This is a table of all our goal scorers last season.
RankPlayerGoals
1=Benjamin Šeško12
1=Bryan Mbeumo12
3Matheus Cunha10
4=Bruno Fernandes9
4=Casemiro9
6Patrick Dorgu4
7Mason Mount3
8=Harry Maguire2
8=Joshua Zirkzee2
8=Amad Diallo2
11=Luke Shaw1
11=Diogo Dalot1
11=Kobbie Mainoo1
11=Matthijs de Ligt1

1. It's not that many goals.
2. Casemiro is leaving, he also scored some quite important goals.

Where we do we expect the rest of the goals to come from? Diallo may contribute a bit more, I don't see anything from Zirkzee.

After our immediate front 4 - we've got no goals in the team. I think it's something we haven't really addressed.

Mainoo could get 5. Possibly similar from Santos and Tielemans. If Mount is available I'd expect him to score a few more. Bruno would've scored closer to 15 if he hadn't spent half the season playing a deeper role.

With the extra games Sesko, Cunha, Mbuemo could all get to 15. Diallo capable of getting 10.

Rashford, Lacey, Tynan may chip in

You'd like to think Sesko would improve after a year of adaptation and he even did pretty well in his first season.

That being said I would like us to melt Zirkzee down to glue and buy another striker/forward option.

There’s every chance those numbers improve across the board but yeah, we may not have enough goals in our side.

The forwards should all get 4 or 5 more goals imo, Amad needs to get towards double figures especially if he gets a lot of game time, Dorgu if he plays forward should get towards double figures too

Firstly, only 2 teams scored more than us last season. Arsenal scored 2 more goals, City scored 8 more. So lets not make out we're awful.

But to the main point - goals scored by individuals is a function of the overall performance of the team. If the team plays consistently throughout the season, each of those top 10 players will score 1 or 2 goals more each, which is how you get your goalscoring from "good" to "title challenging". So it's not about trying to shoehorn in some 20 goal striker, its about getting the team to play well overall.

I would expect more goals from Amad and Dorgu (and Zirkzee if he stays)

Tielemans and Rashford (if he stays) will obviously contribute

Sesko should hopefully score more this season, as should Bruno to be honest.

Mbuemo and Cunha can stay around that level.

We'll need a CB (Maguire? De Ligt?) to step up and score from corners/set plays in the absence of Casemiro.

We'll struggle. If Sesko has a period out or either of Cunha/Mbeumo then we'll really struggle. We don't have many goalscorers really and even our main ones are hardly prolific.

We could do with a few more signings but we're skint so we'll have to hope that someone steps up.

Sesko and Cunha should improve. You cannot have a starting No. 9 who scores 12 goals per season.

Bruno will score more assuming he will play in an advanced role.

And Rashford will score around 10 goals, at least.

Sesko, Mbeumo, Rashford, and Cunha would be our main top 4 goalscorers. Then add Bruno in the list since he takes the penalty and playing in advanced role. I expect Dorgu (if he plays as winger) and Amad to improve their goals.

Then with signing Tielemans, we have also added another playmaker and creativity to the squad which can also improve us in creating chances for our goalscorers to score goals.

Overall, we have enough goalscorers if Rashford stays. We need to add more creativity and more players who can create chances.

Thats a damning figure but lacks context , Sesko participated in 31 games for Man Utd last season and started 18 of them . His return while not great is still ok considering it was his first season in PL and he isn't on penalty duty either.

With half of the season under the Apocalyptic Amorim. We are a good team, it's just we're light in midfield + quality tanks after 2-3 substitutions.

Apparently Zirkzee is now a very good player after his performance against Rosenborg, so I expect he's a guranteed 20+ goals this season

It's not many goals, but there wasn't many games either. Also, you'd expect the forward line to improve further with a better midfield.

Everyone is going to have to step up. Sesko is going to have to hit at least 20 in all comps. Cunha needs to have a whole season like the second half of last season. Mbeumo needs to do the same but for his first half. Bruno needs to start scoring more goals from open play in the 10. Dorgu and Amad will have to chip in. Tielemans, Santos, and whoever else we bring in will have to contribute. Mount is a goal threat when he plays. Hopefully we'll have a new back up striker who will have to chip in here and there. And then you get what you get from the defenders. We were the third top scorers in the league last season and only scored two less than Arsenal, we'll be fine.

I actually worry more about how many we concede. Our forwards as well as all our midfield have showed they have a decent nose for goals before, so I think we will actually be one of the higher scoring sides in the league. Instead of it all coming from a single source it will be more spread out over the team which also means injuries will be less detrimental to our scoring.

Could you share your thoughts as to why you think those numbers will simply increase this season?

I fear it goes the other way: Cunha and Fernandes have played World Cup and that may have an impact, v possibly early season. I think the league will be more competitive than last season. And we haven't added real, genuine goal-threat during the summer. Not so far anyway,

So I would be interested in why you feel we may improve, because I don't see that right now...

The only difference is the loss of Casemiro. So we lose 9 goals there sure, but I'd expect Sesko and Bruno to pick a few more each than last season and Rashford (if he does stay) will also grab a few.

It's not like we've sold our two top scorers and replaced them with defenders, we've got a high scoring team here and I have no worries.

Rashford will score a few. We need to replace Zirkzee with someone with at least a modicum of end product.

I’d like to see one of the forwards on our roster given pens. Forwards tend to go on runs when they score. Sesko with 5 pens could lead to him scoring an extra ten goals overall.

We scored 69 league goals last season. Not great by any means, but only two teams scored more than us in the league at 71 (Arsenal) and 77 (Man City).

In all comps, the worst manager alive got us booted out as early as possible, so we ended with 72 in 40 games. Averages to what, 1.8 per game?

I expect Cunha, Mbeumo, and Sesko to all achieve double figure stats again. Amad will hopefully be a lot better than he was last season, and Rashford even at his worst delivers G/As if he’s in the side.

In a vacuum we lose Casemiro’s goal threat but these things always fix themselves.

It's reasonable to expect the young Sesko to kick on and I actually think all our wide players have the capacity to score a lot more. They've shown that in this league, so it's not blind hope.

  • Amad just had a very low scoring season (against his previous trajectory) but picked up in the world cup. I always say he's hardworking but needs management to pressure him to be more of a game changer (similar to Mowbray's influence) - he almost seems too happy to be one of the team. He can be so much better. And even if he doesn't hit the dizzying heights I expect him to, it's very unlikely that he'll not improve markedly on last season in terms of output.
  • Mbeumo dipped badly after AFCON, I think he'll pick up again as long as we find a way to play him like a wide forward (a bit closer to goal and on the end of passes from Tielemans and Bruno) rather than a pure winger expected to beat multiple defenders.
  • Cunha picked up late, continued into the world cup, and I expect him to continue on that trend.
  • Dorgu, while I'm not sure about him as a wide player, surprisingly grabs a few goals, so avoiding a long term injury like last season, should post higher numbers.
If Bruno keeps up his form, that would be great.
We're losing Casemiro's magnetic heading nous, but if we control games better with the profiles of midfielders we're getting, the front players will have more opportunities to score.
Youri is no slouch when it comes to goal scoring either.

Most starting 9s take penalties too. If he'd taken 6 pens suddenly he's on 18 goals in 31 games/18 starts.... p.s. he should 100% be taking them

Sesko is well on his way to developing into a 20 league goals a season striker, maybe not this season but next. He also doesn’t take penalties which skews his stats somewhat.

Big responsibility on Cunha and Mbuemo, also amad and likely Rashford.

I think cunha and Mbuemo will likely have similar season adjusted for more games, sesko will hopefully carry on his sexond half of the season form under carrick and then we are banking on amad or Rashford/new signing to have a much better season to get to where we were last year.

Remember, our form under carrick was title winning, all we need to adjust for is the increased gameload and hopefully no drop off from Bruno.

This is discussed every year and every year United fans are happy with the options we have thinking that x player will score a few more. The problem is that we never get more than 70 and generally its in the 60's. For a renowned attacking team its pathetic.
We need goals in the 80's to get to second or first. Maybe 90's if City or another team start doing a madness.
But generally over the last 13 years we have needed 10-20 more goals.
I'd add Mateta and keep Rashford. That might get us the extra 10/15 we need. Controversial about Rashord but just saying purely goal scoring wise it will be tough to get an attacker that can get 10-20 goals without spending 100 mill.

Sesko is banging in 20 minimum

I predict Amad gets back to form and scores 10+ in all comps

Amad is a better wingback than winger. I don't see him getting back to form. Sesko could hit 20 - that is definitely where the biggest upside is - Cunha and Mbeumo are both 8-12 goal per season players. Bruno will get a few of course, but if we want to exceed last season's goal tally, we probably need Sesko to explode.

Sesko 16
Mbeumo 15
Cunha 14
Fernandes 10
Amad 6
Dorgu 5
Tielemans 4
Santos 3
Mainoo 3

That’s without any contributions from the defense or the likes of Mount and even Rashford if he stays.

The only player in the league with a better non penalty goal per minutes played ratio was Erling Haaland. Sesko scored a goal from open play every 150 minutes he was on the pitch, for Haaland it was 123.

This is incomplete analysis

Even more important than who scored is: who created the scoring opportunities, i.e. need to look at the list of the top assisters... and you will immediately see the HUGE issue we have:

1. Bruno Fernandes — 21 (club leader by a mile)
2. Patrick Dorgu — 4
3. Diogo Dalot — 3
4. Amad Diallo — 3
5. Bryan Mbeumo — 3
6. Matheus Cunha — 2

Not only we are over-relying on Bruno to create goals, which means as long as opposition blocks him, we are f..ed, but more importantly, it is obvious as a day that we dont create nearly enough goals from the wings, our attacks are narrow.

This is systemic and damning flaw. We need our wingers to create more and we 100% need full backs that provide much more in the attack, something that we also know from eye test but data reconfirms

Agreed, assists are were we need to be concerned, i’m hopeful Tielemans and Santos will provide some and that the wingers, Cunha and Amad I particular will increase theirs but we are sorely lacking from FB. We really do need 2x attacking FBs.

I share your hope on Tielemans and Santos, but whatever they do will still be mostly centrally or relatively narrow towards the middle

We need creative wide wingers who hug the touchline and overlapping fullbacks who feed the attacking players in the box. We do not have those and we will struggle

+1

Expecting more goals from him this season after a promising start.

He’s of course way better than Hojlund but there is a feeling that we’ve been here before. Hojlund didn’t have a great start in his first season but then went on a mini run before injury and there was an expectation he might smash the second season. Oh how wrong that was.

Anyhow, Sesko imo is twice the player and I’d expect him to get more game time and subsequently more goals. He could hit 20, with Europe, cups and if he nails down a starting spot

I think Sesko is going to take off and have his 2nd half of the season form for most of the season. Really think he's going to be a huge player for us. Can see the combination of him and Bruno being a menace for anyone

I can also see a few combinations improving for Mbeumo. Sesko + Mbeumo had some good linkup play at times last season but Mbeumo didnt score from them. Likewise, Bruno was a big creator for Sesko, Casemiro and Cunha's goals but didnt set up many for Mbeumo. Amad was instead Mbeumo's biggest creator of goals. So I can see Bruno and Mbeumo having a better combination this season leading to more assists from Bruno for Mbeumo.

Amad will also need to contribute more going forward in general now he isnt going to play wingback. So hopefully he can get at least 5+ goals

Sesko and Cunha should improve. You cannot have a starting No. 9 who scores 12 goals per season.

Bruno will score more assuming he will play in an advanced role.

And Rashford will score around 10 goals, at least.

The league winners had a starting No 9 who scored 14 league goals.
He played 6 more games than Sesko and outscored him by 3, which also happens to be the same number of penalties he scored.

The Casemiro goals are a concern because those aren't goals that someone else will replace directly.

We'll obviously score more in total due to additional games but I do worry about league goals.

It's easier to talk goals from position than players as people are adding goals for players who would just be taking each others minutes.

So striker position, and attacking midfield should improve the tally. I'm doubtful any others will.
