We're in a situation where we have to get this transfer window perfect, this transfer window is going to be the foundation of our rebuild for our future years. I'm curious to see the signings that everyone thinks are the perfect sign of progress. Maybe also a thread to look back on after the window as well.

Getting rid of Martial Pogba Lingard Rashford (not likely I know) Henderson Cavani Williams Matic Tuanzebe Telles Donny Mata and Pereira. AWB can go too if he’s not happy. That should get us the funds to get 3 more starters and free up a crazy amount off the wage bill. It should literally be halved. Over the next few windows I’d like to see

Rice or Tchouaméni for DM
Anthony for RW
Darwin for ST
Playmaking but pressing box to box midfielder like Bellingham
Creative intense and energetic RB and LB
World class potential youngish CB
Phasing out DDG for future world class GK who is commanding brave and good with his feet.

Paul Mitchell and whatever staff he needs

Some world class coaches with ETH hopefully

That should see us well on our way.

In a year or two be something like

Ddg
Rb Varane Young Cb Lb
Tchouaméni
Bellingham
Antony Bruno Sancho
Darwin

This transfer window is also about getting the right players out of the club, so that the club/team can move forward without all this noise and off-field problems.
Lots of players will leave due to their contract is up. A few will be sold.
A few youngsters to be promoted, and I think we will sign more than the usual three. What names / who they are, I really don't care. As long as they fit the profile of what Erik ten Hag wants to build the team around.

We will need at least 3 summer windows for the rebuild.

This summer: CM/DM, CB, RB/LB, WF/FW (150-200m)

Next summer: LB/RB, CM/DM, FW, AM (150-200m)

Summer after next summer: more backups who fit our system, maybe some first team players to rectify our remaining issues (100m+)

We will need to have large enough squad with right type of players to compete for all fronts

De Gea
new RB new CB Varane new LB
new DM new DM/CM
new WF new AM
Sancho
Ronaldo/new FW

Sub: VDB (AM), Fred (DM/CM), Lindelof (CB), Garner (DM/CM), Garnacho (WF), Mejbri (AM), Fernandez (RB), new CB, new RB, new FW/WF, Grant/Heaton (GK)
So basically 11 new signings, and assuming we could promote 4 new youngster to first team (Garnacho, Mejbri, Garner, Fernandez), which makes it like 15 new additions to our squad.

Getting rid of some of the players we need to sell and getting Ten Hag at least 3 of his targets and those targets eventually being successful here.

So many of our signings eventually fail and stopping that trend is key to reversing our fortunes. You look at our rivals, almost every one of their signings is a success. You look at us, we pay bigger money and sign the media friendly names and we end up with flops.

This will not be a perfect transfer window as most players wouldn't want to join us (no CL football) and our budget will be spread thin. I'd say a good transfer window would be the following

Ins: Raum, timber, kamara, neves, diaby, nkunku

Outs: henderson (buy back clause),Telles, McT, Martial, lingard, cavani, pogba, cavani, mata, matic, bailly, jones

Pretty much this, though AVB should leave whether he is happy or not. There is more value in terms of transfer fees for the players in our squad who need to be sold than people realise. See Dan James for 26m last summer.

This summer it is mission critical that we sign a midfielder, we need two but most definitely we need to but at least 1. Same with Right back, we should be selling AVB, Dalot and Telles, 50m for those three which is plenty to buy two full backs. Liverpools full backs cost a total of 8m quid!

We also need two attackers this summer. While a CB would also be good, I think we could manage with current options for now if we had two good full backs and a proper midfield. Our current full backs and midfield leaves our CBs very exposed.

So at least 4 players this summer please and clear out all those you listed. Promote Laird, can't be any worse than Dalot surely.

Sign those and you're gold :D

Speaking seriously, the most pressing needs are starting caliber RWB, LWB, two CMs. A quality backup forward, better if can cover multiple roles, and maybe a pacey CB if Varane really is broken. Not sure it's realistic though

If we’re serious about this rebuild and getting behind ETH, then we really need to focus on shipping out those who don’t fit into future plans or simply need a fresh start. A few key acquisitions (CM/ST/WB) and fill the gaps with the academy.

Sell rashford 45mil - buy nkunku or similar (55mil) - net 10mil.
Lingard leaves
Sell martial 20mil - get Antony or similar (40mil) - 20mil net.
Sell mata (3mil) get Eriksen on a free + 3mil
Sell matic (5mil) get Tchouameni or similar (60mil) net 55mil
Pogba leaves - get ward prowse or similar (45mil)
Cavani leaves - get Nunez or similar (55mil)
Jones/Bailey (25mil for both) timber & another cb. (50mil) net 25 mil
Awb leaves 25mil get spence (12mil) + 13mil
Telles leaves (12mil) get malacia (20mil) net 8mil

So around the 200mil mark net spend. Could maybe recoupe some more of that in sales. The likes of henderson could make some money back.

That’s a muppets dream summer.

Bring back garner and donny and give Hannibal and garnacho some games the first team.

Personally I think Shaw, Maguire, Rashford and Bruno need to pay for the clusterfeck that has been this season and their attitudes. I know they won't, though because they still have some credit in the bank so if I am Murtough I am sacrificing the next in line and that is the likes of Williams, Teles, Dalot, AWB, Bailly, Henderson and Tuanzebe. This gives me about £80m to £90m.

If the Glazers are serious about a £200m budget and if can supplement it with £90m from sales then we can transform the team. The defence needs better ball players who can progress play from deep so that means a new RB, CB and back up LB to challenge Shaw. My own personal preferences would be:
Timber RB £45m
Torres CB £60m
LB £20m

Ideally in midfield we would need two signings; a DM and a starting CM but given that we will also need a forward I think we can trust Fred and Garner for the CM role until next season at least. I expect Garner to initially struggle as he gets to grips with first team football so I will start the season with Fred and use Garner in the EL and League Cup. Tchouameni is the dream signing but we could be beaten to his signature by more attractive teams so the recruitment team has to come up with someone in the £40m - £50m bracket but with a strong combination of defensive and passing attributes.

In attack we need someone more versatile who also provides a goal threat because in some games we're giing to need that player to cover for Cristano but when Cristiano plays we need that player outwide. The only one I can think of with the skillset to play such a role is Nkuku.

In essence, a successful window for me is one which sees us get rid of the dross, reduce the importance of the mentally weak players and improve our central solidity and ability to progress the ball from deep.

Are we talking a realistic perfect window or going full muppet mode window ? I mean a perfect realistic one would see Mazraoui, Gvardiol, Malacia, Kamara, Antony and Nkunku coming in along with Laird, Mengi, Garner, Mejbri and Shoretire coming up then Henderson, Dalot, AWB, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Jones, Telles, Matic, Pereira, Pogba, Mata, Lingard and Martial all being sold/moved on.

If I’m going full muppet mode I’d want Rice instead of Kamara along with De Jong or Bellingham also coming in and another striker but also all of the names I mentioned also coming in as well as there’s so many holes in the squad that need to be addressed.

Ten Hag appears to be nowhere near as interested as giving youth a chance as people seem to think. I suspect people will be very disappointed at the senior players he decides to keep and the academy players he refuses to use. Realistically we can only sign 3 or 4 players max and butchering the squad simply won’t happen.

Making clever established signings on the cheap like Mazroaui, Gravenberch, Zakaria, Kessie, Sule and Kamara would help. However, if it doesn't cost more than 50m, we either don't rate them or not interested and they go to Juventus, Atleti, Bayern, Barca, Dortmund, etc. unopposed.

GK - not fussed

LB - An energetic, pacey attacking left back. Cucurella fits the mould, but just one example. He's also quite versatile and can fill various positions.
CB - ideally left footed, pacey, good in the air. Lower priority than other positions, so I'd be content with a young player who would be content to start on the bench initially, and ready to take their chances when our first choice are injured or out of form again with a view to becoming first choice. Salisu from Southampton looks good.
RB - complicated. Laird waiting in the wings but not ready, Williams potentially as a backup covering both flanks, Dalot and AWB both still young and have some potential, maybe, but a decison needs to be made, get rid of those the manager doesn't see potential in, bring in a quality RB, or another potential top talent like Livramento or Spence. I can see this being position being unchanged by the start of next season.

CM - Rice, Neves, De Jong, Tchouaméni, we need one of these at least. De Jong would be my preference, I love that style of player and its something United have lacked for several years, and ETH could build the midfield around him. Ideally two CMs, but I think one is likely with VdB being part of the squad, Fred and McTominay playing bit-part roles, possibly Garner in the squad, and possibly Hannibal although the latter may be used in more advanced positions. If one or two of the latter go out on loan, then maybe bring in one of the Ajax CMs or another youngster specialist DM for squad depth, with a view to phasing out McTominay the next summer.

AM - possibly the only place we're okay, with Bruno, backed up by VdB, Hannibal, Shoretire. The bigger question is whether we'll play with a number 10 most of the time, or whether we'll prefer a 6 and 2 8s.

LW - Another position we're OK in for a while. Sancho should be an important part of the new manager's plans, with Elanga and Rashford involved.

RW - We absolutely need a specialist in this position, not someone who can merely do a job there. Someone like Raphinha would be ideal but I don't think we'd get him, Antony maybe more realistic.

CF - If Ronaldo leaves we need a top number 9 worthy of leading the line for Manchester United. I fear we'll chase Kane all summer and be rejected, as we're currently a sideways/downward step from Spurs, and Kane doesn't seem to sort to jump ship for the money and he doesn't have time to wait a few years in the hope we become genuine title contenders. I reckon we'll see Bruno as a false 9 at times, perhaps with another 10/false 9 brought in too like Nkunku, and bring in another option who can play the traditional 9 role when needed. Ideally our new setup will identify a young player who can come in and provide competition immediately but has the potential to become top level, but I'm not aware of who and fear we'll end up with a short term backup option like Haller or Calvert-Lewin.

RB: Timber
CB: Torres
CM: Neves
CM: ? Laimer (Tchouameni going elsewhere)
RW: Raphinha
Striker: Nkunku

Would cost at least 300m so is probably unrealistic. But we might get 4 of these players and 2 on free transfer or hidden gems.

The players have been underperforming for the past couple of months. We are better than this, but not by a lot. I think a minimum of 3 new starting players are required to compete for top four. Improved tactics, a proper preseason and a lift of confidence can only do so much for players that either lack technical ability (AWB, Rashford, McTominay) or intensity.

yeah patience is needed, I’d take a few seasons outside the top 3 if it was obvious progression was being made. 3-4 each window would be acceptable. Quite frankly next season I’d be happy with top 4 challenge and a decent cup run.

Still a very large squad. I'd look to sign

  • Aaron Hickey who can play either RB or LB, and is at the right age for development. 12-15m
  • Frenkie de Jong - 70m
  • Christian Eriksen - free

Total gross spend; Roughly 180-190m.

Dalot - Maguire - Timber - Hickey
Garner
McTominay - Donny

Another CM that fits ETH’s system, maybe Laimer
Torres
Timber

that’s probably £250m + though. Would require significant outgoing sales, I would think.

While we need a lot of players to rebuild our squad, I still believe we need to focus on quality rather than quantity.

  • Tchouameni - 50 mill. An absolute machine of a midfielder that is on the verge of becoming a world-class player.
  • De Jong - 70 mill. A proper DM that fits perfectly into ETH style football and can finally fill the gaping hole that has existed since we lost Carrick.
  • Gvardiol - 50 mill. Similarly to Tchouameni, he is on the verge of breaking into a world-class player. Solid defensively and physically, left footed and comfortable on the ball.
  • Mazraoui - free. If we can hijack him from Bayern he would be a great attacking RB.

Sign a new contract with Pogba, play him as a LCM and put Bruno on the wing.

De Gea
Mazraoui - Varane - Gvardiol - Shaw
Tchouameni - De Jong - Pogba
Bruno - Ronaldo - Sancho

This doesn't look bad at all, even though 170 mil is quite the budget. Added to that, if we keep Pogba, he'll ask for a sign on bonus and that's another 20-30 mil right there.

I think we get 25 mil for AWB and 30 for Martial. That should either give us an extra transfer (unlikely to get 5 new players in though) or reduce the 170 mil spent.

In regards to the system, I think the front 3 can play fluid, with Bruno dropping more towards the 10 at times and Sancho being pushed a bit more towards a false 9 by Pogba playing further up the field.

Perfection is laregely subjective.

For me getting the right profile of player is the most important. The manager needs to define that profile without interference. So if he says we need two midfielders who are young, athletic and are not the finished article, an aged professional to slot in at the back and a late 20's forward to give some development space for Hugill and McNeill, then fine with me.

I think we will see around 8 players go out of the club and we will see between 6-8 come in

2x Permanent Priority signings
1x Free Transfer
3x U 23's to step up

Whatever is the process, if it stops some of the toxicity in our fan base, then no bad thing.

I think we won't make many signings. Alot of players will leave but few will come in...

Something in my gut makes me feel like we need to prioritize LB over RB this window. I think Dalot could be first choice for ETH at RB but maybe I just need to drop a deuce.
