Manchester United are continuing their attempt to sign Paolo Di Canio, with reports stating that they have increased their bid for the West Ham United striker.
The Premiership champions are still trying to thrash out a deal for Di Canio after having an initial offer of £2million turned down by the Hammers board.
Sir Alex Ferguson is under pressure to pay an extra £1m for the 33-year-old after receiving official confirmation of West Ham's rejection via fax on Monday.
Ferguson has made Di Canio his number one transfer target, but knows he has time on his side as the Champions League deadline is not until the end of the month.
But West Ham boss Glenn Roeder is looking for a speedy conclusion to the wrangle, saying: "I know this is upsetting for our fans. it has gone on too long. I want it laid to rest as soon as possible."
It looks increasingly unlikely that Dwight Yorke will be used in any swap for the former Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday star, as West Ham would not be able to afford the extra £4m in a player-plus-cash deal.
