If De ligt is off the table then i'd go with the following..

CB Koulibaly or Milenkovic

LB Kieran Tierney, would be a muppet-tastic signing as far as i'm concerned.

DM Declan Rice, I think a specialist ball winner is required.

CM Adrien Rabiot, free transfer

RW ???

Lukaku and De Gea could potentially leave, so a new striker and goalkeeper could also arrive.
Can he play RB as well? I don't think Shaw is great but we are dead in the water at RB.

He could play RB as shown in the Scotland team to accommodate Robertson who isn't as versatile.
Is he good at RB? If so I could see the sense in the signing as we can't start the season with Young or Dalot starting at RB.

James/any fast, tricky winger gives us additional options and strength on the break, which is good.

What we desperately need in attack, and have done for years, is a player with a skill set that can decide games where the opponent team sits deep. The typical 0-0 games against dross or at home against mid table sides. That player can be a number of things really. A creative midfielder who can unlock a packed defense (where we currently only Pogba and - perhaps - Mata), a CB with aerial strength who can get you set piece goals (Terry, Kompany and van Dijk have been examples lately) and a player great at set pieces who can give you a free kick goal or create danger on set pieces in general.

Our problem in later years seems to be that we lack all of these types/qualities.

We need to sell/release/retire 15-17 players over the next two summer windows and replace them with 10-12 players that are suited to play high press and possession-based football. Rest can come from the academy.

I've only seen him play RB for a below average Scotland team and he's done well considering his surroundings. He would be a clear upgrade over Young and Dalot at RB and would relegate Shaw to the bench at LB imo.

Whether we can get him out of Celtic is another matter though. But if we can , then I expect him to have a similar impact like Robertson at Liverpool.

Interesting, I've only seen him at LB, and while I am not convinced on Shaw I think right now we need so much done to this team that we can't be wasting a buy on upgrading one of the better players we have, so it would have to be a fullback that can play both sides.

Rewarding mediocrity with long contracts and undeserved high wages.

I remember a time when United had strict wages policies. So strict that Ferguson himself earned less than George Graham, we couldn't afford players like Batistuta (while Chelsea could get the likes of Desailly, Casiraghi and Vialli from the Serie A), and our club captain had to threaten to leave so he could be paid 50k per week in 2001.

Nowadays we're handing out big wages to players who people who show good form for two weeks, players who've spent more time in the physio room than on the pitch, a mediocre winger-turned-fullback, amongst others.
I agree, plus the situation was always going to get worse when we handed out that Sanchez contract, I still can't get over how people where saying it was bargain at the time and calling us pointed out the escalation, we now have De Gea and pogba wanting that money and any other big name we bring in.

We also have to get over the stigma of letting people go on a free, its better to let people go on a free then having them sitting on the bench earning millions of pounds a year. The Rojo contract still utterly baffles me, the guy was coming back from career threatening injury and we give him a 4 year contract..... utterly mental!!!

I honestly think the only way to deal with situation is probably going to be to pay some players like Sanchez Rojo, maybe Darmain to leave. And let players like Smalling and Jones go for next to nothing. And selling players like De Gea and Pogba if they won't sign new contracts for reasonable (no way near sanchez money) contracts.

Basically reset the equilibrium almost start again with a more strict wage structure in place.

I never understood the policy of finalising around only 3-4 transfers every summer. You do that when you have a functional team and you have to close your gaps, or increase your quality in certain positions. What we needed since SAF retired was a massive proper rebuilt with high quality players that never happened. Instead we follow this policy of a few transfers, several fail, then the same again and we are stuck with mediocrities every year in so many positions. We need one amazing summer if we are to come back ever. And the following is not football manager, or something crazy, it is very down to earth if we wanted do, based on the 2019 summer market.

------------------------------------De Gea ----------------------------
RB/Dalot ------------- CB ---------------CB/Lindelof----------------Shaw
------------------------------CM----CM----Pogba------------------------------------
--------------RW--------------------ST-------------------------Rashford/Martial

- Buy Meunier, Aldeweireld & Rabiot for a combined of 60 million. You will never get such a chance again to fill in 3 positions with class players for this amount of money.
- Buy Bruno Fernandes or a similar all around player who should be creative as well (70m)
- Buy De Ligt (80m).
- Buy Sancho & Felix to a create an amazing young, hungry quality front 3. (~200m)

Total 410m. Sell Lukaku, Darmian, Rojo, Jones (-100m). Net spending around 300m. I know it may seem too much but it is what we finally need. With something like this I would be ok to sell even De Gea to recoup 60-70m and have Henderson and Romero to compete. Try to sell Lingard as well.

------------------------------------De Gea ----------------------------
Meunier/Dalot ------------- De Ligt ---------------Alderweireld/Lindelof----------------Shaw
--------------------------B. Fernandes----Rabiot----Pogba------------------------------------
--------------Sancho--------------------Felix-------------------------Rashford/Martial

What we gain?

- You have an experienced RB and give time to Dalot to develop and make this position his.
- A class defender on the cheap. A class midfielder for free.
- The top future defender and two of the top future attacking players.

How you are going to convince all of them? By presenting them something like the above and the chance to be the leaders in the rebirth of Man Utd. If Sancho had second thoughts because of us missing on Ch.L, with such a top project he would come here running.

But I know.. We will end up overspending on RB, end up with our 3rd choice on CB and possibly buy Bale as well. And we will spend next year asking where was this DoF we wanted.

Love this idea. The only problem is that with the exception of a couple of players none want to come too United.

Ralf Rangnick.
There's actually a lot of decent value options available:

Aldeweireld, £25m (release clause)
Pepe, £70m (Lille reportedly are after €80m)
Meunier, £22m (PSG are reportedly after €25m for him)
Rabiot, free (up to €10m sign-on fees)
James £20m

Total ~£150m

~£60m for Aldeweireld, Meunier & Rabiot is the bargain of the century. Especially when we are in the middle of a rebuild.

If Lukaku leaves, cheaper replacement = We save money. His replacement is going to be on lower wages.
If Pogba leaves, cheaper replacement = Bruno £80m will be much less than Pogba fee.

If both of those leave, we would end up with under £100m net spend.

That's without all the deadwood we could recoup fees for and not miss.

To all the people banging on about ''Ole said, we can only make 3,4 signings this summer''. How is that unrealistic for us?

Everyone will have you believe it's going to be a 3 years rebuild obviously though.

What do we still need for next season?
Good enough squad that we on paper should be more than good enough for a top 4 finish. For this to be a probable outcome (assuming that the coaching does not influence this) we need an RW, RB, CB, CDM and CM. If we can move on some of the deadwood and bring in some younger players as well, then this would be positive long term.

Transfers in.

RB options:
1. Atal: £40m at most. Modern attacking wingback. Can play right wing as well. Not the best defensively, but great attacking qualities.
2. Meunier. £25m. Decent both ways. Could perform well for a few years until Laird/Dalot are ready.
3. AWB. £40m-£50m, if more, then a big no. Great defensively and physically. Strange that he seems more comfortable on the ball when moving compared to when he stands still.

CB options:
1. Ake. £40m-£50m. Left-footed and sided. Good on the ball, effective in aerial duels despite short frame.
2. Mehir Demiral. No idea what Sassuolo will demand, but Juventus are linked for £15m and some first option agreement.
3. Alderweireld. £25m. Same as Meunier would be a short term stop gap. Also, would weaken Spurs given that they would find it difficult to find a replacement for a similar quality for the same amount.

Would also prefer us to get "first option agreement" on Godfrey or buy him and loan him back for a season.

CDM:
1. Rodri. £55m-£60m clause. The best alternative available. Likely off to City. Could still active his clause and force City to pay him more.
2. Rabiot. "Free".
3. Kalvin Phillips. £25m. Good at protecting the defenders and playing out of defence. Mobile and can play long passes. Not the best in the final third.

CM:
1. Barella: £40m-£50m. Herrera, with better technical ability.
2. Aouar: £50m-£60m. Movement, decisions, close control.
3. Tielemans: £40m. Performed well for Leicester, competent in all elements of the game.

RW:
1. Hakim Ziyech: £25m clause. Left-footed, smart and technical player. Would perform well until we get CL-qual and buy Sancho.
2. Sarabia: £15m clause. Same as Ziyech. Think Mata with some physique.
3. Zaniolo: £40m-£50m. Built like a tank, but still mobile and can use both feet and good on the ball. Potential huge upside. Can play multiple positions, might be better suited to play centrally.

If Inter wants Lukaku, then we should ask for Lautaro + £££ or go for Sebastien Haller.

I think all options, bar Rodri are players that we could lure here. And excluding Zaniolo, Phillips and Demiral, the rest would definitively be improvements compared to our current options immediately. And on paper, we should be more than good enough to beat Chelsea and Arsenal for the last CL-spot.

So long final post!

That's the kind of approach the biggest club in the World would take, and in fact it's exactly what they're doing this summer. We talk the talk, Real Madrid walk the walk.

I will go in full Muppet mode for this one:

De Gea
AWB De Ligt Lindelof Shaw
Neves Rice Bruno
Sancho Felix Rash/Martial

Subs: Romero, Baily, Smalling, Fred, Mctominay, Gardner, Gomez, Chong, Greenwood, James

Ins would cost around 500M (If we want we can get Alderweild instead of De Ligt to spare some cash and it is still a good side).

Getting rid of Sanchez salary and selling Pogba Lukaku Matic Darmian etc will make it under 300M for transfers...

Result: You will have one of the most talented sides in football. Furthermore after 2-3 years even without further investing this will be one of the strongest sides in the world.

Now I dont even know why this kind of strategy should be a MUPPET THING

I mean its a strategy to rebuild Manchester United for under 300M ...
Are we the richest team in the world or what?
Now just watch how Real Madrid buy also Pogba and Mbappe and get over 500m in one summer to rebuild on one miserable season... They will be ready to attack everything again for years to come. With a single summer transfer season...

I read somebody saying United “Talk the talk” and Real “Walk the walk”.
Unfortunately I think I agree.

Likeliest scenario at the moment.

James, Wan Bissaka, B.Fernandes, Maguire. Are we happy with that ? I’m guessing we’ll try and agree a deal for Sancho next summer hopefully.

How would that team do next season?
Front line wouldn't score anywhere near enough goals, and the midfield would be terribly unbalanced to try and make up for it.

Very suprised Donny Van den Beek has no thread if his own, has nobody suggested hes the perfect Herrera replacement and probably a better all round player?

Anyway were linked with him in the transfer tweets via talksport today, maybe a thread of his own?

Do you rate Van de Beek better than N'Dombele as Herrera replacement?

If we're struggling to bring in a Top CB, then we have to go for Alderwireld from spurs £25 million, is a snip for his Quality, has better than we have?
Unless Woodward is adamant on getting a better one at what cost? Delight won't get him, forget it, Koulabaly looks out if reach unless a silly amount is offered?
It's iether go for a CB who's unproven with or go with experience for at least 2 seasons with Alderwiereld.

Firstly, we need a sensible approach to transfers and go for players with high potential and sign those players who fit the style of play we want to implement.

Liverpool is a great example of a team whose has a great defence and great attackers with workhorse like midfield. So Klopp is not stupid to try possession based football against top teams because he knows his midfield will come up short, what he does is try to press with those work horses and obtain ball quickly as possible and then with good attackers hit teams on the break.

With us we can't implement any style right now because we are poor in every department. If we try to park the bus we are poor at the back and our defenders and even DDG has conceded comical goals. Whereas our midfield does not have the workrate to press and our attackers are not useful enough to make most of opportunities or hurt teams

Since we can't sign 10 players in which is an easier way inorder to freshen up the squad. I would attempt to repair the defense and get a RB and a Cb, infact if we are not able to sign a good forward due to lack of Champions league football and right players not available, i would sign 2 Cbs and a Rb. Possible options for Rb would be Cancelo and Muenier and Cb would be De Ligt, Koulibally as the expensive dominating cbs along with a cheaper option like Alderweirald or Saliba.

Next i would try to sign Rabiot as from all the options he appears to be the only one who can control the midfield and he is free aswell. Lastly i would sign Bruno or Van de Beek. This will be 5 more signings, but we will be great in midfield and defense and can actually play with cohesiveness and create chances.

I think we won't be able to compete for the league, however we will be able to get top four and then next season we can spend big on two top talents like Sancho and Felix to fix our attack. Or somebody in the front three to replace Pogba.

Team for 2019-2020
Cancelo Deligt/Koulibally Alderweirald/Saliba Shaw
Bruno Rabiot Fred
Pogba
Martial and Rashford

Team for 2020-2021
Same as above except
Bruno Rabiot new signing
Sancho Felix Martial/Rashford

So if we had to rank the chances of the main players we're linked with, in terms of chances of coming here?
I'd go (likeliest to least)

  • Wan Bissaka
  • Bruno
  • Rabiot
  • Maguire
  • Bale
  • Meunier
  • Cancelo
  • Koulibally
  • De ligt

I cant really comment or compare as ive not seen anything on N dombele, ive seen Van de Beek and im very impressed with his mobility, reading of the game, defensive workrate and also his contribution to attack, the perfect box to box midfielder for us id say.

N'Dombele is similar to Kante, just a bit more offensive than him.

But I agree with you, Van de Beek would be a good fit for our midfield.

As long as we don't improve our attackers, our defense and midfield will still come under lot's of pressure. Improve our attack, they will think twice to commit forward.

I would be fine if we sign these 5 (not including James since he's already been confirmed)

I'm warming to the idea of a Bale loan for a season with an option. Worst case scenario we send him back to Madrid and maybe he'd do just enough to help us to top 4 next season so we can go after Sancho. Would probably rely on getting rid of Sanchez though.

So realistic targets

Wan Bassaka
Maguire
Rabiot/Fernandes
Bale

Massive improvements in areas of need RB/CB and I fail to see how Bale could be worse than Mata/Lingard

We need at least 4 players: Defender, right back, midfielder and right winger? Do we need more than 4? Of course, 2 more. But we can't sign 6 quality starters in one transfer window.

We already signed a winger (James). It seems that Bruno Fernandes and Wan Bissaka could be next.

De Ligt or Koulibaly would be great, but I guess we will go for a tier below, someone like Maguire or Diaz. Even they are not the best we can get (same as James, Wan Bissaka and Fernandes), they would improve our team. The first eleven without Young, Smalling, Matic, Lingard, etc would make a big difference in our style of play.

Also, there are players available like Alderwereld, Meunier, and Rabiot that we can get without spending too much.

I'd be happy and supportive if we sigh Wan Bissaka, but I honestly don't think another young right back is what we should be prioritising. Dalot is equally as promising in my opinion. Has a very well planned path towards a starting XI position with Valencia leaving, Darmian becoming obsolete, and Young declining. I really feel that sidelining his progression for the sake of a more conservative fullback wouldn't do us much good. If we sign a commanding central defender who is clearly on a higher level than anything we have (De Ligt, Koulibaly) I think that will do wonders for Diogo and he'll kick on from there.

It's looking very likely that we'll sign Bruno in the coming days which means we'll probably be focusing on a 4-1-2-3 formation next season with one of Matic/McTominay/New signing playing as a deeper midfielder. So that one signing completely alters our options and our ambitions. If Bruno kicks on and we sign a world class defender, along with a goal scoring right winger, there's no reason we shouldn't be challenging for honours next season.

Tierney does a job for Scotland at RB but he's nowhere near as effective as he is on the left-hand side. He would definitely be an upgrade on Shaw but we have bigger problems to sort first. I wouldn't sign him to play as a RB based on what I have seen.

Felix/Werner/Haller
Sancho/Loranzo/Benjwein/Richarlison
Harverz/Bruno/Maddison
VandeBeek/Rabiot/Aouar
Rodri/Ndobele/Neves
Semedo/Cancelo/AWB
Delegit/Koulibaly/Maguire

One from each line would vastly improve the team and we will have money to spend from the sales of Degea/Lukaku/Pogba/Matic/Baily/Rojo/Darmian

Please don't say these players are not attainable as I feel atleast the 2nd or 3rd option in each line could gettable

Thoughts here... we need lots of positions as there is only 5 players currently i would want to see log significant minutes the upcoming year...

De Gea
Lindelof
Shaw
Pogba
Rashford

Agree or disagree but that is my list. Obviously De Gea and Pogba have questions but at least for De Gea, Oblak might be an easy fix, but for arguments sake lets just keep those five.

Def- Now at Right back I would go for Meunier, but we seem focused on AWB which is ok but seems a bit excessive to me. At center back I would move heaven or earth for DeLigt, but Alderweireld is a economical back-up.

Mid- At CM I would love Rice and Fernades with Pogba, and still have Fred and McTominay for Rotation. Also love Rabiot skills, I just have too many questions about his attitude.

Attack- Sancho is going nowhere this year and that might work to our advantage with no CL this year. We have James but if we could get Felix I would be over the moon.

Only other issue is left wing for me and we can survive with Martial out there I guess.

Bottom line we need lots of quality to do anything next year. Lets hope we get rid of some dead weight and get some class in.

So my ideal squad next year based on what i want and based on what I can guess is United's preferred choice at certain positions...

------------------------De Gea -------------------------
AWB---------De Ligt---------Lindelof-------------Shaw
--------------------------Rice----------------------------
----------B. Fernandes------Pogba----------------------
Felix-----------------Rashford--------------------Martial

Said it last year and I'll say it again this, we need a top class NATURAL RW more then anything else. It's been our weak spot since Nani left and has become our blind spot much in the same way CM was under the last years of Fergie.

Martial, Rashford, Lingard and Sanchez have all failed in their trails on that side and we can't expect James to be the answer.

Without one, we yet again go into a season with a lopsided attack where teams know if they stop our left (and Pogba), they have a great chance of winning.

I just don't see a successful season if Mata or Lingard start as first choice there. We'd either need to change to a 2 up front, or we should expect another very long season...
