What the league table actually looks like

City beating Palace has made them potentially leaders if they win their game in hand. We need to win back our next game and trigger some winning form or we will struggle now.
I say that but we face Fulham while City faces Aston Villa, so hopefully a Graelish masterclass can make them lose some pts.

The draw was not very good but could turn out to be alright in the long run, we need to wait a bit more to see that out.

Our problem in the first half of the season was the games against the big 6 + Leicester, where we won only 4 points from 18 possible. By contrast, if we beat Fulham, we'll have conquered 36 points from 39 possible against the other teams.

So if we maintain this level in the second half against those teams and improve our performances against the top, we'll be good. Let's say, 10 points against the top teams (i'm confident we can beat Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester at least), and again 36 points from the other teams, thats 46 points in the second half, which would put us to finish the season with 86 points.

I dont think any team will finish with more than 90 points, so we'll be in the fight until the end.

Anyone else feel like this City improved form is coming at the right time for us? They’re beating teams they’d beat anyway right now and we need them fired up for the trip to Anfield. Hoping of course they dip later too

My only concern about Chelsea is that it's the second biggest bogey ground for us and need to actually find a performance at Arsenal because last two seasons our performances there have been pretty awful to be honest

That is a fair point but also worry they could be flowing with confidence and just pull away from the pack if they really outlclass the scousers in this game which we definitely don't want to happen

Fair enough. I guess I’m hoping they also conveniently dip at the right time too  sadly they probably have the squad for fixture congestion

Should it not be games in hand from most games played? (19) So we should have an * next to us (as edited) or am I looking at it the wrong way.

The game week has begun so I’ll give it chance to play out as it’ll probably even it’s self out following this round of matches.

80 odd should win it. Im not buying this City reveival just yet, theyve only beaten 2 of the top 10 as it stands and their recent run is against average opposition, plus Southampton who could easily have got a draw imo.
Absolutyely this. We've not staked a claim on anything and now KDB is out we will see how City react. Klopp is going to kick his boys up the arse too and they will respond too. Utd might just be able to pick up a title whilst others are flailing.

I think the table maybe finally starting to settle down, the bottom 3 are really starting to fall adrift and it seems the top 4 have a little wiggle room, of which United seem to be taking advantage of worryingly.

I think we will end up third or fourth. But that depends on us winning games we should win. No one expected us to lose at home to Sheffield United either.

Great to have some daylight between us and the Scousers. Would be great if City slipped up to leave the derby interesting.

To think we're only 7 wins from last season final points tally. If we can get to 60 points before match day 30, I think we'll be a shoe in for top 3.

I do think we'll be well short of City come the end of the campaign and hopefully Leicester and one of Villa or Everton can round out top 4.

Red Card for Casemiro!
And just like that, we're back into a top four race from a title challenge. Defence is poor, forwards can't score, errors in management decisions - we have a long way to go to compete with the likes of City if they maintain consistency.

It's still progress, mind you.

Don't think anyone expected us to be second at this stage.
So it's definitely progress.

It also owes a lot to the poor start side like Liverpool and maybe even Chelsea have had too.
Obviously there’s a lot more context than “we’re joint second, ergo - progress”.

We were the joint third best team in the league last year, and if anyone really believes we’re ahead of a full strength Liverpool team, I’d suggest they need their heads checking.

Hence why all should wait until we’re much closer to the end of the season.

we had a poor start ourselves to be fair. and are in poor form now. Table doesn't lie as they say, at least not at the end of the season.

A position in the league after 24 games aint “definite” progress, let’s see where we end up after 38.
Unless I'm mistaken, we are 12 points better off at this stage than we were last season...I'd say that's progress wouldn't you??

It will be progress if our overall points tally is higher than last year (66). However if we finished on 70 points for example but in 5th place it certainly can't be classed as that.

Will be a tough few months ahead, need to find our form again.

Agreed,

But currently we are essentially four games (12 points) ahead of where we were last season, which shows progress. 8 more wins would give us 70 points which is more than enough this season for top four, and probably enough to consolidate a distant second, personally I think a points tally of 75 + is easily achievable.

Can't ignore the fact that part of this progress in terms of standings is that one of the two teams that set the bar in recent years has dropped off.

Points would probably mean more.

Not when we are 12 points better off than we were last season!

Yes Liverpool have dropped off, but Leicester, Spurs, Chelsea, City all have equal or more points this season than at the same stage last season.

The praise for Bielsa is over the top at times but looking at that in the context of a newly promoted side 32 points with 15 games to go is a great effort.

Crazy to think how close Chelsea have got to us considering just a few weeks ago they were close to 15 points behind.

Indeed, now we have to wait until the end of the season to see how much we actually get. Our crap performances until February last season means that up till now, it was easier to pick up points in 2020/21 compared with 2019/20.
