbuemo we definately need a GK, CM and striker.....personally nobody beyond Osimhen as a ST excites me

I read online somewhere that we need a "goal scoring striker" - it's astonishing that we've got to that point with our current number 9 where that qualifier needs adding. Feck me.

Mind you while we're at it we could also do with a "shot stopping goalkeeper"

My perfect summer with a £250-275m budget:

GK - Pope - 7.5m
LWB - Theo Hernandez - 27.5m
CM - Lamine Camara - 45m
LAM - Cunha - 62.5m
RAM - Mbuemo - 55m
ST - Gyokeres 65m

Then next year look to bring in:

Long-term GK - TBD
CM (type depending) - TBD
Long-term CCB - eg. Giorgio Scalvini
RWB - eg. Wesley Franca
LAM Prospect - TBD

Ideally

In: Mbuemo, Cunha, Goncalo Ramos, Ederson
Out: Garnacho, Rashford, Sancho, Antony, Hojlund

G.Ramos
Cunha - Mbuemo
Dorgu - Bruno - Ederson - Amad
Yoro - De Ligt - Mazraoui
Onana

A “pass and move” midfielder would also be nice.

I've booked an appointment at the opticians tomorrow, I swear you put Sancho on the left.

This must be part of the multiverse where Sancho didn't tweet Freedom, battle ten hag on twitter and didn't try at all in training and got told to stay at home for his lack of effort

Even his boyhood club sent him back and United want a cultural reset

Probably too hard to do a deal but Grealish. I think he's made for a 10 role in Amorim's system.

But imagine he got back to his best, how that team would perform

I think we could do with adding some options to our midfield

Why don’t we try a loan for Douglas Luiz?

Or would Ruben Neves be tempted to leave the sand dunes behind and hook up with Bruno at club level?

We MUST add one more midfielder. I am very surprised that our two first (and for huge fee) signings will be no10 players.
Sure, both Mbuemo and Cunha are upgrade but striker and midfielder should be our priority. We need to sign dmc who is also good on the ball (if Bruno will be other dmc).

Not gonna lie, i am happy with Mbuemo and Cunha but the fact that nothing is going on on striker area is killing my mood.

We definitely need to bring in a striker. If we manage to sell Hojlund, it’ll happen for sure, it’s just a matter of what options will still be available. If we do only that, the transfer window will be successful, but there still be a few unresolved issues.
If we can bring in both a midfielder and a goalkeeper, I think finishing in the top four won’t just be possible, it should be a must.

Yeah should definitely enquire about Douglas Luiz
