What is your Serie A all-time xi?

You can play a game with Serie A where you keep making teams of players unpicked in the thread thus far as see how far you have to go before the drop in quality is distinctive.

That could definitely go on for quite a bit in some positions assuming you look at it from quality/talent at their peak and "would this team be a tough match for the other one" perspective rather than final career accomplishments.

I'm surprised you're the only person who included Kaka. His reputation died when he went to Madrid but he was absolutely supreme in that FC Milano team from 2005-2009.

Not old enough to have witnessed some of the others, so I just went with players I saw from the the mid-late 90s onwards. For me it was between him Totti, Del Piero & Rui Costa in that role. You could put Zidane, Platini, Baggio, Rivera, I think you could even have Zico in there.

But Kaka was just phenomenal for those years, wonderful player.

In fairness you have so many greats to pick from and it seems to cover a wider time span than anyhting to do with the PL all time xi. Go back further and you have the likes of Keegan, Dalglish, Charlton, Best, Law, Moore, Hansen, Clemence, Greaves, Brady etc and loads of other great players to pick from.

Any list has to include Totti.

Wrong. Who is Totti getting in over?

As an attacking midfielder he is not getting in over Maradona, Platini, Baggio and older generation players such as Meazza and Rivera.

As a striker he is not getting in over Van Basten, Del Piero, R9, Batistuta, Riva. Personally he also wouldn't get in over Vieri and Weah on pure talent.

Only reason people say Totti is longevity. He was never better than any of the above mentioned in their prime Serie A years.

Buffon
Cafu Nesta Baresi Maldini Brehme
Matthaus Davids
Maradona
Ronaldo Baggio
Rate van Basten higher but see Baggio as a cleaner fit in this formation. Also, either Maradona or Platini for me.

FC GOAT

Dida
Cafu, Baresi, Nesta, Maldini
Rijkaard
Seedorf, Gullit
Zidane
Maradona, Ronaldo (real one, not that no7 twat)

Dida- yes, Buffon is better but i liked Dida's style very much
Cafu. RB Goat
Maldini. GOAT defender in general
Baresi. Second best DC of all time.
Nesta. Best DC in his generation
Rijkaard. GOAT dmc
Gullit. GOAT all-around player
Seedorf. World class complete midfielder
Zidane. Maybe best midfielder of all time.
Maradona. Second best player of all time
Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima. THE GOAT.

Ah, nostalgia.
Dida was full of howlers

It's very difficult task on any period, less as a whole, for leaving fellas like Meazza, Sivori, Suarez, Rivera, Fachetti and so many when we focus only in the 80's and later.

In any case what it's trully extraordinary it's that from Orsi to Sivori, from Platini to Diego, from Baggio to Zidane, from R9 to Cris, thay have achieved to at least most of the best Magicians play at least a year there...just the ammount of extraordinary 10's they enjopyed it's staggering.
Spain also it's a strong candidate in such remark.

You are certainly betraying your nick by trying to be a bit too much pragmatic :)

I don't know as much about serie a as others.

God there’s just an absolute insane amount of talent in these teams… but others have been right to point out, Zirkzee has to feature in any serious list.

But seriously, having watched Ronaldo in the flesh at Inter, R9 belongs in every list regardless of the fact he didn’t play that many matches. He was a god

Will only go with players I saw regularly.

Buffon
Zanetti Nesta Cannavaro Maldini
Pirlo
Nedved Zidane
Kaka
Ronaldo Batistuta

This. Though R9 not R7. Also Cafu over Zanetti. Cafu, imo, is the best RB of the twentieth century. Maradona for Kaka.

Ronaldinho
doesn't get in based on his performances which declined massively after the Barca move. Would be in La Liga all time (though that's an even harder one).

If we go back to the 80s or further, I mean Maradona has to be there (in this one) and also many other players push some of the more recent one's out.

Ok so 1996 to now

Any team without Maradona shows it.

Yet to be fair with any league it should be done within periods to the very least, most of this stuff not few times will leave out on any league fellas like Charlton, Best, Puskas, Di Stefano, Sivori, Luis Suarez (the spanniard)...as big names and also not few times those with lesser names but have some of the biggest records.

I think there is a bit of revisionism here. I agree that Ronaldo was incredible at his peak. But he did only play 68 games, and in his best season he didn't win the league. He wasn't top scorer (Bierhoff scored more. and Baggio also only scored a couple fewer playing for Bologna).

I don't see how he can be in ahead of Maradona and Van Basten, who both equally had the wow factor, but who played more and who actually won multiple titles for their teams.

Buffon

I think that team has the right amount of physicality and ability, a good mix. So much physicality, but yet so many players comfortable on the ball. The Baggio/Maradona link up around arguably the best 9 of all time! The midfield would be absolutely impervious too.

I’m know Buffon is an all time great, but so many goalies in with a shout if he wasn’t there. Personally I loved Walter Zenga when I was a kid, but also loved Angelo Peruzzi, Francesco Toldo, Gianluca Pagliuca, Sebastian Rossi…..surely the early 90s to mid 2000s was best era of goalkeepers ever.

People will say you're just an old man shouting at clouds if you claim football isn't what it used to be, but look at some of the fecking names in this thread. And most of them were around at the same time!

You can't tell me it's just nostalgia.
