Inspired by @Mali_Zeus 's posts in the Bluemoon meltdown thread, I was thinking about how fun it is when you don't support who your parents support.

It seems to be a bit of a theme in my family to disappoint your dad when it comes to football. My Grandad is an Everton fan, my Dad a Liverpool fan and I'm a United fan. Literally the only reason I am is down to my uncle. He got my sister supporting United to the point whereby her (and one of my oldest friends from across the road) had United shirts when I was two/three/four. Obviously when you're very young you want what your siblings have so I only wanted a United shirt whether it was a birthday/Christmas or just generally being a bit spoilt and getting a gift off them.

Before my dad even knew I was into football I was a United fan. Still remember very clearly I had a tantrum because my mum threw out my sisters black away shirt when it was too small for her (the great one that Cantona kicked the Palace fan in) and the very next day she took me to Old Trafford for the first time and I came home with my first United shirt (94/96 home shirt with Giggs #11 on the back).

My dad tried his damned hardest over the next few years to turn me into a Liverpool fan. There's an old picture of me which I found the other day (which I won't post on here) stood below the This is Anfield sign wearing a Liverpool shirt because they took me and my sister to Anfield when Patrick Berger signed and I ended up on Sky Sports news that night with him signing my back (thankfully no footage of that has seemingly survived on the internet) but in reality I just wanted football shirts when I was a kid. The Class of 92 (and Cantona + Schmeichel) were too big as heroes in my mind by the time they started winning games that I was never gonna change and my dad has never forgiven me for it I don't think. He got my sister back, and the guy across the road also ended up a Liverpool fan too (I'll never understand why) but not me and bloody hell am I glad.

Also growing up I had lots of Barça shirts (thanks to Ronaldo then Rivaldo and Ronaldinho being heroes) but my dad has always had a thing for Real.

Going off the family history I'll be lucky if I ever have a kid that they don't turn into a City fan.

What about you guys and gals?

(P.S. I was bloody lucky as a kid to have so many shirts, properly spoilt, though absolutely grateful)

Dads a United fan, brothers too. Mum "supports Liverpool" because she thinks it's funny, can't name a single player aside from Gerrard though and asked what his full name is usually says "Gerrard something, Gerrard Lampard?" Or something equally as daft.

My dads got 3 sisters who were all United fans too thanks to Georgie Best and when my Nan went up to Manchester in the 60's she promised a souvineer so went to the United shop and, horrified by the prices, left with some socks, a flag and some stickers stuffed up her top. In her words "I'd never sweated so much in my life and for some reason when I was walking past the counter and accidently caught the shop assistants eye I shouted "NO I COUKDNT FIND ANYTHING I WANTED TO BUY THANKYOU" to which they looked at her like she was a mentsl patient.

My dad used to watch liverpool games a lot, but when he know I fallen in love with United, he switch watching United with me since then. My sister though still supports Liverpool but she is not a hardcore fan.

My girlfriend's dad is a liverpool fan too, making it hard for me to watch any games with him. Tough luck.

Mum supported United knew everything there was to know about the club and in football in general she would argue the nuances of any side with the best of them and more often than not won the argument.
Dad supported villa god love him lol
So I was nailed on to be a united fan my first memory was being dressed in red and white with a red and white rosette with a tinfoil cup in the middle for the 1979 facup final.I'm sure there are photos of that somewhere in the house.

Mum supports United knows everything about them she grew up watching the the 1992 generation, Cantona's her favourite. She used to write letters about them to my Dad whilst he was in Belgium she was that obsessed, not as avid a watcher now. Reckons you should've got rid of Rooney in 2010 or whenever it was he had his first tantrum. Thought Fergie mellowed to much.
Uncles support United apart from 1 Liverpool supporter. Dad just supports whoevers winning so he doesnt count. Brothers a Chelsea fan the annoying cuntface.

My Dad was a Wednesday supporter. He used always talk about Rimmer scoring twice in the 1935 FA Cup final.

My maternal granddad is the only one in my family who watched football and he supported United. My family are all gaa-heads. Have 3 brothers who are all sort of fair weather fans. Used to all support United but then all went to Chelsea. Now one is a Newcastle fan since he moved there and the other two are still sort of Chelsea although one of them is really just an ABU and the other one just doesn't really care.

Parents, none. Mom wants United to do well because that makes me and my brother happy. Dad would say Arsenal (because of Albert Guðmundssson) if he had to pick but he doesn't follow football and isn't bothered. His dad would say the same (he was very good friends with Albert). My other grandad watches football every weekend but he does so for the enjoyment of it. He follows an Icelandic team.

My mom says she "supports" Flamengo because her entire family supports them, but in reality she hates football.

My dad and his side of the family support Vasco da Gama (growing up he took me to see them often so I also consider them my Brazilian team).

One of my cousins randomly supports Chelsea while another cousin constantly switches between European clubs (I think he's a City "supporter" at the moment ).

Both parents hate football
This.

Actually I shouldn't say hate. Just utter disinterest for it. 2 brothers support Milan and Arsenal respectively. Our parents ask us whether we get any money from the teams for supporting them and arguing football every weekend

I'll just quote my post from Bluemoon thread wtih few additions:

I'm a Dinamo fan, my dad is a Hajduk fan (biggest and fiercest Croatian derby). I love United he likes Liverpool.
My dad didnt pressure me to be a Hajduk fan when I was a kid, so when I started school one of the 1st words I heard there was Dinamo so from then on I was a Dinamo fan (although at that time I didnt even watch football :) ). He regrets it now just as your dad and he is always on about how in fact deep down I'm a Hajduk fan cause him and his dad, my late grandad were Hajduk fans. But he knows you dont change few things in your life and favorite football club is one of them.

He buys my baby girl lots of Hajduk stuff but she's a girl and probably will hate football so I dont care. If I'll have a son that will be another story. He'll be a Dinamo fan since the day he will be born. :D Oh and I'll probably buy him One United membership too. :D
my baby girl has a nice 'I love United' hoody which I bought in Manchester and she looks great in it. Bought a wee United shirt for my little niece too.

Every derby we watched it was an intense atmosphere, sometimes to the point where we would yell at each other. Problem is we dont get along in any sports basically cause he supports every team from Split and I support every team from Zagreb whatever the sport is. Good thing is all other sports dont really matter anymore.

Now I dont watch Dinamo anymore, he doesnt watch Hajduk that much so we dont argue and we sort of get along in our hatred of Mamić (Dinamo's boss and a bastard) but on the other hand I hate Hajduk's non stop whining but dont mention it to him. :)

Not only he's a Hajduk fan, my whole family supports it. My both late grandads were Hajduk fans, my mum likes Hajduk, so does my aunt, her sister. My sister likes it just in spite to me but if nothing none of them like football that much, my mum hates it. My wife just likes to irritate me so when for instance United is playing or NT or Dinamo and they concede she calmly asks: -So your guys conceded a goal - cause she knows I'm nervous and she enjoys it. :)

Most of my family likes or loves Hajduk cause we're all from Dalmatia and in Dalmatia Hajduk is law. My dad was born in Split so there wasnt any other team. I was born in Zagreb but if dad had put any effort in my education about football so to say I could have easily be a Hajduk fan right now. He didnt, he let me choose a team and the rest is history.

Only one from my family who's a Dinamo fan is my uncle, aunt's husband. Best thing is his parents are from Dalmatia too but just like me, he was born in Zagreb and was a Dinamo fan from an early age so we try to stick to each other when it's about football. :)

As for United, I think it was vice versa, he started to support Liverpool just to annoy me. :D But he's no avid Liverpool fan or sthing. He hates United though. :) So another fun story there.

Only matter in which me and my dad get along is the national team.

My dad supported Coventry back in the day. Doesn't care for them now or any football team, he just enjoys watching any match these days, he is more into rugby now. He'd watch Uniteds results and games alright thanks to my interest.

My Mam was all about the Irish, so had stints supporting David O'Learys Leeds and Villa. She was also mad into rugby.
