Which 2 midfielders would you prefer we sign ?

Baleba and Guimaraes offer good balance, along with another to replace Ugarte.

Anderson (only saw him against us) didn't look good enough technically. Mentality speaking he was top top.
Wharton (only saw him against us) looked like a boy next to Casemiro, bossed him.
Tonali, not seen enough of him.

I still reckon we need three midfielders this summer with one maybe being a squad player that's a bit older and without a massive transfer fee.

I've always been impressed by Wharton whenever I've watched him.

Anderson/Tonali + Wharton + Baleba/Mateus would be a fantastic midfield rebuild.
Will just take either of first two and Wharton, mind you I'm also a big fan of Fernandes from West Ham as well

One of Guimares or Tonali and one of Froholdt or Hjulmand would be great.

Simple. A 70m player who can replace Casemiro instantly. Sell Ugarte and buy another 30-40m player who can backup the 1st player, as well as partnering with him for a bus-parking mode. Then buy, or promote, a 3rd junior player at 20-30m, sort of backuping up Minoee. We can possibly take a money saving option to sell Mount first before acquiring the 3rd player.

Simple. Yet you’ve suggested no names at all.

Arguably the most consistent midfielder in the PL this season has been James Garner. He is adored at Everton and recently signed a new deal but bringing him back would be great, the lad has developed into an outstanding player.

Anderson, by all reports, is set to sign for Manchester City. He is an obvious high level talent and would make any "if we could sign anyone..." list but I'd still try for him until the door is firmly closed.

Wharton is steady but nothing special and lacks the drive and presence of some of the others mentioned. Good passer and decent in the tackle but I would prefer Sandro Tonali. He has the drive and box-to-box dynamism that United have lacked in the middle of the park for years.

Guimaraes, Mac Allister at Dipperville, Fernandes of West Ham (welcome to bring Diouf with him), Baleba, Gomes...options are out there...Josh Cullen of Burnley has had a really impressive season too.

The original post asked for 2 and I've babbled on mentioning 10...but any two from James Garner, Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali & Elliot Anderson would be my first choices, however improbable it may seem.

We could sign prime Scholes and Keane.

And they will make us marginally better.
But as long as we continue to sacrifice one of our midfield roles to play Bruno in the #10 role, we will still get overrun and outfought in the middle of the park.

We need 3 actual midfielders, playing at the same time. This 4-2-3-1 nonsense is just exposing our midfield.

That said, of course Anderson and Bruno G would improve us. But those two can't solve our midfield woes. That Bruno #10 (rather a glorified false 9) role will keep killing us, leaving us exposed. We need to start playing 3 midfielders.

Huh?!

Bruno Fernandes in the 10 has not been the key problem behind United's midfield being exposed.

Bruno's defensive work is very good for a player in his position - per match he makes basically the same amount of possession-adjusted tackles+interceptions (2.5) and ball recoveries (4.96), as e.g. Sandro Tonali (2.65) and (5.15)...

Despite being a 10, Bruno has the defensive output of your average PL central midfielder.

I'd be more concerned by eg adding Tonali behind him, when he is meant to be a more ball-winning CM in a more defensive role, yet just has the defensive output of your average PL central midfielder...

Garner and Anderson.

If not Anderson then M Fernandes. If not M Fernandes then Alex Scott or Wharton.

Mateus Fernandes cost West Ham 40m.. how much you think they will want for him? I think we're too late to sign him.

Can’t imagine the price exceeding that of Tonali or Wharton, especially if they go down. Hoping we start seeing links to him.

They are in a tough situation financially. If they go down, I think he will be available for a fair price. If not, they will still need to make a profit from player sales.

I would go straight to top 6 Ligue 1 (except PSG) Lens, Marseille, Lille, Lyon or Rennes and raid their best players aged 22-26 for 25-50 % of the price compared to EPL versions.

I don't follow Ligue 1 so would be happy if someone here could help profile some of the guys from the teams mentioned. For example by age, position and stats this guys profile seems very EPL compatible but I've never seen him play:

Lens
Mamadou Sangare, 23, CM

All 4 names being circulated in the media, are rated at 70m, if not more. So pick 1.

30-40m player is unlikely coming from EPL unless very young or very old. Might have to throw a dice on European league hopefully better luck than Ugarte.

Insightful.

I agree there will be a fair few out the door.

Specifically with him, I suppose it depends on whether any other clubs are interested.

I'd keep onto Ugarte unless he's desperate to go. I still think he has his uses if played in the correct way. Let him press high up and give him the licence to go and win the ball, whilst knowing he has that insurance policy behind him.

How I would personally like us to set up next year in a 4231 is to have a deep-lying playmaker and a box to box engine.

Deep-Lying Playmaker

1. Angelo Stiller
2. Elliot Anderson
3. Bruno G

Box to box

1. Elliot Anderson
2. Ederson
3. Bruno G

First Choice

Anderson - Stiller

Second Choice

Ederson - Stiller

I'm a massive fan of Bruno G - I think he's the best midfielder in the league. I just don't know if we'll target him due to age and the fact that he doesn't seem like someone who'd want to leave Newcastle.

If, going into next season, we have:

Stiller
Anderson
Mainoo
Ugarte
Youth Player

Then I think that would be a good solid foundation to build from. If Ugarte goes, then potentially get Joao Gomes on the cheap.

Just curious, what is it that makes you prefer Tonali over Garner?
Nothing. I just don't believe we can sign a player who just signed a new long contract reasonably. That price makes a player as prohibitively expensive as Enzo cost Chelsea when they insisted on getting him from Benfica. If money was no object I pick Garner over everyone on our list else to replace Casemiro. Alongside Anderson if I'm getting just two

Ok. I see that point.

But I would be very surprised if Everton did not sell Garner for a fee approx the same as Newcastle would demand for Tonali.

Changed my mind already. Think we'll sign Tonali and Wharton, in addition to Gomes if Ugarte goes.

Tonali - 75M
Wharton - 60M
Gomes - 30M

Anderson is first choice. I think he’s the best Avilable we could plug into the lineup next to Mainoo and keep things ticking. Not going to bring the goal threat that has Cas has, but honestly what other defensive midfielder would that we could actually get. I like Tonali. I like that he could play as a 6 or an 8 which for versatility. We probably do need 3 midfield signings over the summer unless one of the youth players makes a big jump

Yeah he would definitely be my first choice

Anderson has to be the main target and I think he is. Tonali is most likely our backup plan. City will be favourites for Anderson but we should be in for him either way and give him a decision to make. I'd love to sign someone like Bouaddi, one of the best young midfielders in the world. I hope we keep adding those young punts whatever happens

Need to make waves and go for both of them as that would be making a serious statement of intent
