A furious Sven-Göran Eriksson gave Wayne Rooney a half-time dressing down in front of his England team-mates during their ill-fated match in Madrid.
The normally unflappable Swede was angry with Rooney's persistent and petulant fouling in Wednesday's friendly against Spain. He was even more annoyed at the teenager's reaction to being substituted. Rooney said: 'feck off, feck off,' towards the coach and flung to the ground the black armband worn in memory of Emlyn Hughes and Keith Weller before leaving the field without acknowledging his replacement, Alan Smith.
Eriksson tore into Rooney in the dressing room, slammed a door and demanded - and got - an apology from the player to himself and to Smith. None of this was mentioned in the official version of events presented to the media after the game.
According to a Football Association source Eriksson was determined to take a firm stance because he knew a line had been crossed. 'This was as angry as Sven has been,' he said. 'He was incensed.'
Eriksson said: 'I did not like what I saw and it is bad for England. Even if you do not agree to being substituted, you have to accept it if you are a professional. I had to calm the team down at half-time, telling them to be aggressive without being stupid. Rooney will behave himself in future. I'm not worried about that.'
Eriksson's reaction contrasted with that of Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney's manager at Manchester United, who told Observer Sport that he had spoken to the FA about his player. 'There's no way Rooney intentionally tried to dishonour either player [Hughes or Weller],' he said. 'A lot of players show anger when they get substituted.'
Ferguson spoke to Rooney after his return from Madrid. 'He'll have his ups and downs because he has a bad temper,' he said. 'But look at my best players at the club, look at Bruce, Robson, Keane, Cantona, Hughes, Ince - they all had a bit of anger about them. We have to make sure it does not affect his performance.'
Rooney's one flaw was a lack of maturity, said Ferguson. 'But what 19-year-old has maturity? What were you like at 19, what was I like? Jesus Christ, I was trying to start a workers' revolution in Glasgow. My mother thought I was a communist. She was down on her knees praying every night. Then I got the ultimate threat - my granny spoke to me. She said, "Mammy thinks you're a bloody communist."
'I'll be shocked if I don't do the business with that boy. I'll be totally amazed.'
